Can you please tell me what the canvas size is in pixels? I also feel like the photo has more contrast. Or is an image with less contrast is easier to be colorized?

can anyone explain to me why he merged the painting with the background then sort of re-cut it out with the magnetic lasso tool? Why didn't he just merge the two layers he'd been painting on without the background and then layer lock that layer in order to paint on the non-transparent part only? What's the point of merging the painted layers with the background then cutting it out like that?
