as a Home Care Physical Therapist here in the US, i do understand what you are saying......... staying in ALF/Nursing homes here is depressing......and it is getting expensive as per what my patients are telling me....sad to say, this is the reality here in the US......once you get old, family members, although not all, will be thinking to put you on those facilities...or if you are alone, those facilities, will offer their services in return of the title of your property.....very sad reality.....but some of my patients, very few of them, still has their family members like adult sons/daughters who come and visit them regularly.....goodluck on your plan in retiring to my home country, make sure that you will not be fooled by people who will pretend that will take good care of you

I have to totally disagree with this guy, great video but i just think it's exausting to constantly travel, and life is short and goes by faster if you're constantly traveling. I've been living abroad since 2009 and I really prefer to minimize my traveling, once you've done a lot of traveling it stops seeming so glamorous, the best thing to do is find one place where you actually enjoy living.

Love it. Contrary oppinions. But read his user name. Amazon seller. Guess what, I was an Amazon seller and quit because (at the time) was too hard to do physical products when you move around the world. And it is boring to stay in one place forever when there is a big world out there. The good news is you are in charge of your life. So park you butt if you are more like him or go on an adventure if you are more like me. Thanks again, Dan

@@VagabondAwake It's not that I like to park my but, it's that I preffer to expore one country, and the Philipines has over 7,000 islands, it's more than enough for me. Plus I curretnly live in Russia, the biggest country on earth, there are plenty of place i can visit without leaving the coutnry. But I personally find a lot of flights and passport control and long trips really exausting and you miss out a on a lot buy not staying in one place long enough to know your way around and form a lot of personal relationships.

Some people do not like the hassle of leaving the country after 90 days, 180 days. Hence they look for digital nomad visa and mm2h. Currently mm2h is being reviewed but many also applied for sarawak mm2h as it is affordable for expats.

Thanks for this video; it makes good sense. I left the US in 1997 for Cork, city Ireland. It replaced Boston. Once divorced, I've lived in Haarlem, Netherlands 3 years, and also 2 years each in Portugal and Spain (Sabaris, Baiona). I left Ireland in Oct 2022; it's very expensive, and I've bounced between, mostly Malaysia and Thailand; (I love both), and also Vietnam, and Cambodia. Im in KL now. I was a Marine grunt in Nam in 68-69. Two short tours. But, have felt rootless since, and don't think I'll settle permanently. But, spending 5-6 months in a country is a good way. Thanks again

One thing that is not mentioned.. the dreaded Stamp in the passport. Take for instance Cambodia.. they put a large stamp that takes 1 whole visa page in the passport. Thailand takes half a page, while Philippines is just a small stamp. I have a US passport, 31 pages still free after 2 years use. If I where to go through 3 to 5 countries, how many pages and how fast would i use them up? passport re-newel can be a pain in the but and now take up to 6 months in the USA.. I will ride it out here in Thailand until this place changes too drastically to stay. I would like to make a circle from Malaysia, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, but not at the expense of eating a passport every 3 to 5 years. Plus the cost of short term rental contracts are higher then long term. for me, having a base country, then taking 1 or 2 trips a year to see other places is more convenient.

Another fantastic video. As someone who has been in 80+ countries, I struggle whenever people ask me what my favorite country is. I too, usually use a food analogy, saying that when I go out to eat, sometimes I feel like having pizza, other times steak, and once in a while I crave a salad. In the same way my preferred country/countries can change from day to day depending on what I'm missing. But if I had to pick just one country to stay in for the rest of my life, it would be the US, simply due to the variety of both geography and people. Only issue is that it's difficult to afford living there! In regard to Baskin-Robbins, since you like salted caramel, drop by Pola Gelato next time you're in Merida, and give their blue cheese apple compote flavor a try. Sounds weird, but I had it last week and it was amazing! Perfect level of saltiness from the blue cheese, punctuated by the sweetness of the apple chunks. Loved the harem analogy. Definitely got my own favorites, but have never specifically thought of them that way! Initial thought for countries I've revisited repeatedly: Latin America = Mexico (where I am right now), Colombia, Argentina, and Brazil. Asia = Indonesia (specifically Bali) and Thailand. Europe = Italy, France, Germany, and Austria.

