You're not a hoarder, you're a pack-rat. You hang on to potentially useful things even if they may not be useful to you at the time. My dad does that, he works on Volkswagen bugs and let me tell you it has saved him money on more than one occasion. Even things that weren't bug parts.

Hoarding is when you hang on to useless shit. Pack-ratting is when you hang on to useful shit. One is confused for the other until you happen to have the one part someone needs in a critical situation.

I think a big part of it is keeping an amount of random stuff that's proportional to the amount of storage space you have. My friend's dad stacks dumb shit to the ceiling in his house (the basement is already full), leaving small walkways to navigate around.
