Nicely done. This is definitely an easier and more affordable undertaking for those of us who live in free states. Nicely done. I definitely appreciate the adherence to keeping things as “factory” as possible. The exhaust wasn’t a concern for me because we don’t have to pass emissions tests. My only concerns were the tone and NOT throwing an emissions related code. I definitely didn’t want the factory sound but I didn’t want it to be obnoxious either. Dual borlas and custom 3.25” stainless plumbing makes for a beautiful growl. Thanks for the 1st rate Yota content. It’s very helpful!

Thanks for the kind words. Mikey would be very happy to read your comment. Amazingly enough though, not too long after doing this involved swap, Mikey and his wife decided they wanted to purchase an Airstream trailer. Since the 4runner, even with the V8, would have been majorly exceeding the towing limits, he gave this beautiful 4runner to his brother and bought a Yukon Denali to pull his trailer. He didn't have the room at his house for the 4runner so he gave it away. I'd say Mikey is a very nice brother. So unfortunately, we won't be seeing his V8 Swapped 4runner again. Hey Thomas, I think a shop would charge bookoo bucks to do this swap for you. It's a ton of work. Mikey did a lot of the research for the wiring harness and built it himself which alone was a ton of time. He estimated he spent 12k on this swap. I think a shop doing 100% of the work would charge you even more. But, I guess it wouldn't hurt to ask what a shop what they would charge. It would have to be a shop that specializes in this sort of thing because you're average shop wouldn't take on a project like this.

I know Mikey transplanted several of the sequoia parts onto the 4runner, and that the oil pan clears the frame. Was that the particular reason why the sequoia 4x4 was selected as the donor vehicle as opposed to a 2wd sequoia or another vehicle? Thanks and love your videos!
@TimmyTheToolman Жыл бұрын
I don't know why Mikey selected the Sequoia other than the fact that he was able to buy the whole vehicle relatively cheap through the Copart Auto Auction. The Sequoia was wrecked bad in a crash, but the drivetrain was in good shape.

Would u recommend this for a reliable work truck? I do long trip cycles in my 3.4 for work sometimes I drive 7hours-10 and have had a couple of issues due to my truck having 168k miles. A shop told me I should just buy a new truck but I think it’s a waste of money if I’m gonna beat her up and lose 50% of value within a year of working every time I’d trade it In... I used to hate on this truck until I drove it now I don’t want to let it go 😩 should I import a helix or stagea or would this be a good swap for what I need Timmy ?
@TimmyTheToolman3 жыл бұрын
What kind of issues have you had with it? I wouldn't do the 2UZ swap unless I could do it all myself and didn't need to pay for help doing it. It's a ton of work and it's also fairly expensive depending on how much you spend on everything to make it happen. The 3.4 Liter V6 is a great engine. They are known to go into the 400k miles and beyond. If you have some type of major failure, you have options to get it back on the road. You could put in a used engine or you could drop in a rebuilt and we have a 4 part video series to help you do it. As long as you take care of that motor, you might have hundreds of thousands of trouble-free miles left in it. My 2000 4runner has over 200k on it and I wouldn't have any problem driving it cross-country. Just do the regular maintenance and drive the shit out of it.

@@TimmyTheToolman first, thank you for the response! well a couple of things have happened since I got her, I’m the second owner got the truck around 125k and have put already 35k miles within 4-5months of using it for work, I’m a cat for insurance companies so I tend to do long cycles from the 5 months I’ve had the truck it has left me stranded about 4 times, the first time I completely forgot but I should be able to find the receipt for it, the second time it left me stranded I thought the battery went but when I switched it out after towing it home it did not start so I had to tow it to my hometown mechanic, ended up having a bad alternator a blown fuse and the regular waisted wheel bearings, the 3rd time It left me stranded I was driving on the eway and again it was due to another bad alternator but I was 3 hours away from my house and decided to tow the truck to the nearest well rated shop they did a excellent job and told me that my hometown shop gave me a bad alternator and recommended me to ask for a partial refund from my other shop and the 4th time was due to a bad power leak in my truck from one of the after market systems the past owner installed which led to my dash and accessories fuse being burnt, when I took it to my hometown shop they looked at it for 2 days and said they did not find a leak and recommended me to ask past owner what shop installed the after market system so that they can ask the shop where the harness is at and what they used or else it would cost me a lot if they cant pinpoint the exact location ... now every other month I have to put in a new fuse because of that leak this is mainly by I don’t trust the vehicle anymore and just want to rip the whole engine and try to build a mostly reliable/not too slow work truck.

