I like these few seconds of waiting at the end, before Valentina comes out of the music, and the audience respecting that before starting to applaud. A true sharing of passion between Beethoven, the player and the listeners.

This is a gorgeous performance. That's definitely an overhead stage light that blew at 10:53, because you can see the dramatic lighting drop on Valentina and the keyboard immediately afterward. compared to before when it was much brighter. She barely flinched and it didn't effect her playing even for one note !

Not many pianists would have the courage to play a whole recital on a more than 100 year old piano! The combination of your art, this piano, that has obviously a soul and Beethoven is pure magic. I regret all the more not having been able to attend this concert due to a sore throat and painful cough that would have been criminal to inflict on you and the audience.

She's got the beautiful hands of a wide receiver, capable of grasping anything, and one of the most beautiful trills possible. This is a textbook case, I think, of the virtues of playing in steady tempi-making momentum itself an expressive feature. She lets the tunes play themselves, as in that little, importunate, meek, obsessive four-note figure that nibbles and nibbles its way through the entire last movement, ending with the quietest of swallows, the mousiest of gulps. What a pianist! She makes Beethoven so clear!

I actually thought it was too when I read the description. I was like tight, just like Tchaikovsky added cannons, Beethoven added lightning.
@ArtistForgotten10 жыл бұрын
Beethoven never added Lightning to this piece, it is bad that they used it in the 2. movement, it would fit for the 1. and 3. movement but not for the 2., where everything should be calm. Then there is the thing that it is Tempest sonata, but it is not some outer storm where is lightning and thunder, it's the inner one
@Marathonracer9 жыл бұрын
+Yami Hayashi It was an overhead stage light that blew. You can see the dramatic loss of light on Valentina and the keyboard immediately afterward compared to before the explosion. As far as the tempest supposedly being "the inner one", this is from..... Peter Takács Plays Beethoven The Mind of Beethoven ,,,,,,," In the same vein, the main theme of the “Tempest” Sonata alternates lower and higher registers in creating this image of struggle, here perhaps between the blind forces of nature and the helpless, pleading human being" ......... " one can recognize the spell that nature cast on the composer. For example, listen to the spacious sense of awe in the opening of the Adagio of the so-called “Tempest” Sonata, Op. 31, no. 2, in the noble key of B-flat major" ........... "Another common way of experiencing nature in Beethoven’s day was on horseback or during a coach-ride, both often characterized by obsessively repetitive rhythms. One can imagine one such nightmarish ride in the finale of the “Tempest” Sonata, a constant, hypnotizing texture of sixteenth notes interrupted by violent sudden ff explosions". In Wilhelm Kempff's lecture he does say that Beethoven supposedly told his secretary that if you want to know what it's about, read Shakespeare's "The Tempest" in which the Duke of Milan conjures up a storm. Sometimes a tempest is really a tempest.

One does not simply fall asleep during a Valentina Lisitsa concert.

He basically said that if Beethoven was in a concert hall and a member of the audience fell asleep he would send everyone out of the concert hall. However, judging by his biography he did not once send anyone out of the concert hall if someone spoke during his performances. I'm not the best at reading Russian (not my first language), but he said something along those lines. :)

Despite the auditorium (the venerable Salle Gaveau) loud caprices and sudden idiosincrasies - a insignificative minor event -Valentina gave a impressive memorable ,strong personal performance from this sensible Tempest Sonata from the timeless teutonic genius called Ludwig.Ars Gratias! "Ludwig van Beethoven IS the very apex from the Human Creation.He remains not surpassed by anyone . He stands reverentlly by meritus & absolute grace close near and imbricated with The Mind And Heart From God." ― Yan Ayrton, a young composer in development and evolution. >>> .ARS SEMPER.VITA PLENA.
