The song, “Everything Stays,” applies pretty heavily to the series as a whole, too. Like most cartoons, the status quo always seems to be maintained. Same characters, same locations, same conflicts. But, everything changes. The characters continually evolve, their relationships develops. Marceline is one of the most richly complex characters in the series. Starting out as a puckish prankster with a dark edge, her connection to new and old friends gradually calms her wild side, making her more chill and supportive. She always maintains an independent streak, but despite her age, she doesn’t feel too alienated from mortals like Finn. And her arc with Bubblegum? My absolute favorite LGBT relationships in western animation.

Well, more than just that. It’s not just whether they pull the trigger, it’s how the relationship is expressed over time. KorrAsami only had a single scene of potential buildup, in the middle of season 4, and it was still pretty ambiguous. Bubbline was gradually explored over 8 seasons, with entire episodes revolving around their relationship. RWBY is kinda having similar issues. The writers want to do Blake x Yang, but there was so little ship baiting, that it feels abrupt and out of nowhere. Then again, RWBY isn’t exactly good at interpersonal relationships to begin with.

@@arellajardin8188 Korrasami was rushed, sure, and honestly the relationship felt almost shoe horned in slightly I remember earlier episodes teasing something and I wasn't unconvinced even then Having only been reading the manga adaptation, Yang and Blake haven't had much interaction so far (still in the first arc, I believe), so maybe it happens later. Major character developments have mostly been Ruby and Weiss tolerating each other and Ruby and Penny's friendship as of recent chapter

Wouldn’t the vampire king represent the emperor? Also, he mentions the world too. The emperor is represents father hood: authority and structure... something she didn’t really have, considering all of Marceline’s dads left her for the worse. Perhaps seeing the Ice King helped her resolve with that card? The world is the last card of the major arcana order, symbolizing completion and accomplishment, which we can say is the end of Marceline’s struggle and her resolution.

Soooooo gratifying to finally see such an in-depth reading of Stakes. It's such a psychologically rich story, and I can't think of another channel better suited to dive into it. Bravo, Maven. I would add that outside of the tarot connections, the vampires and how Marceline defeats them are symbolic of character flaws she's struggled with in the past; she's literally battling her own demons. The Fool is her impish, trickster side, which used to be her default setting but is something she's mostly grown out of, so he represents very little challenge. The Empress is her coldness and aloofness, which she can only overcome with the help of her friends (And motivated by her love for Simon). The Heirophant is her resistance to moving on from her past; he dies through his own unsustainability, but wounds her deeply in the process. The Moon is the animalism of her vampiric curse, which she is unable to fight at all and only escapes due to the invention of her friends. The King is her capacity for change and growth, which is something she initially resists and tries to kill, but ultimately accepts. And The dark cloud is the cruel recursion of fate, which she despairs at the sight of, but is finally able to overcome it even as she must also succumb to it.

I feel like Adventure TIme is one of the most profound shows of the past decade, especially when it comes to the Big themes about humanity and history. I've thought a lot over the past few years about how, sometimes it seems like we're making progress, but then we fall back into the same old traps. I always remember what Marceline said, about how we make the same mistakes over and over because no one lives long enough to see the patterns. But while history repeats itself... it doesn't really. No two situations are ever exactly the same; there are always different people and contexts. "Everything stays, but it still changes." Here and elsewhere, Adventure Time has a very Buddhist influence. This is most explicit at the end of... season 7? Where the comet offers Finn the chance to exit the cycle of reincarnation. Anyway, the point is that it's very interested inconcepts of cycles and incremental change, on the level of both individuals and humanity as a whole. I get the impression that it's coming from a point of view that we're on a path of growth and evolution (albeit a very slow one), both on the individual level and as a whole. Although that might just be me.

As someone who plays Persona, the Tarot is a wonderful thing. It isn’t so much about “telling your future”, as it is about figuring out yourself and how to proceed with your life. It is also good for character building. See Sojiro Sakura’s own Hierophant storyline.

Hierophant vampire reminds me of Vlad the Poker from What we do in the shadows. ("He never gets the faces right.") The scene where he was a cat in red boots and said "What gave me away? The boots?" had me in stitches for some reason. Also the songs and flashbacks reduced me into a sentimental sniveling mess. I love AT so much.

The thing about the Hyrophant's "traditional vampire ways" is they aren't quite like how HE perceives them. For some time, I've wondered why vampires couldn't enter a home without being invited. In most articles I've found, this is a thing because the human home is like a sacred place. Thus; demons are forbidden from entering...unless a human, for some reason, decides to let them in. A good example of how this works can be found in the film Let the Right One In (as well as the American remake, Let Me In.) There is a scene where, after the vampire girl (Abby) enters Owen's home without an invitation, her body starts convulsing and bleeding uncontrollably. If Owen didn't say to her "you can come in" while this was happening, she would've died

Long ago there may have been a specific point to them, but whether or not that's still something that's prevalent in the present is irrelevant. Watching that extremely dark scene in which we see how Maceline became a vampire, it seems to me that she is symbolic of a rape survivor. She may carry the memory of that horrific assault, with her for the rest of her life, but she's not going to let it break her. Instead, she overcame the emotional trauma (though as Maven said, she'll always have the scars), and brought predators like her attacker, to justice.

NiggardKikeing Hunter Yes! And in the final episode before they kissed, I didn’t notice this line when she hugs her until now. It says, “Even back when we weren’t together, I was so worried that something bad would happen to you, and I wouldn’t be there to protect you and... I don’t wanna lose you again.” It reminded me of this line from Carmilla season 3, “Even if the world burns, I won’t lose you again”. Marcy was basically saying the same thing to Bonnie the way Carm said it to Laura, and that’s not a coincidence to me.

Your review of what we do in the shadows was the very first I saw of that movie and sealed the deal for me a while back. But girl, you knocked this one out the park for me. It's so refreshing to see a review of stakes from a different angle, tarot cards weren't really used to analyze the mini series, because they would usually be more psychoanalytic. so Stakes is inspired by Jojos bizarre adventures Stardust Crusaders? Frighting a tarot card step by step until the defeat of the vampire final boss? This is the third saga of the Jojo manga series, and uses Dio Brando, the vampire villain from the first saga (Phantom Blood). I recomend the first tree sagas (especially one and tree) for an specific focus on the vampire for analisis (the later sagas use other kinds of villains and monsters)

Maven, i really do love these videos. I don’t know if you read the comments at all, but if you do, I’ve got a recommendation for you - The Extraordinary Adventures of the Athena Club trilogy, by Theodora Goss. There’s only two out now but the third one’s out in October. Unfortunately vampires don’t show up until the second book - or to be more precise ‘people who are infected with vampirism’ as they put it, but I think it’s worth the wait. Anyway the first book is named ‘The Strange Case of the Alchemist’s Daughter,’ and the second is called ‘European Travel for the Monstrous Gentlewoman’, if you’d care to check them out.

Hey! I can't deny that it seems discouraging to follow all ten seasons of Adventure Time. The first few seasons are also radically different in tone and substance than the later ones. However, if you can find them online (there are sites hosting them), I would recomend just watching through. Appreciate the first seasons for the light hearted, character introducing adventures they are and look forward to what it later morphs into. Not every episode is plot relevant, but I believe it will be much more enjoyable if you know all of the characters in depth. I am sure you can find a list of all the Marceline episodes and just watch it as her story, but I also think you might miss Finn's incredible arc or details about Ice King and Bonnie which are so important to her as well. Hope you will like it!
