People used to say streamline dubs were bad, but I always dug them. D and the Fist of the North Star one are actually quite a bit better than the japanese version. The writing is also bad ass. I notice they often take the original OST and alter it slightly. In D, they'd often extend the music in some scenes and it worked a lot better.

The designs for the VHD OVA were done by the same guy (Yoshitaka Amano) who did the book illustrations, concept-art for final fantasy and a bunch of anime series for animation-company Tatsunoko pro but very few other OVAs. His work here looks like his work on television series but slightly upgraded. They snuck in the monster from Basket Case into the hallway with all the other monsters. Also the dub is glorious, like Roquefort mixed into a quiche lorraine.

Wow never expected to see you watching vampire hunter d, especially this one. I always like D as a character, its a like the anime version of Blade. I would say, watch the second one, its better, and even if it have a lot of digital effect and stuff, the art it's pretty great (i think it was a high budget movie, higher than this one or a tv series at least)

Bloodlust is much much better! The big reason for the weird pacing is that this was supposed to be a 2-part OVA, but part way into production, the studio decided that they would turn it into a feature film and they left out a lot of the story, which unfortunately the result was as you saw. It's a shame though, I kinda understand their thinking, but a 2-part OVA would have made for better viewing.

Nerdy fact- this is a whole different voice track than the one I'm used to. Not just the voice actors, but the dialogue is slightly different too. I'm guessing this is newer, as the picture is also as lot cleaner than the DVD I have (circa early 2000s) That bit about "rather be dead than hear Gecko's voice any more" was hilarious tho, I guess the NOLA accent sorta fits the character design but it's so bad 😂😂

Yeah, this is the 2015 Sentai Filmworks dub instead of the 1992 Streamline Dub, I’ve heard people talk about the more recent dub supposedly being more in line with the original Japanese script, barring differences stemming from translating between language families with different grammar styles and rules, combined with the animation of mouths/lip flaps, but I’ve also seen a strange reverence for the older dub from the same folks who whine and complain when even the slightest change is made to convey the same point between languages, lots of pictures of machine translated Japanese text next to official subtitles as if machine translation isn’t the stiffest, most awkward, and unnatural way to translate between two very different languages.

Vampire Hunter D is a lot of things (horror, sci-fi, & adventure), but people are surprised to find that Hideyuki Kikuchi's original inspiration for the franchise was American Westerns. D is the quintessential Western hero: a wanderer motivated by his past while also running from it, stumbling upon the troubles of others who enlist his aid, before forsaking himself back to the wasteland like the man caught between worlds he truly is. D is the same classical transient hero as Rooster Cogburn, Shane, and the Man With No Name, but instead of fighting outlaws and bandits he fights mutants and monsters.

This was the very first anime I ever watched back in 1990. The first. My parents had a satellite dish that could find dozens of video feed satellites, each with thirty or so channels on them. I don't even remember where I found this movie, but it caused a fascination with japanese anime that still persists thirty years later. They don't make them like they used to, but you still find the occasional gem. Akira, Tank Police, many others from that era are great. Vicky, the dub you watched is not the original dub. A lot of the lines were changed, and yes, the lines were not changed for the better. It made them worse. Almost every line of dialogue was changed a bit in this version compared to the original, altering the original story. It's not a writing problem, it's crappy dub dialogue alterations. There were also sound effects changed like with the flying bat guy noises. I just checked IMDB, and yes, there was a re-release in 2015, with entirely new voice actors and different lines of dialogue. Terrible that you got that version. As for Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, English is the original language it was voiced in. So, there is no awkward translation type dialogues.

