The springs under the floor were about half the size of the springs today, so that triple is even more amazing!

Exactly.... thinking about the Floor, but also the Horse Vault... or the Uneven Bars for the women and so on.... it was so much more difficult in the old days to show those amazing elements,....

No, no. There weren't ANY springs. No cushion either! Was just a thin piece of styrofoam with a cheap rug over it. That's it.

@@DataNinjah False. By 1980 there were springs in the floor. And by the mid 1980s, the size of those spings increased dramatically.

Elena Shoushounova did the same roll-out skill in her second pass over the years in her career. Those skills were banned in the sports, because of its dangerous landing. There were several gymnasts severely injured throughout the years. Still it is a breathtaking move, no doubt about that! 😎

I was a teenager and gymnast in that time and know exactly how hard the equipment felt.... It was really a tough time! Valeri was such an outstanding gymnast, but I also think this triple back ruined his health. No matter what competition you watched later on, he always grimaced, sticking a dismount and then he limped off the podium. It didn't matter on which apparatus..... He payed a high prize for being so immaculate.

Still I feel like Valeri was really a class of his own.... he was such a great talent and will never be forgotten, due to his triple back somersault. Such an insane skill - and even at those times with a totally different apparatus standard. I just watch the Olympics 2021 in Tokyo and every time they land a skill at the Floor Exercise the whole Floor is shaking. It is like they are using a mini-trampoline... It makes the routines of the 80's and 90's so much more difficult, flawless and immaculate. I love those years and the stars that were brought up to the elite level, such as Valeri Ljukin, but also Dima Bilozertschew, Valentin Mogilny, Vladimir Artemov or Yuri Korolev.....

@@tatilalima2874 Still I believe... this super element, the triple somersault back on Floor did actually cost his health. If you look at him throughout his career, after this European Championships, he was almost always limping from or to an apparatus. The Floor was so hard during that time. It had springs already, but not comparable to the Floor of our time. He is an outstanding gymnast.... and will always be remembered introducing this triple back as a world premiere.... 😊

Thank you so much for your comment.... I can understand where you are coming from and relate to your words. But in the end... it was probably a very difficult time for Valeri (and many other gymnast from the USSR), after the Soviet Union broke apart. We saw in the following years the descent of the post Soviet countries as Russia, Ukraine or Belarus and the dominance in Artistic Gymnastics faded... I guess he just wanted to take his chances and find a 'good' life somewhere else. That doesn't mean you should forget, where you are coming from or who made it possible, that you had the chance - reaching the top at your prime.

If you notice how lean and thin gymnast are at this time you will see that none of these gymnasts could compete today as they look. Today's gymnast has to be far more muscular and stronger than what was required back then. Also several judges gave him a 10 even though he had that big jump.
