Art competition finalists will be aired later this week as well, depending on the Elden Ring news we do/don't receive in a couple of days at The Game Awards! Man, we received some INCREDIBLE entries. Gonna be paying 10 artists $2k so I hope you don't mind that Audible shoutout to help with that hole in my wallet. It's a good deal too!

Yahya ya but isn’t elden Ring like 2021 release date? I mean..that’s a long ways away still lol...this video really shows the bottom of the barrel was scraped to out this video together. Souls is done, sekiro has so little content and things to do there isn’t a lore to tell us. Wouldn’t be surprised if channels like this have massive sub losses over the next while. To touch upon the music thing, Gwyn's theme is in the key of A minor, which only uses the white piano keys. Writing in the key of A minor isn't any different from writing in any other minor key in terms of theory, and furthermore writing a song that only uses the notes in the key isn't necessarily hard. What is impressive, though, is how the composer managed to make the piece so emotional and powerful despite only using the notes within the key. Generally, songs (especially pop songs) tend to be written to only use notes that are in the key of the song in order to be easier to listen to, which can risk the song sounding bland and generic. Likewise, songs that are written to be more evocative will sometimes try to accomplish this by using the notes that are outside of the key (these notes are called "accidentals") in order to add color and surprise the listener or even make them uncomfortable because these notes don't "belong" in the key. So this composition is impressive, in part, because of how much it accomplishes with how little it uses (the same goes for the melody, which is developed entirely from only two really simple motifs; the youtube channel 8-Bit Music Theory has a whole video going into the composition of this piece, I'd highly recommend checking it out). Hope that was understandable.

Based on what I can remember from a music theory course I took four years ago, Gwyn's theme is played in A minor, the relative minor of C major (meaning they use the same base notes). Because it only uses the notes from the A natural minor scale, when played on the piano it uses only the white keys. I like to believe that this is completely intentional and a stroke of genius on Motoi Sakuraba's part. I love how it feels like even Gwyn's theme music itself attempts to resist the Dark, as though the Kiln of the First Flame is the one place where Gwyn's fading light remains untouched.
@wesleyscott1633

Let me break this down for you brian phillip: Vaati was paid to put it in his video, if the info was meaningful, it would have been included without the ad, which muddies whether the point is valid or how much it is shoved in. This is an ad being forced down your throat, and you just said that you liked it. I will down vote any video that has a sponsorship in it. Yes they absolutely can include it, they obviously own their space, but I own my opinion, and if companies cannot use the ad space provided by youtube, I will attempt to dissuade people from circumventing that system to try and shove it down my throat. Heysel is a reference to DeS (Old Monk), Kirk is from DS1, Creighton is from DS2, Leonhard is a reference to BB (hunter fashion with a moonlight weapon), and our character is from DS3. So each Finger represents a different game in the Soulsborne series. As for hints towards future games, Chester and Manus are similar to Hunters (both in fashion and combat style, using a crossbow instead of a gun and bleeding throwing knives [he also uses Senpou Kicks lol]) and the Cleric Beast, while Oolacile shows a city where the townsfolk are corrupted and turned into mindless beasts (also represented by Artorias). BB's Old Hunters DLC and the League Covenant shows some hints at Sekiro, though more with similar themes rather than direct references. Centipedes being found within corrupted men, and a town of people who worship a creature of the ocean (Kos in BB, the Great Carp in Sekiro) which transforms the townsfolk into sea-like creatures themselves. The phantasms and precious bait look the same as well. DS3 also predicted Sekiro with katana parries (I'm joking but that actually is a bit valid). If we take Artorias of the Abyss to be hinting at Bloodborne, and The Old Hunters to be hinting at Sekiro, then it would make sense to expect a Sekiro DLC to hint at Elden Ring, but unfortunately it doesn't look like we're getting that. I do think, however, that Sekiro will greatly effect the gameplay of ER. It's supposed to be the most open-world of all their Soulslike games, including horseback riding. Sekiro is the only game with a boss riding on horseback (as far as I'm aware, maybe DS2 had one but I haven't seen anyone mention it), which could be them working out combat on horseback. There are more ways to move around and explore in Sekiro as well, with actual jumping, swimming, and a grappling hook. We may or may not get grappling hook but swimming and jumping I think are likely to be in ER. They're also clearly evolving weapon/combat arts, from DS1 and BB having certain weapons with special heavy attacks, DS3 having dedicated weapon arts for weapons, and Sekiro having combat arts that you could equip, as well as building on trick weapons with Sekiro's prosthetics. Since we already know the game will involve a lot of arms being cut off, and the red-headed k***ht in the trailer had a prosthetic arm, it's possible we'll see a return of prosthetics. I'm hoping the weapons will be more similar to BB's trick weapons than Sekiro's prosthetics, but either way I'm excited to see how the combat will evolve.

*I know not many people will appreciate this but here goes an interesting tidbit about Bloodborne (spoilers btw):* In the Bloodborne's book, the *Old Hunters' Collection Guide*, there is a picture of what is considered the "Holy Grail" of Tomb Prospecting: *the 3rd level Guidance rune* For those who don't know, this is the rune associated with Ludwig, the Holy Blade, and it is mentioned that, in a way, it is what drove him to madness. This rune also enhances the strategy of fighting with reckless abandon, as it boosts "Rally" values (the mechanic in Bloodborne which allows you to recover hp shortly after losing, by attacking enemies). Both Rally, and the Guidance rune are also associated with the Holy Moonlight Sword, because it was from it, that he uncovered the rune. The 3rd level of this rune was never found out, and since all possible Chalice Dungeons have been officially exhausted, this means only one thing... Fucking Miyazaki granted the entire Bloodborne community the most amazingly convoluted way of experiencing an irony of the likes have never been seen. This is miles beyond the "Pendant" debacle of DS1! By releasing an image inside a book that only the utmost enthusiasts of Bloodborne would ever acquire, especially Tomb Prospectors, he gave us a false hope that would never be realized. That fucking picture, in that fucking book is cursed beyond dimensions. It is a dream. It is a vision. It will never exist. It is meant to inspire the same thing that consumed Ludwig, and drove it into the beast we found him as. Miyazaki produced the single most elaborate rick-roll I've ever witnessed.

About Gwyn’s theme: If a song is written in the key signature of C major or A minor, it automatically does not use any black keys, so it most likely did not require any sort of restrain from the composer, but it may have been a conscious desicion.

About the white piano keys: Most of the music we have today is composed in just one key (key refering to the scale used). By just one key I mean that the song does not change from one key to another (which is common in older music like jazz and classical music). That means that every song that sticks to just one key is playable with only white keys(piano buttons) at the piano since the key(scale) of C includes all of the whites but no blacks.

From a musical point of view, Gwyn's theme has only white keys because it is on a minor but in Dorian mode (from the greeks modes of music). That means it doesnt have a sharp 7th tone like any natural mode tonality would have; and that's why the theme only has the white keys from the piano. Dorian mode is used a lot for soundtracks both in videogames and films, actually. But I cannot say if that also has something to do with the lore of the game, it would be guessing without real proof; but the idea you proposed is a really cool one ;) Love your videos Vaati!

I already got audible, and i must say i'm very pleased with it. And the HP Lovecraft Collection is a fantastic audio book. My Adventure in HP Lovecraft's work began with "The Shadow over Innsmouth", which i learnd about through Vaatis Old Hunters Videos. Thanks so much for setting me on this wonderful, terrible journey through the works of Lovecraft.

Hey Vaati, Thnx for another amazing video. I really did not know Gael could be riposted. I used an Irithryll Rapier against him the first time. What did you use Vaati?
