To the young (and hungry) guys out there watching this, the things Pat's talking about like thick skin, resiliency, long term vision, etc are critical in sales, but also valuable in any profession. They're traits that have been less than common in every generation, not just yours. If you develop them within yourself, you will dominate.

If you want to jump into sales, I highly recommend you have some savings to pay the bills until you start making money. I recommend you don't party on your high income months, instead, put some money aside to get you through the tough time - because you WILL have down months. And for the love of everything good, set aside some money for taxes! Bonus: have your commissions paid into an LLC or similar entity. You will have the ability to write off more items and qualify for different tax credits.

Key is to overcome rejections. That’s not easy
@fishhuntadventure2 ай бұрын
I disagree. Even the idea of ‘overcoming’ is an attitude that you are coming up short before you even start. Sure, there’s going to be “objections” but there’s also the fact that your presentation has to be prepared and robust enough that the objection is covered in the course of your presentation AND if you ask the questions before you go deep you already know what the prospect’s mindset is. Face it, you are there because they want or need what you sell. They are likely to buy from someone: give them the opportunity to buy from you because you are the best outcome. You ain’t gonna win every time because sometimes your customers fail to see the value, or budget, or whatever. However, having objections with an ‘overcome’ mindset just means you didn’t prepare and do the work before you ever met them. Knowing your weak points and handling the elephant in the room before those points even come is handling objections, not overcoming them. Just make yourself that good.

I have a sticky note in my office that says, "make the phone call." Sales can have a lot of negative from rejection, sharing bad news, failing, and a general grind. Sales is hard but leaning on behaviors like making the phone call you need to make but don't want to make is what will help you succeed. I also have three kids and a stay at home wife so I have no choice 😂

My father worked as a procurement director for a large o&g company, and every year during Christmas his vendors would give him no less then 10 hampers, 10 plus bottles of wine and whiskey, and many would take him out for dining and I wanted this. I wanted to be courted like that, but I started my own business and had to, in turn be the like my father's vendors and court my clients and I will attest to it that courting a client is way more exciting then being courted by them.

Great Video! I’m 17 years old and im starting a marketing business for martial arts dojos and i used to day trade. I wanted to start this business because I believe sales is one of the only things that won’t be taken over by ai and sales is 2/3 of the business model but im horrible at talking to people right now and I do believe I have a weak mind when it comes to rejection but that’s exactly why i wanted to get into this because I want to improve at those areas. Why do you say that you won’t make it in sales if these things are true? Are most of them not learned behaviors?

My biggest problem with sales. When I am making good money, I get bored and lazy. I don't like it but I keep on repeating the same mistakes. To the point that I don't have the desire anymore. And I have to awaken my desire again, motivate myself and it is a tiring process. It is like I am a lion and turned into a sheep. And I need to get back to my lion form for me to be effective. I lost a lot of money last year as a result of poor investing decisions that I would not have made if I hadn't been so worried about my portfolio. Answer : most salespeople are bluffers and liars. They have a persona that's not them which come across as disingenuous. Also care too much about money to the point that they rationalise taking advantage of older people and uninformed as a hustle.
@802Leith2 ай бұрын
Average 5 NO responses to overcome before you get to yes. Listening is the most important sales technique. Your customer will reveal their needs. Example don't sell a new parents a sports car because they are looking at it in your showroom most likely they're looking for safety ease of getting car seats in and out. Asking key questions about possible objections gets to yes quicker. NO is not a four letter word. Your job is sevice. I started selling seeds doir to door out of a cardboard box at 10 years old. know your product. Upsell sure if you bought tomato seeds from me I knew marigolds were a companion plant to keep bugs off the tomatoes. Sales isnt hard your customers are a list of greenery tend them like a gardener. The easiest sale is to a repeat happy customer and their trusted friends. Rip someone off they tell ten people you are a bum your best customers will maybe tell 3 how good you are protect your reputation. The more doors you knocked and opened the more you will make. Qualify quickly. Just a few notes to add to great advice.

Its just hilarious hearing stuff like this most the time. Because its easy to speak a certain way after you already made it. Im of the mindset that if you put people in a similar position, or in a good position to succeed, most people will. There are shit salespeople or employees out there, lazy people, etc. But alot of times it stems from the actual job, product, circumstances, and not the person. Most these jobs suck, the products suck, the margins suck, etc. etc. etc.
@ThatsNotVeryFunnyLol2 ай бұрын
The thing Ill say is that sales will definitely teach you so many valuable lessons and give you alot of tools to succeed, in multiple different aspects of life and different types of jobs, not just sales.

Another issue too is that sales jobs are extremely easy to get. The turnovers rates are extremely high for obvious reasons. The numbers are enticing, it seems easy, easy way out, possibility of you earning 6 figures with no degree and bad job history. Alot of people go into sales looking for a solution to being broke and down bad. The issue is, almost impossible to survive in sales when you're broke. You dont have the luxury of having slow months or a slow start or waiting for your commission checks. And if you luck into a situation where you happen to make alot of money quickly, props. Thats not the majority of people's experiences.

Self gen sales guys may get paid more cash-wise, but they're on the hook for EVERYTHING. Plus, it's all or nothing. You either sell, or you go broke. Plenty of call center sales guys make 6 figures.
