Great troubleshooting. I learned a lot. Thanks for the followup. Enjoy your new Valiant. :)

Time to upgrade your Tx to match all your nice planes. Step 1 with Spectrum, throw in the trash.
@t.rexxer50073 жыл бұрын
Watched it again as this plane is what my club guys recommend when I transition to a giant scale IC engine from my abused foamies. Everyone in our club uses dual receivers without question on their big planes. Now I can really see why. Again, thanks for the detailed follow up Tom. I plan on copying this setup with the 40cc double too as one of our guys knows these motors inside and out. :) Hope your new Valiant is still flying!

My original TX was a Dx6i, and that puppy was faultless for me for years. Then I 'upgraded' to a DX8 with DSMX. First real flight with it was with the same Specktrum 6ch full range DSMX received that I had previously binded to the Dx6i I still had at the time (ie, it had worked fine for MANY flights on the Dx6i previously, so I do not blame that receiver). I lost a stunning little Yak54 on that first DX8 flight, it behavior in the air looked much like that shown in your video. I also had other issues with legit Specktrum branded receivers with that DX8 radio. So much so I now fly a 14Ch Futaba radio, no glitches on it, EVER, and I have the option for Fastest, Fast or the cheaper Fhss receivers, and will not look back - even if I do miss the overall simple ease of programming the specktrum radios (something Futaba could learn from in fairness)
@flyingrcdotnet7 жыл бұрын
The only other obvious radio failure I have seen myself since returning to RC flying was with a high end Futaba. By this criteria, they are all junk also.
@kiwibob727 жыл бұрын
Not too sure if I'd go so far as to call any of the main brands "junk" in all fairness. Like I said, the old Dx6i I had proved itself to be faultless for years with me. I've just found my Futaba 14SG to be equally as fault free as my old Dx6i was (100% issue free), Vs the newer DX8 that did not. Hell, my old man loves his DX9, but he understands my hesitance in continuing with Specktrum post the issues I personally had with my much less reliable DX8.

Bad luck. Happened to me on a maiden with a 60 CC Great Planes Revolver!
@CharlieBrown-pb9xn5 жыл бұрын
I hate that happened. So far I still only buy Futaba.
@flyingrcdotnet5 жыл бұрын
I quite literally flew that receiver to death. I still have all Spektrum in my planes and just about everything I fly for others and have not had a single radio episode aside from that one that killed the Valiant. I still have total confidence int he Spektrum equipment.

i have friend who lost nice turbine jet with Spektrum happen the same think i will go with futaba
@darrellcook82533 жыл бұрын
Remember Orbit radios? Or Heathkit radios that you built yourself? Hitec, Airtronics, JR, Futaba, Hobby King and a few knockoffs, I had a few radios and glitches that resulted in lost, wandering and twitchy aircraft. Back to Futaba I guess. Expensive and complicated, I want to fly not have to be an electrical engineer. Too bad I don't trust spectrums system.

Excellent video, sorry for the plane, she was a class act. How was the engine?
@flyingrcdotnet7 жыл бұрын
As I said in the video the engine was untouched. Even the prop was perfect. Slide a new airframe under it and I have most of what I need to get another Valiant in the air.

It could be a satellite connector as I see the wire loose. The other day I turn on my dx9 and then the Carden Extra 300 for first time since before Thanksgiving, no respond. Tried re-bind it for dozen time as it very unusual. Then I looked at all the stat connector until I found one that 1 of 3 wire were disconnect. So I pulled one off to down 3 stats from 4. Once re-bind then finally connect. Finds me surprised. For what cause loose wire is never strapped the receiver where stats plugs in which can cause slowly tear as un-noticted. For now on I'd use a velcro get a real good stick on platform then place the rx on tben you're done. Just watch all the stats connector before fly. That's the main things.

Nice Plane m8, And a shame, but thats our hobby. This can happen.. Good choice to throw out that reciever.. :-) Stay Frosty..
@BDRCkid7 жыл бұрын
I think spectrum recalled the rd you are using
@flyingrcdotnet7 жыл бұрын
Nope, the recall was a whole different series of receivers.
@GuyOnTwoWheels7 жыл бұрын
Did you try hooking another servo into the port where your failed Servo was? Did it duplicate with another Servo plugged into that same port? That will let you know for sure that it is the receiver, not the Servo that went bad. Also, some of those receivers got recalled, I'm not sure, but I don't think that is one of them. I have two of the receivers like yours, yet to go in planes, now I am concerned.
@flyingrcdotnet7 жыл бұрын
First thing I did was swap servos into that port, same thing happens with each.
@GuyOnTwoWheels7 жыл бұрын
Of course you did, you are a smart guy, figured you did that. I am sorry for your loss. I am worried now that these receivers are not reliable. Can you send it to Spektrum for evaluation?
@jamesberna60997 жыл бұрын
thintz12 Tom, I'm very satisfied you narrowed it down to a bad receiver. Since you fly big gas planes, I'd like to know if you ever had any other issues with spektrum receivers. I luv my dx9, but haven't worked up to big gasses yet.
@flyingrcdotnet7 жыл бұрын
This crash of the Valiant is the first radio problem I have seen with Spektrum equipment. if you look in all of the gassers in this area they are nearly all equipped with Spekterum. I now a couple guys that went Futaba but neither was because of reliability, they wanted features that were only on Futaba
@jamesberna60997 жыл бұрын
If only one servo was acting funny, (half of the elevator I think you said), how did the Valiant go so out of control?
@GadgetMart7 жыл бұрын
So the servo had not failed? Usually stalling in one position like that could cause a crash unless you are using a redundant system like Jeti central box. It was the receiver not outputting on that channel? Seems strange to me.
@flyingrcdotnet7 жыл бұрын
Nope. We say in the video and article (coming on my site tomorrow) that it was the Aux2 channel that went dead. No other servo works in that port, all servos work in all other ports. It don;t get much cleaner than that!
@GadgetMart7 жыл бұрын
Love your videos, your no nonsense and your honesty. Is this the 12 channel receiver that was recalled by Spektrum? or the older version?
@flyingrcdotnet7 жыл бұрын
no recall, 9 channel Powersafe. I just might replace it with the same thing. We are also talking about putting dual receivers in a plane so if I can get another Valiant that might be a good one to put the dual system in.
@GadgetMart7 жыл бұрын
Was it the receiver or the radio? I'm sure Spektrum will look after you if you send it in with a link to this video. (They are sadly useless now here in the UK).

I got another one! IO think the 30cc Valiant is the best airframe out there for general flying, rudder work, just a ton of fun to fly. Thanks for your thoughts. Every year on that day from here forward I face the East and thank the spirits of aerodynamics for that plane design.

Would you still fly on a crashed receiver if it hadn’t failed?
@flyingrcdotnet4 жыл бұрын
I have but only when it was not a big-time crash and there is no damage evident. If it does anything suspicious I replace it. When I have to go out with a garbage bag to pick up the plane, the receiver stays in the garbage bag.

ANOTHER Valiant crash? Those things must be back luck for you!
@flyingrcdotnet6 жыл бұрын
It would be nice to blame this on bad luck but reality suggests I flat screwed up. It is possible that I get over confident regarding the capabilities of this airframe because it just flies so well in a huge range of circumstances. I get this "superman" complex or something and I went too far. I also fly my Valiant a ton so it is "exposed" to danger way more than any other plane I have owned.
