I'm doing this job and more on my 2000 Audi A6 Quattro Avant, and I have done it once before on my wives Vehicle which is identical to mine. This video was a great refresher to the job that I had done a few years ago. I too found oil in all of the spark plug wells, and there was a lot of sludge in the upper areas of the valve covers which were restricting the breather hoses and the plastic syphon pump was clogged. All of the breather hose issues and the syphon pump were the cause of the oil leaks and the failure of the spark plug well seals. I've added you feed to my list of resources for working on our Audi vehicles.

Dude! I have literally done my car engine over because over because of these videos. I just did the water pump, timing belt, tensioner pulley, serpentine belt, valve cover gasket, cam seals, spark plugs and wires. oh and the radiator (no video for that but it was easy enough) I am not a mechanic, I am one of your "do it yourselfers" thanks again car is running, need to connect everything back, get a knock sensor code. I will button it up later this week, but if you can point me in the direct to plug that bad boy in that would be awesome. I am sure its right in front of my face.

Hi. Thanks very much for the video. Great instruction. Page D-15-6 of the Bentley gives the torques for the V6 - 10nm (7 ft pounds) for the Double Bearing Cap, same too for the 8 valve cover nuts and the 2 bolts connecting the camshaft position sensor housing. All the nuts and bolts that are 10 mm are the 10 nm (7 ft-lb). The 13mm bolt under the camshaft position sensor is 25 nm (18 ft pounds) -- the small aluminum cap it holds on can only go on in one position. Thanks again RatchetsAndWrenches - next weekend is the passenger side with the half moon seal.
@roter65449 жыл бұрын
ROTER Forgot to add, the four Torx bolts are also 10 nm (7 ft-lbs)

ROTER A bit more info... turns out that the camshaft seal from Victor Reinz (and others) is a new PTFE Seal Lip Design. From their website: "Installation Surface MUST be Clean and Completely Dry. Do not use any oil or grease on Sealing Surface. In order to ensure a secure seal, the motor should not be operated for at least 4 hours after installation so the PTFE sealing lip can be evenly positioned around the shaft being sealed**" Video says to use oil, but that only applies to the old seal type with the spring. This backed up by Bentley.. Minor thing, easy to solve. Other than that.. spot on! Thanks

You should do the gasket and the camshaft cap on the passenger side, you'll need to remove the air filter housing and remove the bolt for the oil dipstick. You'll either need to buy a very short torx bit to remove the camshaft bearing holding in the camshaft cap at the back of the engine or cut a torx bit to make it shorter(what I did). There is no room to fit a regular size bit with a ratchet over the bolt and if you try doing it at an angle you risk stripping out the inside of the bolt. GL
@myRatchets11 жыл бұрын
No you dont have to touch the camshaft, just remove the bearing cap. The process for the other side is actually easier since you have more room. Torque for valve cover 9ft/lbs and the bearing cap 14ft/lbs. I am taking an educated guess here as I dont have the manual for this engine. GL

I just did this to my wife's 2000 A6 2.8. Thank you very much for the video, excellent video. I also had collateral damage with the hoses to the combination (EGR) valves. I have been googling till I'm blind, where can I get the hoses?
@myRatchets11 жыл бұрын
you wont need the special tool for the valve cover gasket and camshaft cap, but for the cam chain tensioner gasket and half moon seal(blue seal) you will need a special tool to depress the cam chain tensioner.
@sassankarai5508 жыл бұрын
The problem was fairly easy to correct. It had to do with the alignment of the sensor which is mounted in a fixed position inside the cap (the one you take off held in by 2 x 10 mm bolts) and the opening of camshaft seal plate (held in by 1x 13mm bolt). When I took the plate off the opening appeared to be facing straight up. It needs to face slightly to the side to match the sensor position in the sealing cap. Mark the centerline of the sensor on the cap - make a corresponding mark on the valve cover. Now install the camshaft seal plate with the opening centered on the line you made on the valve cover. Then put the cap back on - all marks should line up now and you're good to go. You may have to clear out the P0346 alert once more before the corrected position is recognized.

