Great, great suggestion on using a piece of cardboard and placing the bolts in a diagram sketch. Made things easy by removing any guess work. Plus, I've always heard it's good to put the same bolt back into the slot it came from to avoid even the smallest problem with getting a good thread fit. Thanks!

@@vornado8715 I cant remember how long it took cuz I did a few other things also. The alternator went out and noticed oil on it. Saw that it was coming from that valve cover. I had a few problems. 1st I bought the alternator before I started the job and it waz the wrong alternator so it took me the day to find the right one. 2nd the tension pulley was leaking and I couldnt find one to replace it so I bought it online and took 3 days to get to me. Was told that Kia parts are hard to find. 3rd the pulley on the alternator was larger than the original pulley so I got a larger belt. Was always something! Other than all this other stuff I believe it took less than 2hours. I think the hardest part was putting it back on with the wires in the way so I got my wife to help for a bit. It probably was less than 2 hours I just cant remember

It depends on the mileage and warranties on the car. In my case my car had 150,000 miles so when I asked about its while ago they categorized it as a normal wear, but yes try contacting a nearby dealership to see if they will fix this issue.
@nicewig2004

The 3.3L was new for the '07 SF. I am the original-owner of my car. Over its 10 year warranty period, I took it 3 times for the same valve cover leak issue. I spaced repair visits out giving a different dealer a shot at permanantly fixing the issue. I had hoped time and complaints would cause and allow Hyundia to figure out a permanent solution. After my alternator was ruined by the second leak, I changed it myself with an AutoZone one. Sometime after that the leak/alternator recall was issued. I though that Hyundia had finally figured things out. WRONG! I am getting ready to sell my SF with only 108k miles. I after viewing this and other videos I decided to give the fix a try myself I now know to try some RTV gasket sealant (which I see no tell-tale sign of being used from dealer tries).
@nicewig2004
@nicewig2004 5 жыл бұрын
I added a previous comment. Read it first then read this. I followed the instructions in this video and did the job myself. To start, I was dismayed to find that I could take many of the 19 bolts out with just a socket, no ratchet handle needed!! Many others were barely snug. Only a few might have been torqued to specs. Upon cleaning the valve cover I noticed stand-offs had been incorporated into the cover design at each of the mounting bolts. These stand-offs make contact with the mating surface of the head providing maybe a 0.10 thousandths inch gap for the gasket to seal. In reassembling the cover, I ran through the torquing sequence four times before I felt reasonably confident that I had achieved my goal. Regardless, I will drive the car several weeks and then recheck torque values again. I suspect the last dealer attempt (and likely the others too) did not go through the torquing trouble I went through. They might have gone through the sequence once and called it good. They also used the OEM Hyundia gasket instead of the Felpro one. Finally, it might be worth a shot to check the cover bolt torque before tearing it apart. Possibly retorquing could slow or stop the leak. THANKS FOR THE GREAT VIDEO!

This is the 3rd time that Hyundai has told me that there is a recall on the "front" Valve cover gasket that should be changed because it could make the alternator fail. I had the gasket changed in 2010(?) and again in 2016 and they are telling me on their Webpage and at the dealers that I am not eligible for the recall because I had it done in 2016. I bought the 2008 Santa Fe new in 2009 and have replaced the gasket 2 times and am personally doing it again for a 3rd time now. This time the alternator failed. I was driving the car and I lost power brakes, steering, Speedo, tach and all of the dash lights then came on and off and off and on. It was quite a ride for a while but both the local dealer where I bought the car and Hyundai Canada said they would do nothing and could not give me a fix that would work. I believe they don't know of a fix because I'm not sure it's the "front" valve cover that is leaking but may be the timing cover leaking. A much bigger job and they don't want to be on the hook for that! So they've convinced the Motor Vehicle Safety Branch that it is the Valve cover gasket and they can all go home to their wives and kids at night and tell them what a great job they're doing and how safe they are keeping our cars. I don't blame Hyundai any more than the Motor Vehicle Safety Branch because Hyundai is responsible to their share holders. Not to You and Me!!! They don't care!

There is actually a updated part made by Fel-Pro. Much thicker and higher quality gasket and I have not had any issue with that one. Make sure you put a little bit of extra RTV where the timing chain cover meats the head. Make sure to re-torque in specific order to spec. OEMS wont use Fel-Pro because they are not an OEM Gaskets, so they just keep replacing the part with the same crap one.

