I actually played the Left 4 Dead arcade game! I remember being so surprised and confused by its existence (and the nunchuck) that I had to play it. The “memory card” you mentioned isn’t actually a memory card, but rather a sort of NFC ID card that lets you sync your play session with your profile stored on a game server, letting you retain unlocks and scores etc. They work on a wide variety of machines usually by the same publisher. I have one specifically to play rhythm games whenever I go to Japan!

The economic pressure on Japanese arcades has been steadily increasing over the past handful of years. Basically, they try to ensure a "one coin, one game" experience but inflation and taxes are making it impossible to maintain that. So whether Japanese arcade goers will be deterred by having to use more coins will be the real determining factor, especially when you consider that social norms over there already encouraged masks and distancing when illnesses are going around.

A lot of old arcade games from the 2000’s and (just a few since the arcades were really dying) in the 2010’s actually ran on low budget PCs, slightly modified to work with their custom controls. For example, the Sega Ringwide and Ringedge series, and the Half Life 2 game features in this video. This means many of them can be ported to PC without too much trouble, and others can be emulated with programs like TeknoParrot, which mainly just helps them work on more modern OSs and support more accessible controllers.

*Lode Runner* received a coin-up conversion, as well, with remixed levels and a couple of extra features (ie a bonus enemy hidden in one of the blocks) and it received a couple of sequels later on. So did *Tetris* and *Sokoban* , come to think of it. Considering all of the (fan-made) variants available (ie The Legend Returns/Online, XBox Live Arcade; *Bloxeed* and the *Plus* series for *Tetris* ) for these classics, I wouldn't mind if features from those past titles made it into a future (mod friendly?) 'Definitive' or 'Anniversary' Edition. Imagine a friendly rivalry between Rockford and Repton in multiplayer (to say nothing of the 'stories' they could tell each other). ^_^ **sigh** If only... 9_9

One bit of trivia about HL2 Survivor I was disappointed that you didn't mention: Buried in the game data is the first official HL2 Gordon Freeman model to ever make it into the public's hands. It's been optimized for gameplay/the hardware and is therefore not the exact same high-quality one seen in promotional renders, but it is still *the* HL2 Gordon model. It was probably meant for the tutorial images and cutscenes.

i think the massive brightly colored arrows are to speed players along, so that more people can play the same machine. pretty smart

If I was ever stupidly rich, one of the few eccentric and agregeously frivelous things I would use my money for is hunting down an arcade cabinet of Half-Life 2: Survivor. I've always wanted one.

I was watching this while making a cheeseburger, and I tucked my phone into my pocket while walking back to my room after it was done. Had some sort of spasm or something while opening the door, barely caught the plate and somehow only lost the top bun and a little cheese.

I swear when I get a time machine, I'll make sure that White Memories never exists. Just you wait.

This needs a part 2 that branches out to other weird ports TO arcade. Off the top of my head; Farcry Paradise Lost Silent Hill the Arcade Counter strike Neo Halo: Fireteam Raven Minecraft Dungeons Arcade Tomb raider 2018 (really) Luigi’s mansion Dark Moon Quake Flappy bird (I swear there is a 3 to 4 metre high “Arcade Machine” with this in Australia) Fruit ninja Infinity blade And probably more?

On the topic of L4D Survivors models i think you can replace the survivor dialogue with the Japanese L4D Survivors dialogue and now I'm hoping for a translation of the Survivors subtitles and ported to the workshop!

13:27 I can relate to Sho because I too am not so cheerful, but not so gloomy. Usually, I talk with people as a normal person. However, I do not communicate with people deeply. In other word, I need this game. That English definitely leaves the impression that Valve had little involvement in this Japanese Counterstrike visual novel for Flash. That is definitely a sentence.

I wanted to point out two things. First, the arcade is built entirely around "pick and up play" simplicity and constant action, so the changes made to the arcade version of Half-Life 2 were meant to accommodate that, not necessarily the Japanese market per se. Second, you do get the gravity gun, but much later in the game than you do in the PC version.

You know, I'd argue that Counterstrike's biggest strength was not having waifus.

Off the top of my mind, two more games that were imported from consoles to arcades were Need for Speed Carbon and Racedriver GRID.