hi sassan do you have an email i need help with this thank you
@myRatchets11 жыл бұрын
You can change the camshaft seal, it wont require tearing the car apart but its a little difficult. If I remember correctly you will have to remove the intake camshaft with the camshaft tensioner itselt, there are obviously other steps you'll need to take like marking the chain and setting TDC...etc I would invest in a good repair guide if you want to tackle that job. by valley plugs I assume you mean the spark plug hole seal and you'll see/replace it when you remove the Valve Cover. GL
@myRatchets11 жыл бұрын
I take that back the process for the other side might be alittle harder since you will have to remove the air filter housing and the oil dipstick. Also make sure you get a small size torx bit to fit over the screws that hold the cam bearing in place other wise you might strip them. gl
@myRatchets11 жыл бұрын
it is Usually not needed, but you never know. Make sure when you get the valve covers off you clean the area as much as possible because after you put everything back together it will still smoke for quite some time before everything is burned off. I think thats why alot of people think they half moon seal leaks aswell.. they keep seeing the smoke afterwards which is just the left over gunk and oil. But the moon seal could be leaking. I'll make a video on the seal next time I get a 2.8L passat.
@ksk55173 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing. Just one suggestion: it would be helpful if you can zoom-in on specific parts you are referring to, in addition to just pointing fingers, so that we have a better idea how it looks like if we not in front of a car engine.
@myRatchets11 жыл бұрын
Your leak could be the cam seal or cap or crank seal. Also make sure you drive the car for a little while so all the old gunk gets burned up, sometimes it takes a while. Also if the noise up front is coming from the tensioner that you can visually see its the serpentine belt tensioner but if its coming from behind that where the timing belt and components are it could be the timing belt tensioner and needs to be taken care off asap. Ofcourse these are all guesses without seeing the car. GL

I will be doing a half moon seal video sometime soon so stay tuned, the connector is part of the pcv tubing. I dont remember exactly but that one might go into/under neath the intake manifold and somewhat difficult to replace, plus you have to go to the dealer for it. I just used zip ties to keep it in place. gl
@myRatchets11 жыл бұрын
Oh and you'll need a special tool to depress the chain tensioner so add that to the list as well. I would replace valve cover gasket and cap than see if I still have a leak and go from there.
@myRatchets11 жыл бұрын
Alot of time people replace those while in there. I didnt do it on this car though. and dont apply sealant/RTV silicone to the entire gasket just the areas mentioned in the video. I might do a video on the half moon seal and chain tensioner gasket later if I get another 2.8L VW in my sight. GL

@myRatchets11 жыл бұрын
Sounds like you have leaking spark plug tube seals, if you remove the valve cover you will see it. Most valve cover gaskets come with it. If you havent done this before I recommend getting someone else to first verify this than do the repair. If you dont replace the valve cover gasket right you will get a leak elsewhere. GL

Excellent video!! I am in the process of replacing the seals on my 2003 Passat V6. I did the drivers side like your video shows but the passenger side is different. The back of that side of the engine there is a chain. Are there seals back there that need to be changed, other than the cap? I was told that there are 4 seals for this engine. Thanks!!
@myRatchets11 жыл бұрын
If memory serves me right on the drivers side, in the back you can only change the cap, the seal for that sides cam position sensor is in the front of the head and its best replaced when doing the timing belt, but you can pop off the timing belt cover on that side and see if you can access it without removing the belt. The chain you see is the camshaft timing chain, for the pass sides its in the rear and driver side is in the front. It does have a gasket and a seal that sometimes leaks, replacing those is a little more involved, I will have a video on them next time I get a passat. But usually replacing the cap and valve cover gasket will take care of any oil leaks you have on that side. GL

No the tranny doesnt have to be touched if you are replacing the seals. Only reason the tranny would need to be removed is to replace the rear main seal which very rarely leaks, you probably have a leak from your valve cover gasket or cam seal or the other seals I mentioned earlier and the leak has reached down below the engine and might have confused the person looking at your car.
