I actually played the Left 4 Dead arcade game! I remember being so surprised and confused by its existence (and the nunchuck) that I had to play it. The “memory card” you mentioned isn’t actually a memory card, but rather a sort of NFC ID card that lets you sync your play session with your profile stored on a game server, letting you retain unlocks and scores etc. They work on a wide variety of machines usually by the same publisher. I have one specifically to play rhythm games whenever I go to Japan!

The economic pressure on Japanese arcades has been steadily increasing over the past handful of years. Basically, they try to ensure a "one coin, one game" experience but inflation and taxes are making it impossible to maintain that. So whether Japanese arcade goers will be deterred by having to use more coins will be the real determining factor, especially when you consider that social norms over there already encouraged masks and distancing when illnesses are going around.

A lot of old arcade games from the 2000’s and (just a few since the arcades were really dying) in the 2010’s actually ran on low budget PCs, slightly modified to work with their custom controls. For example, the Sega Ringwide and Ringedge series, and the Half Life 2 game features in this video. This means many of them can be ported to PC without too much trouble, and others can be emulated with programs like TeknoParrot, which mainly just helps them work on more modern OSs and support more accessible controllers.

*Lode Runner* received a coin-up conversion, as well, with remixed levels and a couple of extra features (ie a bonus enemy hidden in one of the blocks) and it received a couple of sequels later on. So did *Tetris* and *Sokoban* , come to think of it. Considering all of the (fan-made) variants available (ie The Legend Returns/Online, XBox Live Arcade; *Bloxeed* and the *Plus* series for *Tetris* ) for these classics, I wouldn't mind if features from those past titles made it into a future (mod friendly?) 'Definitive' or 'Anniversary' Edition. Imagine a friendly rivalry between Rockford and Repton in multiplayer (to say nothing of the 'stories' they could tell each other). ^_^ **sigh** If only... 9_9
