Valve Tappet Clearance Adjustment Suzuki V-Strom 1000 (Part 1)

The Urban Monk takes a necessary break from work on his cafe racer project to do some routine maintenance on his 2012 Suzuki V-Strom 1000 - a valve clearance inspection and adjustment.
The procedures and steps detailed here will useful to anyone doing a valve/tappet clearance adjustment on a DL1000, SV1000 or TL1000. It would also translate well to owners of DL650, SV650, SFV650. Finally, it contains helpful information for doing a valve clearance check on any overhead cam motorcycle engine.

That's very true. I've gotten faster about it, but it still takes me 15 minutes to get the fairings off to do even the simplest thing like inspect an air filter. As for the front spark plug, I've figured out a way to do that without draining and removing the radiator. But for valves, you have to go all in. I get a sense of satisfaction having done it myself and saved the labor.

Thanks for watching. There are some repair scenarios where one would need access to the ends of the camshafts and those crescents allow that access. However, checking and changing tappet clearances isn't one of those cases.

Replace the o-rings and gaskets. They're cheap, and you know everything will seal properly when it goes back together.

Thanks for watching! While I appreciate your intent, I thought I'd add some numbers and details of my experience to this. I looked up the cost of these o-rings and gaskets on suzukipartshouse.com and found they run US$106.22 before shipping. I currently have over 66,000 miles on my bike and am still running the original gaskets, o-rings and bolt seals. I've had the valve covers off 4 times to check the tappet clearance. No leaks yet.

@@UrbanMonkTV that's great! Replacing the gaskets is more of a personal preference, I guess. I like the peace of mind new gaskets give me. Lets me sleep better at night 😆.
