I'm going through this right now. I'm struggling between staying at a toxic job or getting 2 hours a sleep to dedicate enough time to build a portfolio. And thats after 3 years of experience.

I appreciate that the suggested solutions are not just to work on side projects. It's helpful to see alternatives that can also work well. I would see it as a red flag if a hiring manager expected to see passion projects in a portfolio. To me, it's an indication that work/home life balance is not highly valued or supported. Even motivated and passionate designers have obligations and interests outside of UX. All of one's spare time can't always be spent creating evidence of their skills and experience. And self-care in the form of doing whatever activity helps you reset and re-energize after a long day is crucial for preventing burnout.

This is nail on the head, i have exactly same problem with my biggest projects being under NDA, rest of my works looking bland and not "sexy" enough. Thank you!

This issue is not just for UX work or one's portfolio, as NDA's can be just a rough in other industries even writing of resume/CV. The examples from your 'tech world' really inspired some ideas that helps in my world -thanks!

Thank you for this video, it really helped me finally continue with my portfolio, I am not a UX/UI designer, but your video applies to my career as well, it’s common sense, we have to respect NDAs contracts and we should only tell a story about it. Thank you!

Thank you for providing these examples! It was super insightful to see different ways on how to talk about an NDA in a case study and without one. It's always a tricky topic of what to show and not to show without breaching the NDA clause.

Hey Vy 👋 Thanks for the shoutout ☺️ I feel all your words when you said we have to invest extra time on passion projects 😭 One trend I have seen recently is that designers are having a password protected case studies. So a portfolio website will have all the information about the designer, but when you click on the project name, it will ask for a password. Maybe those passwords would have been shared seperately with the hiring team. Although I don't know if it is again ethical, because the data is still hosted somewhere.

Hey 👋 yes designers aren't that diligent. The password alone won't reduce the risk, or legal infringement, or prevent leaks. Its one of those self managed risks. even when candidates choose to hide the work but then share their screen in the technical interviews if remote, people can record or take screenshots. The risk is always there.

We definitely need a proper solution, not workarounds, for this! Care to collaborate on it @Mrinal?

Happens a lot - perhaps a creative reimaging of the work removing all sensitive NDA protected info. Fundamental aspect of art throughout history to be influenced by other works.

Thanks for the advice. I belive in the power of passion projects too :) (As a design lead, I look out for such details when hiring)

Gotta wonder … How much proprietary information has been shared with PMI by individuals who have signed NDA’s with their employers? What does PMI do with this information? Do they sell it? How much of a national security issue is this?

ice video, this gave me some great ideas on how to work around the limit of NDA while still showing I did work for those major brands

I'm a little confused. I work for the government as a contractor and I am under NDA. However, all the work my team is doing is public-facing. Anyone can access the site I am working on. Does this mean I can create a case study about the process of this project given that it's public-facing? Any help appreciated.

as He mentioned, just mention the project outline, the outcomes, the process (he showed a portfolio like this in the video)

Would you still consider the NDA important if the website and the design work is already public?
