This is my biggest beef with malyalam movies, Indian movies in general. There is this very long and drawn out first act to establish the world and the characters that the audience doesn’t really need. The best example I can think of is Mad Max Fury Road, within a few minutes that movie establishes the world and the main players within the flow of the script. It gives the viewer all this information without long exposition or a drawn out first act. If you compare the movie Momento with Ghajini, the first scene in Momento drops the viewer into the action, the pace is exciting right from the beginning. Whereas Ghajini starts with the main character how he meets the girl and how great she is and how they get married, dancing and singing before they get to the actual story. I feel like a lot of these scriptwriters start with a seed of an interesting idea but they don’t manage to really flesh it out properly. So it feels like the story for a short film awkwardly stretched out into feature film length.

syam pushkaran said this somewhere - audience will figure out who is who after each scenes. if audience feel they are being spoon fed, writing is pathetic!. First act is good but it is not mandatory at the beginning of the movie.
