When Rita wakes up from her sleep and saids “Mama what’s happening to me?” And she looks at the newspaper clipping of a woman, that’s her mother. Not the woman in the coffin on the ship. The women in the coffin is Rita but the vampire version of Rita. Like a vision from herself of what she is to become.

Absolutely right. I'm not sure where our host got the idea that was her mother. That was obviously Rita herself without makeup. She was having visions/hallucinations of her own vampirism. It was a bit like Luke seeing his own face in Vader's helmet on Dagobah. There were similar scenes as well in Dracula 2000 with Mary.

@@corvetteman0714this movie is the only one I can think of that brings Caribbean based stories and folklore to a wider audience, including the vampire mythos. This film still respects and give homage to the vampire stories and folk tales from central and Eastern Europe while adding a new layer by including the Caribbean and making it the central story. Also there is more urgency. Max’s existence relies on finding the dhampir woman (Rita). So those points make it a stand out within the sub genre.

Always loved this movie, it's so fun. One of my favorite Eddie Murphy movies. It's not Rita's mother, it's RITA. She's seeing the psychological manifestation of her vampire half. That's why Bassett plays both parts. Turning into animals and people is the same power. Shapeshifting.

What alot of people miss about this movie is that its kind of a low key remake of the 70s black exploration movie 'Blackula'. It pretty much has the same plot and follows the same story beats with the exception that it takes place in 1970s Harlem and the Vampire walks around wearing a old school Beliou Legosi Dracula cape (There's even a funny scene where a pimp compliments his outfit and asks where he can buy a cap like that. The vampire is annoyed but lets him live)

The whole thing with the monstrous from reminds me of the vampires in the original fright night. I felt that, as it's presented, that their human looking form we see them in most of the time is a disguise and the demonic form they turn into when they're in combat is their true form. Obviously, they can walk around looking like that all the time so they use their supernatural abilities to take a more human looking form, albeit a stunningly good looking one

I do believe a lot of people of color had to come to set with their hair done or do it themselves due to lack of skill professionals on black fashion and styling. I'm pretty sure that the reason that Max wanted to turn Rita was a bloodline thing. Think about it. If vampires are nobles, and Rita is the daughter of a vampire noble; then, it makes sense that Max wants to turn her into into a full vampire because then she is of his tribe, of his bloodline. If he goes a makes a bunch of brides then they are his offspring not a legitimate potential mate. So, it's like vampiric grooming. He wants a partner not a daughter.

It would be great to cover the vampires and werewolves from the TV show supernatural. They have a lot of lower. They’re very different from traditional vampires and werewolf, great universe to cover.

Man, I haven't seen this since it came out back in the 90s. I didn't remember any lore. Thanks for bringing it up and now i would be interested in knowing the lore and origins. These vamps sound different but curious how different if we got the whole back story.

Nice cover, but a few things you got wrong. That wasn't Rita mother in the coffee. That was her vampire entity. That wasn't a random cab driver that was trying to hit Rita. It was a set up between Max and Julius. Julius was the driver. The reason why he had to turn her before the next full moon. Is because she was at the right age and that was her deadline and the transformation had to be completed before then. He needed Rita to restart the vampire race. She was his promised mate through her father.

I don't believe Max actually dies in the movie. If you notice the scene where he retrieves his coffin, there is a blue flash and a spark/light that flies away. That is the same thing that happens at the end though this time you could tell it was a bat for a second. There is still the blue flash and the spark/light right after you see the bat. Its also the only thing that explains how his ring just magically fell onto the sunroof of the limo. He was repaying his debt for the help given.

When it came to the coffin scene with Rita, I interpret that that was supposed to be Rita's vampire form because Max needed her to accept her vampire half in order to become a full vampire and mate with him.
