Here in the USA I was watching this race live on some Telstra stream that was 100% on-boards. When the crew asked Marcos if he was wearing his balaclava, he put his gloved hand to his face to "check" for his balaclava before responding he thought so.

I believe he changed helmet brands from Bell to a Stand 21 for that year. He def wore a balaclava under his previous lid - perhaps the newer helmet was a more snug fit? Regardless, it was a rule for the event and he was fortunate not to be black-flagged post the balaclava stop. Not that it makes a difference hanging off a fence at turn three!

Yeah. There are literally thousands of technical and sporting regs that you're supposed to adhere to and the stewards don't always spot every infringement. But the surest way not to get penalised is to abide by the rule. The officials are always going to intervene if it's noticed that you're not wearing a balaclava. They can't be seen not to. It's a safety critical item, but at the same time there's a performance advantage in terms of driver comfort to be had if you don't wear it, so the stewards know they have to enforce the rule to stop people risking it. Ultimately if you're running 14th you may slip under the radar, but doing it in a really obvious way when you're leading and the cameras are on you isn't very smart.

@@bus5683 No, his co-driver wasn't either. At the time, nobody was on the stewards' case telling them that this or that Holden driver didn't have a balaclava on. If they were, the stewards would have had to penalise them, because they can't be seen not to. It doesn't matter if we find out later that various people didn't wear one and got away with it. A bunch of minor infractions go undetected at every race, but you still have to take it on the chin if you get found out.

Nevermind that in the 2003 and 2004 race when they do a driver change you can clearly see him wearing a balaclava. Glad he never won Bathurst. In his words, he is "an absolute joke".

As far as I'm aware not wearing a balaclava doesn't make you faster so BULLSHIT give them a fine. I was becoming a fan of supercars but I keep seeing this bullshit "oh you're married but you don't have your wedding ring on....20 lap penalty". Or " your car livery doesn't have any green in it, put in and run around your car 20 times". If it doesn't effect lap times it shouldn't effect the race. If a driver wants to race bollock naked give him a £1million fine, don't ask him to put and manually change all 4 wheels with a wrench.

Deciding halfway through the race to do the stop go rather than immediately after the start, practice, qualifying or even mentioning it in the drivers meeting. Look at Aussie motor sport how many different classes and championships are there? No constancy. Look at this years Bathurst Penske and their pre planned cheating the entire team should have been disqualified from the race no ifs or buts yet they sent in an engineer to take the fall. Penske from its very inception has cheated in motorsport. CAMS just let them off.

dazaspc there was nothing stopping SBR from protesting against other teams and drivers, also as most drivers get changed in their own private space CAMS would not obviously and immediately know all drivers are wearing them at all times. In any case it was blatantly obvious Ambrose was not wearing one and as he was leading there was no way another team would not protest to stewards about it. There’s no consistency overseas for the most part either! Sure CAMS are notoriously bad but in this instance I do not think CAMS did anything overly outrageously bad here as it is not an easy thing to police unless there’s a steward in very drivers change room. This years Bathurst was poorly handled I agree, a DSQ would be too harsh but post race 25 second penalties applied to both DJR Penske cars and the massive fine would have sufficed, but politics and Supercars golden boy and golden sponsor prevented rational decision making as CAMS were afraid of the backlash of stripping them of the win would have done.

It would make far more sense to issue a hefty fine for infringing the regulations in a manner that doesn’t affect the race position or give the driver and his team an unfair advantage. I appreciate that - for health and safety reasons - they could have insisted that the driver come in to don his balaclava, but they didn’t actually KNOW that he wasn’t wearing it until they called him in... which they were already doing in order to impose a ludicrous time penalty for a speculative infringement that doesn’t warrant it... 🤷🏻‍♂️

This was the end of the enjoyment in V8 supercar racing for me, why did officials wait the entire race to find Marcose without a Balaklava on and ignore others without them? It was clearly evident the whole race, why wait till the last few laps? It could have remained such an awesome sport, but to wait until nearly the end of the race and pull in select drivers for a balaklava of all things after a "gentlemens ruling" was made on the fly applying to all?, it was nothing but corrupt money making ratings making staged race! The real winner was unfairly called out (Ambrose).

Ambrose obviously had some talent as a driver but look back through his V8 SC Australian racing history and it is also obvious he is a petulant sore loser, fined by the stewards, the balaclava and lying about it, brake testing Kelly are just a few - almost choked on his words when he was forced to issue a public apology - wishes he had punched Greg Murphy - I don't think so, just look at the video of their altercation on the track, when fronted by Murphy, he kept backing up until he had his back to the wall, always blamed others for his 'incidents' - in his own words 'I'm trying to win races and the're just getting in my way' - all these are signs of an entitled bully.