If you replace the gasket because of oily spark plugs, it should fix the problem right? When replacing the gasket the old one looked good but the spark plugs where sumerged in oil so I replaced it anyways, but did a test run and was working fine but quickly returned to have problems. Checked the spark plugs and they had oil trace (not as much as the first time but I guess enough for the engine to fail) Cleaned them and checked the torque on the screws did another test run and came back with the same problem. Any clues?
@Skipp3rBuds
@Skipp3rBuds 5 жыл бұрын
That's quite interesting if you properly replaced the spark plug tube hole gaskets there shouldn't be any oil. Double check to make sure there's no crack on your valve cover and replace the pcv valve as well to maybe help relieve any pressure. Did you torque to spec or did the gasket maybe slip out when you installed the new ones? My last guess would be that maybe there was some residual oil that dripped onto them from before due to the engine getting warm.

I'd give your dealership a call, and definetly do not do what I say withought any research as this is kind of a disclaimer. If you cannot find where to get a replica, I would recommend taking out another bolt to compare and bring it to a bolt store(ace, menards) to find out the thread and pitch. Assuming they don't have aluminum bolts at the store of your choice find the length of the bolt as well and order it online. Do not use a normal bolt however, make sure it is the proper material! Hope this helps! TlDR: No

The felpro gasket is a updated part with extra thickness along where it leaks. As long as you put a extra touch of silicone on where it is leak prone and clean very well it will hold up for a long time. So far I've driven 10k miles since and have no problems with leakage. Id assume other people who did this job and it leaked used another oem hyundai gasket that's not updated thus not even fixing the problem.

Hey , a few questions : 1. Do you need to let the gasket set in the cover for a few hours ? 2. Do you need to wait that the ultra black gasket maker hardens ? 3. When you put the valve cover back on with the new gasket, do you need to apply a lot of pressure ? 4. When removing the valve cover gasket, can you use a screw driver to separate it from the engine block ? Can you wiggle it out ?
@Skipp3rBuds
@Skipp3rBuds 4 жыл бұрын
1. After the job I let my car set overnight just to make sure. However, it's probably fine to drive right away. 2. Put on cover right away after you set it. Let sit overnight then. 3. Only hand pressure for pressing the gaskets into place onto the cover. As far as tightening the valve cover bolts down, I believe I said the torque spec somewhere in the video. Should be 6.5 N-M but double check. If you don't have a torque wrench just tighten it in the pattern until they feel tight. DO NOT OVER TIGTEN. They are aluminum bolts and will shear under a lower torque. 4. Do not use anything metal to scrape away any gasket. Aka do not scratch any part of the mating surface. Hope this helps :)

Steve O'Donald Most likely and it's pretty much the same process on the other side it's just a pain since the whole intake plenum has to come off and if your going to be taking that off you might as well be doing a lot more work like plugs and maybe wires among other things. I've taken off the plenum before and it's not an easy task just takes time. I only did the front side because I didn't care if it leaked on the backside because there's not a lot back there but on the front side it would just leak onto the alternator and other things and cause issues.

Rear valve cover gasket blew on our Hyundai sonata. It's spewing oil on the rear exhaust manifold causing rolling smoke from under the hood and intake into the cabin. It seems wise while you're in there to just replace both gaskets. The intake plenum should be relatively easy to remove within less than a half hour.

What about the rear 🤔
@Luckingsworth

So this is an issue with the 3.3L? Mine is the 2.7. I was considering doing it while I had most of it already apart for the plugs and timing belt but if this is a known issue I will be forced to do it. But I'm hoping it's not with the 2.7 for peace of mind lol.
@Skipp3rBuds
@Skipp3rBuds 5 жыл бұрын
To answer the question shortly, I have no idea about the 2.7L but I do know the 3.8 has the same issue. However, if you have the cover already taken off I always strongly suggest replacing any gaskets you take off as they will not have seat as well as they did from the factory. I mean the part is only around $20 so if you don't mind a little extra work I'd recommend just doing it. Hope this helps :)

@@Skipp3rBuds I could be wrong but on my 2011 V6 Veracruz under the plastic intake there is another valve cover or what looks exactly like one with 3 more spark plug coils. Also when I bought the gaskets it came with 2 and the recall on the car refers to the front cylinder bank being the problem giving off the sense that there is also a rear cylinder bank from everything I’m seeing. Also on google it says “v configured engines like a v6 or v8 will have 2 valve covers one on each side” I’m just trying to figure out for sure if that’s what it is and if I want to mess with taking the whole intake off. And thanks for the response.

I can personally live with a tiny leak onto the exhaust headers considering the time and expense of removing the intake plenum and all that extra wiring, etc just to replace the rear. Hope that helps clarify
