However, I didn't see this as 'normal' because my parents taught me it wasn't. I was quite shocked when I first heard about the R. Kelly/ Aaliyah underage marriage scandal, but I wasn't even sure it was true because it didn't seem to be followed up on. Of course, this has since been verified. If something similar had happened to me at that age, and my parents had discovered it, they would have gone to the police. In Aaliyah's case, either her parents didn't know or they chose to turn a blind eye.