Horses for courses I guess - particularly at my age (66), I much prefer the security of having a long-term visa (I'm currently on my 2nd Colombian 3-year pensionado) and being settled in within a particular place to dealing with the imperative of having to relocate to a whole new country every six months and adjust to the climate, language and culture of that place. Granted, after the honeymoon period is over, the place you've settled in may not hold the same fascination for you as when you first arrived, but there are a host of other palatable options for moving to right here within Colombia where I can continue to leverage my long-term visa status. Ideally, I'd like to maintain where I am as a base of operations and make shorter 2-3 week trips to see other countries as finances permit.

Great topic, its got me thinking. I've been to Philippines before, nice place but not perfect. Infrastructure issues, inefficiencies, and health care system have me on the fence about retiring there. Malaysia looks better, the Sarawak MM2H is the least costly and restrictive (required income is $18k per year and only a minimum 30 day stay, not sure about bank deposit requirements if over 50). It makes for an attractive home base in SE Asia and you can slow travel for a good portion of each year.

The first time (in 1995), my experience with this was so bad that after three days I turned around and went back to Spain. I wanted to give it another try, so I went back in 2015-ish for a couple off weeks. It seemed slightly better, but not much. Since I was older, it's possible that I was better-equipped to shrug it off. Now that I've hit the highlights that I wanted to see, it's very unlikely that I'll ever go back.

Ok, so I am sold on slow-travel now after having watched this. You do an excellent job of explaining it. To lay out the reasons you state: 1. Never worry about being taxed (because you stay less than 180 days) 2. You can move about to enjoy the best weather in each of the different countries (any one country will have an off-season). 3. You get the joy of world travel, without the cost (because you are not traveling as a tourist, but as a local). 4. Late in life, we get tired of the same ole same ole easier than when we were young. When you are young, you are focused on your career, your relationship, discovering what it is like to be an adult. When you are 60, you are ready to let the good times roll. But the good times wear out after a while and why not just move on to a new adventure! I have to admit it is a little scary to pull up roots and just hit the road full time, but I am getting close! Thank you for the best retirement videos out there: Your videos are always chock full of actionable advice, not just an anecdote of someone's vacation. Keep up the good work. True. As long as the account balance is never over $10k during the year, you do not have to report that you HAVE the account. Something that people rarely mention, though, is that if you earn INTEREST on that account, you still have to report the INTEREST income you received and pay tax on that. (e.g., if you have an $8k account that earned $80 of interest, you are not required to report the account on an FBAR, but you are still required to pay tax on that $80 of interest.)

I normally make - comments though you tend to be very diplomatic I traveled from 1974 to 1992 lost count - what I noticed after 25 , 30 years many changes happen, A beach house I stayed the back door opened to the sand, today is lined 20 to 30 story building on the beach side their is no way to be diplomatic about it! SUNY ISL BEACH 1992 WAS lined with 2 story hotels today its Golden beach lined 40 story building with the cheapest apt $3,000,000.00 dollars for the price of one apt today you could buy the comple building in 1992

Never really been my thing but many people like to partner swap instead of country swap. I only sample multiple potential partners during the dating phase, not the relationship phase. If a woman is not enough to remain exclusive with it is time to let her go to find someone who appreciates her enough to stay honest.

Thanks for this valuable information Dan. I was looking for a place to retire. But the idea of settling in one place now seems boring. I think you have convinced me to become a slow traveler. Iโ€™ll take a few months out of every year and exploreโ€ฆ. And I couldnโ€™t believe the comment about bringing sand to the beach. Are you F ing kidding me? Anyone watching your videos and seeing your girl and canโ€™t recognize that she is the diamond in the sand at the beach is an idiot. Lol. I always thought she was your motivation for traveling all over the place. She would definitely be mine. Not traveling with her would be like having a Lamborghini in the garage and never taking it out for a spin. As a matter of fact, it would be a crime to go to any beach in the world without a girl like that! Keep doing your thing, man!

Visit other countries before the Philippines so you can compare. When in the Philippines, stay in BCG or Makati if you prefer Western living. Get health insurance or travel insurance where you don't have to experience what he experienced, If you are from the US, there are already banks that have branches there. I don't know about taxes because my family and friends have not had that problem. Visa is very easy. Regarding Baskin Robins, they do have all the cream he is talking about, he just doesn't know the places. You can also have all the International food in the Manila area. Look for cheap flights and book ahead of time, at least months.