The time setting is 12,090 and takes place 10,000 years after WW3 and there was a nuclear war. Gotta say, I’ve never heard this dub. I originally watched it in the late 90’s and that dub was so much better. Greco wasn’t southern. He sounded almost Spanish if I remember. Lamica and Magnus Lee also had an Eastern European, possibly Romanian, accent. Also, it wasn’t called the “woman’s moon”. It was the blood money or sanguine moon. It was supposed to be a metaphor for a woman’s period.

the Author - Hideyuki Kikuchi actually HATED this movie. By the time this movie came out there were maybe 3 or 4 books out. The series was gaining momentum but the Studio didn't think it was going to be a very good movie or series and they basically cut the budget in 1/2 when they produced the movie. One thing though, the MUSIC IS EVERYTHING. IT HELPED MAKE THE MOVIE IMO 1000%

Yoshitaka Amano, of Final Fantasy fame, did the covers for the novels, never finished the series but read a few of the books. Great far future premise. but yeah, dubs were like this for a long time, check out an ep of speed racer :P for a movie from the same era that lives up to expectations, probably, would be Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. but that's a Ghibli film and all of them are pretty great.

The streamline dub is the best way to watch this not the new one. It's very good. They always made very slight alterations to the Japanese films osts (extend or reduce the music that's already there) and dialogue that just made them better. And the voice actors are iconic. I love them both, but this is my favorite of the two. I watched it 3 times in the weekend my (high school )friend gave me the VHS, but that was in the late 90s. Watched the second in 2000 at an anime club on a nice big University projector. Incidentally, my friend back then said he didn't like it for its cheesiness too.

The original Vampire Hunter D is okay. It's one of the first anime I've ever seen and it came out before some of the big 90s classics (Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Ninja Scroll, Battle Angel, etc...). But Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust is on another level. It's one of the greatest vampire stories in ANY medium -- live action or anime. And it's so slept on. Bloodlust came out in the early 2Ks so it's showing it's age a little, but the story, action sequences and character designs are still epic. Put it definitely on your must react list.

Hello. I know this is a year later. But this is actually the first story in the 'Vampire Hunter D' series. It is not a lot of stories in one movie. The book actually explains things better. Some of the questions you ask, you would have to read the whole series to get pieces of answers for. I know you did a reaction for 'Bloodlust', which i am about to watch. 'Bloodlust' is actually the third book in the series. Both this movie, and 'Bloodlust' took liberties with the books, which is why this one seems a bit more cheesy. I do like both movies, but i like 'Bloodlust' a bit more, and i was really excited to be able to read the books which these two animes were based on. I would recommended that you read the series because you would understand more of lore. Also, i did see these two animes before i started to read the books. How they depicted the decayed world really does the books justice. Also, this is supposed to take place thousands of years in the future. Vampires had ruled the world, but then everything went into decay [the author never gets into too much detail]. It is cool that you were able to react to both of these. Now to watch your reaction to 'Bloodlust'...

oh god These dubs are not the original ones. You definitely watched the wrong version. I would suggest either not watching it with dubs or finding the version with the original dubs and re-watching the movie to cut out the cheese from it. Edit: The setting in which Vampire Hunter D takes place, the pureblood vampires are called 'Nobility.' They are also EXTREMELY powerful. The mutants are more powerful than the humans by default, and even THEY serve FAR below the vampires, yet stand above humans. The reason the Vampires even seem to keep humans around is because of their beauty and the chance for fun, and for peoples to rule over, because they originate from humans themselves. So... Yeah, their personality is entitled, but it's engrained into them. And you can't really blame them for it once they've lived for like... as they've said about him(Count Magnus Lee), 5,000 to 10,000 years and have accumulated so much wealth and power as he has.

I think Berserk series in 1997 would be right up your alley, but if you watch it I'd recommend skipping the first episode.

Yeah, the first episode is spoiler heavy. The introduction "Hand of God" at the beginning of every episode is too iconic for that series to be omitted from anybodies experience with that series.

@@parker469a thank you someone agrees for once lol. If I had a choice to watch it first time I'd skip it till the end.

Honey do not blame the writting, blame norhtamerican dubbing,by far the worst anime dubbing in the continent, but somehow nowadays has become even worse. The franchise has 35 novels and the main reason for D to live was to slay vampires and protect innocents.

Also yeah this movie can feel pretty weird but the next one follows a more conventional pacing and story. Also please watch it in japanese xD

I think part of the problem is the version you acquired. I have an English dub that is immensely better. This sounds like a low budget remake.

This not the '80s dub. This is much newer and for some reason a lot worse.

You should have watched the original 1992 dub, way more gravitas. Sentai redubbed it 2015, sucks