I have a very serious interest in doing this. I have a 94 ex-cab 4x4 with the 3.slo and while most people do the 5VZ swap which is much easier, I think I want more power for towing. I've already purchased a 2-inch body lift from 4Crawler which I'm about to do and will then be installing a long travel kit and am swapping the rear axle to a 2002 Tundra to match the extended width of the front LT kit. I'm moving to Washington state in ~ 2 or 3 years and the goal is to pull my trailer back and a forth at least twice to move my small shop. I also weld MIG/TIG and fabricate and do various CAD/CNC work so I know I could tackle this and do most everything myself labor wise. I did the R150F clutch last year in my driveway. I've worked on cars since I was 15. I feel if I'm going to go through the trouble of a swap, I might as well go the extra distance to really have what I want, and being able to tow around 4,000-5,000lbs much more easily is really what I'm after. I've toyed with just buying a Tundra but I hate automatics and also hate the bulbous looks of the early 2000 models. I'd rather stick with a lighter, more compact 5-speed manual truck with a beefy engine upgrade.
@TimmyTheToolman5 жыл бұрын
Hey Jeff, sounds like you have the skill set and motivation to pull off the swap. Good luck if you decide to do it. One day I'd like to learn to weld but I sort of doubt I'll ever be an accomplished fabricator. Happy Wrenching!
@oldowl42905 жыл бұрын
@@TimmyTheToolman Thanks, it looks like the 4.0UZ is a lot easier to pull off with a manual transmission and transfer case. Since the 2UZ was all automatics only it seems near impossible to mate the two. There are a few leads on an adapter plate but from what I can tell it also comes down to emissions issues since again, no manuals exist for that engine and thus no ECU for manual. Therefore I may have to scrap the idea or go with the 4.0L UZ or an OM617Mercedess diesel swap which a guy has well documented on here on KZbin.

Hey Chris, as you saw in the video, this job is pretty involved. Just the wiring harness portion is a ton of work. Also, you need to be able to fabricate or know someone who does that knows what they're doing. I can't 100% speak for Mikey but hey does very well financially and wouldn't be motivated by money he could make helping you out. He's a super cool and generous dude but he has a family, a busy job and other irons in the fire so I'm 99% sure he wouldn't be interested. He doesn't even own that 4runner any more. He gave it to his brother because he needed a more powerful rig to pull a trailer so he bought a Yukon Denali.

@@TimmyTheToolman I have been told by a reputable person at Toyota that the 2002 4Runner and the 2002 Tacoma were basically identical from the "A" pillar forward. Didn't the 4Runner have the iForce 4.7 as an option? If so...wouldn't a bunch of stuff that you needed to fabricate be available from Toyota? I did some measurements on my Tacoma and there is nearly 12" of clearance from the front of the block to the radiator. Is the 4.7 iForce that much longer?
@TimmyTheToolman4 жыл бұрын
@@malhaven1 Yes, 1st Gen Tacomas and 3rd Gen 4runners are pretty much identical with their front ends and drive train. But, 3rd Gen 4runners did not come with a V8. The 4th Gen 4runner had this option. Nothing that Wes and Mikey did was a plug and play thing they could have purchased from Toyota. If you look at the video footage, the 4.7 liter engine fills the 3rd Gen engine compartment with very little room to spare. There's no ability to have an engine driven fan. A custom electric fan set-up needed to be added.

I do know last year the dealership (broke down in New Mexico) put standard plugs in..which may have killed the motor. Feel free to email at chuckforquer at gmail dot com.

Yup, cruise works great! The ‘02 4Runner uses the same wiring setup as the Sequoia so it’s just a matter of connecting the corresponding wires in the E5 plug. Earlier 3rd gen 4Runners used a different cruise control switch so it will be more difficult.

Hey do you think I could swap in the 4.7 into a regular cab tundra that has a 3.4 v6 in it? Would I need to do any custom work or need custom parts or just donor parts?
@TimmyTheToolman5 жыл бұрын
You could do it. You would absolutely need to do custom work like we discuss in the video. Custom motor mounts. You'd have to reposition the transmission support cross member. Custom Electric Cooling Fan Shroud. Alter the exhaust. Custom AC lines. It's a lot of work and a lot of money especially if you're paying somebody to do the swap for you.
