Really cool arrangement! The violin alternating between that cool slide and plucking really made the song.

Folk songs have long branches and deep roots - today Vampire Weekend have become the sun from the sky granting Peggy-O new spring leaves by making it their own. I am looking forward to the day when a new generation inspired by this version is credited for "Covering The Vampire Weekend song Peggy-O" :)

While technically not a Grateful Dead song, it is my favorite tune the Dead would play in concert during their amazing 1977 run of shows. And Vampire Weekend is one of my favorite bands from today. So this is a real treat!
@jameshauer85542 ай бұрын
Ah, it was 1977. I remember being at Winterland in 1977, standing darn near at the stage and looking up at Jerry while this song brought me to tears. Thanks for reminding me what year it was.

True it's not their song but they've made this version populat...bob Dylan's is much different and the Irish folk song is also different

Me too! Peggy O during ‘77/78 shows still one of my favs.
@tuanjim7992 ай бұрын
The '77 ones are my fave, particularly May 19 in Atlanta, and September 3 in Englishtown, New Jersey. Nassau 1980 is a cool one, but a little bit faster and bouncier (influence of increased coke-intake I'm told lol).

Mmm nice cover. I don’t know if this song was originally Grateful Dead, I think it’s a traditional song. I heard it first from Simon & Garfunkel, Wednesday Morning 3AM
@kptasz182 ай бұрын
It’s a super old Scottish folk song. Many artists have covered it, but GD’s is probably the most well known.
@GioYoLOL2 ай бұрын
This is a cover of the Joan Baez version of that folk song which was also the version that inspired Jerry to cover it! Lots written about this song since like 1590?? Amazing what we passed down through oral tradition!

Isn’t it great that music is subjective?!
@tuanjim7992 ай бұрын
Ehh idk about all that. This is cool, but honestly I prefer the more beat-down, soulful, ramshackle way the Dead did it (especially in their '77 shows, but also the Nassau 1980 one is a fave).

not bad but very simplistic and just sort of okay. the national did a much better cover. also this sounds more like the Simon and Garfunkel version than the Dead's version, which is also kind of a shame.
