We get to see the keepsakes people have hidden at home in this hybrid antique show and appraisal fair video! It's amazing what comes out of the woodwork when a museum sponsors a gathering of dealers and collectors to swap stories, buy and sell antiques, and view vintage items brought by regular folks curious what the value of their heirlooms might be.
We're back in the Midwest, and our quick view of the Newburgh, Indiana antique show reveals quaint quilts and primitives, ironstone and crocks--but also vibrant vintage signs, sparkling jewelry and uranium glass! We make a round and put a few things on our go back to buy list, while enjoying cigar linen throws and an amazingly cute child's sized oak cabinet we've never seen on such a petite scale.
But the appraisal fair is where the amazement happens! We've never seen a lot of these pieces before, and some of them are real discoveries. Along with fun 1950s TV lamps, a stylish set for the sick and a wildly carved chair, we discover gifts people got that now have great significance, including a five-figure painting and a photo album of WWII dignitaries taken by one of the few people in the room at a major conference of world leaders! The Midwest sure has a lot of interesting things, and we have a great time appreciating them and helping their owners understand their true value.
We leave with a few good buys of our own, and take heart that so many people are stewards of tremendous pieces of our world's heritage!

Oh, George, I got a big laugh over the historic photo album. The photo identified as Haile Selassie that you spoke about with the lady was actually a photo of Chiang Kai-shek, the head of China!! Those photos are of significant importance of which I am sure you are aware. It would be easy to track down which conference that was and compare their images online.

Hi, George, the sharp hooked end on the little oil lamp was t to pull the wick out, it was to stick into a beam to hold the lamp, that's why it's flared from the needle- like end.

What a great appraisal fair George, thank you! So thrilled with the Martin Boyd bowl as I've not seen him shown/discussed before! I, too, thrifted a piece, your 🇨🇦 neighbour: a pristine condition decorative hanging plate (untouched by any hanging apparatuses phew) of an Aboriginal hunter crouched with his spear in front of a desert background. It's just beautiful and in my forever collection 😍

WOW I learned a few different things here. Did not realize they had clothe liners in old cigar boxes, I have only seen the wooden and cardboard ones though. Then the pics of WWII had no idea on who they all were at all. Did some research on Haile Selassie he is an interesting read for sure. Being Rastafarian and died in 1975 he led a very active life. How cool, thanks for sharing your knowledge and letting me tag along. Have a wonderful day

Good evening, George! There was what looked like either a milk glass or custard glass kerosene lamp, just to the left of the Wedgwood pitchers, that really caught my eye. Those hair mourning jewelry pieces were really nice. I'd like to have the two main pieces there. That seemed a super-good deal on them. The small oak cabinet was super-nice! I wouldn't mind having that. I really liked that German bible, but I loved the sick call set! I'd pay $150.00 for that in a heartbeat. I have a couple of the Consolidated Glass "Cosmos" lamps. Mine, with the shade, has a shade that matches the font, (not clear). The other one didn't come with a shade. I liked the hand-forged oil lamp. That post WWII album was amasing! It was like a museum, in itself, between two covers! That was a fantastic appraisal fair!!! Thanks for sharing it with us!!!!!
@TheAntiqueNomad
@TheAntiqueNomad Жыл бұрын
Hello! I thought the hair jewelry and the sick call set were both awfully neat too, and I agree the oak cabinet was a deal. I was surprised to see the Cosmos shade in clear, but I've seen so many where they had peeling paint that I suspect Consolidated had quality control issues with those. I really had fun doing this and I"m glad you enjoyed it!

13:43 Not a Bible - a prayer book/missal, best guess. Even a New Testament would be a LOT bigger than that, but a prayer book was something you carried. My house still has lead paint in it. It's tough stuff and won't hurt anyone as long as you leave it strictly alone. Not sure I'd want to use a can of it now though.
@TheAntiqueNomad
@TheAntiqueNomad Жыл бұрын
Good to know, I don't speak German well enough to have determined and a missal makes sense. I agree about lead paint, people are very focused on it but it doesn't jump off the walls and into your body!

Yes, it's a Roman Catholic Missal. It was likely given as a gift for the young lady's first holy communion because the holy card depicts a young girl receiving her first holy communion from Christ. I have several from my family dating between the 1870s and the late 1960s. They are a traditional gift for first communion.

I have a very similar triangular shaped chair to the one you appraised but mine is lighter oak, has 4 legs and seems smaller, more for a lady. I was told it may have been a chair used on a train. I have no idea if that is true. Funny, I have a similar, small German bible that you appraised next and also the same wooden box that came after but mine has had the contents removed. What are the odds?😊
