Great video! I've really enjoy VP mangoes, the recent ones I've tried had hints of citrus.

Love the photo of the VP tree. Beautiful tree loaded with super looking fruit. Is it possible to keep the VP tree to 15 feet or shorter? Thanks!

Last year I knew a house that was being sold and torn down and had a Valencia Pride with alot of mangos on it. I was allowed to pick all I could and they were all green. I put them on the table for a couple of weeks until they started to turn yellow and had alittle give when pushed on and WOW was it good. Found one at Lowes for 35.00 and that was a year ago and its 4 ft tall in a pot. Will be going in the ground this month. It grew close to 2 feet in a year in the pot. Was in a 3 gallon pot when bought and up potted it the day I bought it. The trick is the ripe right timing.

Does mangoes get cross pollinated? Does that changes their flavor profile when they do? You have many different varieties in a small area so I wonder if there is any type of combination of one variety to another.
@SulcataGrove6 жыл бұрын
Garry Cole Fruit will be the same, regardless of pollination, however seed genetics will be different (From what I understand)
@timtebow47756 жыл бұрын
Cross pollination only effects the next generation if you plant the seed assuming the seed is monoembryonic which most mangoes are. Polyembryonic seeds grow true. But every time you plant a monoembryonic mango seed you technically just created a new variety - usually inferior to other varieties, but every in once in awhile a seedling will become something unique or special.

Thanks Steve M for the explanation. I just wonder why mangoes taste varies so much from the fruits within the tree itself. Thank you though for the information.

Indian mangoes are better or valencia? And have you tasted nam dockmai, which one is better?
@SulcataGrove Жыл бұрын
Taste is very subjective. Indian mangos are more complex with delicious flavors. For some reason, I don’t like the flavor of Mallika mangos grown on the gulf coast, but I have enjoyed other Indian mangos very much.

I like to use Valencia Pride for mango curry. It is a good way to use the bumper crop that Valencia Pride provides and I'm not overwhelming the subtle flavors that many mangoes have with the spices in the curry. My only problem is that as soon as my neighbors see the red blush they want to take all of my mangoes during the night.

Thanks for the tip! I will try making some this year. Hope your mangos don’t get swiped this year.

I’m trying to find out what are the seasonal months that the Valencia mangoes start to bloom flowers and produce the fruit?? Everyone knows about the great taste!! So who can tell me the exact months??
@SulcataGrove2 жыл бұрын
It varies each year for us. Flowers have been January-April different years. Fruit has been June-October different years. Typical fruiting for us in Sarasota is late July-August

I have probably tssted close to 50 varieties of mangoes and the more varieties I try the more I like the older established PIN varieties. The newer Zill varieties that are all the rage have often left me underwhelmed, tho I haven't tried them all.
@SulcataGrove6 жыл бұрын
Steve M Our favorites this year were all Zill’s varieties other than PPK. Coconut Cream, Pina Colada, Orange Sherbet, Peach Cobbler, and Lemon Zest were all fantastic. Just compared VP, Peach Cobbler, and Maha Chanok today. Peach Cobbler was by far my favorite. VP was second though. Our Maha is still young, so maybe the flavor will improve with age.
@timtebow47756 жыл бұрын
The Pina Colada's I had last year had no detectable PC flavor and were pretty average. The Sweet Tarts I had this year were a MAJOR disappointment after hearing so many good things about them. I had Juliettes also from Fruitscapes and while they did have a dash of Julie flavor they were nothing special. The M4 I has was tasty and showed potential, but didn't meet expectations. Angie we both agree on it being bad. Honey Kiss was tasty, but it was still only about a 7.5. OS while it was the best of the new ones I've tried it wasn't as good as PPK which I found it very similar to. There is always the possibilty some of these were picked to soon, not a good year or not representative. But bottom line no newer Zill variety has been able to crack my top 10 and I was really hoping they would. Still many newer varieties I haven't tried yet, so something may wow me yet. Anxious to eventually try Cotton Candy, Lemon Zest, Cecilove, Super Julie, Fruit Punch, Peach Cobbler and others next year so staying hopeful. Kudos again to you & Craig for the educational and time saving resource you are providing with your videos.

WoW I would never rate a Valencia's Pride mango as "mediocre" avarage would be the lowest i rate it. To me the taste Its usually just a simple mango flavor with some orange hints in it.. but there is nothing wrong in the flavors where it would make it "mediocre" I'm sure he just said that without trying to mean any harm, but I just thought it would be fair to mention this. We enjoy seeing your videos, Because Craig usually describes things in details and we enjoy seeing your family's dinamic in the videos as well.
@SulcataGrove6 жыл бұрын
Mr.noone1 I’m not sure why Craig said that. I think it had been a year since he had eaten one and we’ve had some flavor bomb mangos this year. This Valencia Pride in the video was the best we’ve ever had. I think Craig would consider “mediocre” between a 5-7 on a 10 point scale - so average to above average. We’ve had too many 9 and 10 mangos this summer 😊
