@Uncle Ho This and the fact that it's a lot easier to sing the "o" vowel in a higher register than the "i" vowel sound. You see opera singers "morphing" vowels like this all the time but it's obviously more subtle and professionally done than a garage punk band.

They're from California and Tom only started doing this ridiculous accent thing in some songs of the self titled 2004 album. It then became his signature vocal thing he took with him in his angels and airwaves project and other things he did, including the blink "comeback". To me it was barrable in the self titled album, but anything after that was just too annoying for me and I stopped listening to his new stuff.
