Did this route last December by car from Athirappillli. Looks like they have done most of the road works. Awesome scenery on the way, and also as you say the expectation to see a wild animal on the road was adding to the excitement, unfortunately we did not see anything but the langur and the big squirrel. For bike riders this is one dream route.
