The chance for a turtle to start its sinking animation only triggers when a barnacle is broken. You can go around and mine each barnacle until they're one hit way from breaking, then go through and mine all of them before he sinks

not sure if it's already known but while mining chitin for the first time, ive found out when the turtle starts sinking, you just have to log out and back in and it'll still be there, so you basicaly can harvest 100% chitin off of every turtle's back.

Abyssal dagger is my preferred method of deathsquito control. Full run speed with it out and it's a quick one shot kill without breaking your stride.

tip for mining even longer. if you are actually mining until the kraken is submerged and you are swiming . you can take stamina potions in water. they wont work completly but will give you enough to either survive or get back to the boat.

Chitin is pronounced like "pie tin" with a k sound for the ch. The "tin" is usually compressed to t'n. Ky-tn.

if you have the wolf armor from the mountains, decently upgraded, the plains are a lot easier, it also helps to have food that gives you a total of 170+ hp, you can easily snipe the goblins with the draugr bow and obsidian arrows from far away and safely clear camps for black metal scraps for stronger weapons, then just take all the flax you can to craft padded armor, which will make the plains easy

FYI if you mine only 2 out 3 grouped barnacles usually it won't trigger the "beast". Once you do trigger it, you have about 20 seconds before it sinks into the ocean, so, you mine 2 out of each group of 3 and once it awakes from its sleep, you mine whatever is left during those 20 seconds and run back to your boat, playing solo I mined over 50 from only one leviathan. Also, with the abyssal razor and by leveling up your knife skill, you easily singleshot a troll by sneaking him and hitting him with the secondary attack that will do a huge amount of damage since they are weak to pierce damage type. Have fun fellow vikings!

I found this tip on accident: If you logout after the first "grunt", the timer seems to reset and you can continue mining. Results may vary.

They're called leviathans, and theyre based on hafgufa, which don't really have a description of the lower half, but they're kinda like lion turtles from avatar in size and concept

You can reset the sinking animation if you save and logout when they start to shake. When you log in again it will still be there and will have reset

my first encounter with them was actually two next to each other, forming a large island. unfortunately the one close to my boat sunk first, so I had to get back and row to the second. got only 19 (19!) chitin. damn! AND i forgot to mark the location on the map, because I didn`t know they always spawn at the same location. well, I`ve learned my lesson. next time I start to harvest the one further away (or park my boat between them)

I struck very lucky with the Leviathan, my first find was three Leviathans all in a tight group. I got enough for the Harpoon, Razor and a bunch of Chitin left over.

Me and my friend got that stuff by accident, we saw a small island and we where debating on building there. Then we saw the things to harvest and we got some. We where on a raft too so when the turtle started to sink my friend ran to the raft missed his jump and with no stamina drowned. I said this thing will eat our raft I'm staying on top and preserved my stamina. I got to the raft after it sank and got home with all the loot. Took over 30 minutes round trip in our crappy raft tho

In Norse mythos that's actually a Kraken, not a turtle. Though I prefer the Turtle-based mythos because a surface-level Kraken freaks me out especially in a game where I can't swim without dying after 4 seconds.

isn`t it better to do a secundary attack with the Knife (when sneaking), since it is dealing even more damage and you jump the prey over a pretty good distance? I am dealing 400+ damage with a copper knife and a sneak jump attack, so the abyss Dagger should get even further. (around 600 i think)

Test on Trolls, they are very vulnerable to knifes, normaly in caves with a cooper dagger maxed i can hit 1/3 of its HP (53 knife skill)

I saw him answer another comment about if they respawn, but he mentioned once they sink, they are gone from the world/seed. He advised using friends to help mine it all at once, to maximize how much chitin you get from each turtle. Since it’s early development, though, you never know if it could change.

@@elliotyoung8760 If I had a PC, I would likely choose solo, as well, unless my hubby was free to join (he’s usually super busy though), so I feel ya there. If you’re lucky, your seed has a few of them instead of just 1 or 2. The strategy I would probably employ would be to line up a path from furthest away from my boat, headed toward it to make that getaway that much shorter if I need it & use an iron pickaxe ⛏, fully upgraded, to mine fastest. Happy hunting!

roll dodge their attacks, or block them, if you roll them you have barely enough time to swing at them before they fly away, they're one of the last enemies you're supposed to encounter so they oneshot you really easily early on

You can, but in Valheim, you use stamina while swimming and it is not regenerating in water. One have to be careful when swimming even in rivers.

It is a Norse Kraken, which was described as often being mistaken for islands. If you are looking at it during a heavy storm and waves drop low, you can see the eyes glowing beneath the surface, and it is a giant Crab-like monster. The squid version of the Kraken is different and not in game. The Leviathan confusion is because despite being called Kraken in-game, one of the game files calls it Leviathan
