Okay: I think I know vaguely what this song is about. Simply put, it's about the kind of challenges we undergo when we transition to adulthood, and how they change us as a person. The first half of the song is about the speaker's past. He used to live in New York, soak up culture like a sponge (Disco tapes from LA/San Francisco), experiment with abstract ideas (Communist reader), and was relatively wealthy (with Champaign and disco... I was a hoarder). The rest of the song is about his life currently, which is defined by change, and his new perception of his own future, which is now a lot less experimental and a lot more domestic (I'm ready for the house). The speaker sees himself as tougher (the gloves are off, the wisdom teeth are out) for having grown up, but he had to give up freedom of expression and ideas in exchange for practicality to get to where he is now (wisdom's a gift but you trade it for youth). I think the many references to "stepping to my girl" are metaphors for life's challenges in general. When he says "you always step to me girl" he means "you always challenge me." And the subtext is that by challenging him constantly, life makes him a stronger person, but also forces him to conform. That's why "punks would laugh when they saw us together". They can see that he's been cowed. The speaker thinks the punks are not ready for the challenges of adulthood, so they "don't know how to dress for the weather." Conversely, when "ancestors say their girl was better... she was tougher than leather" he's referring to the way old people talk about the challenges in their life, and how it forced them to grow up, too. I could go on, but you get the idea. Why does this song make some people sad and some people nostalgic? Well, I would suggest that it's because the song is about growing up; an experience which is itself bittersweet. Why do listeners get "hipster" vibes, when listening to this song? Well, probably because it's sung from the perspective of a hipster from New York who's forced to grow up.

...wow. Great interpretation.
@xandrafuhrer3 жыл бұрын
Lovely interpretation. I always thought "stepped to my girl" was just proposal, from the perspective of proposer and from the father of the bride (haha) which I still think makes sense, considering the thematic significance of proposal with the rest of the album...turns out it's most likely an extended metaphor for music itself, "girl" and "the music the singer listens to" being totally interchangeable throughout the song. "Ancestors told me that their girl was better"--boomers always complaining about older music being better, all the new stuff is shit; "and maybe she's gone and I can't resurrect her / the truth is she doesn't need me to protect her"--defensiveness and protectiveness of the music you love. And then the central "step to my girl" is this elitist anger over your obscure, deeply based tastes in music becoming mainstream--again a kind of protectiveness over it...which ofc works back with the father-of-the-bride reading. Anyway, it obviously means all of these things and none of them, that's what's so great about lyricism this spectacular.

@MikeSaidHeep Sorry for the long reply. This might be the most popular opinion (or idk if ezra has said it) but I love it when the people in the comment section talk about their own interpretation about a particular song, movies, music videos etc. Rather than just believing what others has to say about the meaning of some arts, why not make our brain works a bit finding the meaning behind some weird lyrics. Because that's what a good fan does.

The first two Vampire Weekend albums came out while I was in college and my friends and I listened to them essentially everyday. I graduated in 2012, moved to New York, and then this album was released. I remember thinking how different it sounded from the first two albums and how it doesn't make me think of college, instead just makes me think of the city and living here. This song particularly was a beacon of this huge move/change/step in my life. This video took me by complete surprise.. and makes such beautiful, perfect sense that it's like someone knows my brain.

I heard this song last year around November before I went to this highschool football game to see this girl I've had a crush on since 6th grade (I'm in 8th now) but I never had the balls to talk to her but my friend told me that she thought I was cute So I thought I had a chance with her. While I was with her that night, this song played in my head and helped me say the sweetest things to her and she would make the most adorable smile ever. We got each other's number and texted for a while and I got her into Vampire Weekend which was awesome. But sadly, her and I stopped talking for no reason. Last thing I remember texting her was "Happy Thanksgiving" and that was it. Whenever I hear this song I automatically think of her and the cold weather of that night, people cheering for the football, drinking hot coffee while wearing pea coats with scarfs and hearing my friends cheering me on while I talked to her. Good memories Vampire Weekend brings but this song brings the most :')

I'm now 26, I just moved out of the bay area after living in Alameda for 3 years, with so many pleasant memories in San Francisco, Oakland, and Berkeley. I recently heard this song again as I was moving and it feels like this song was placed in my life by whatever higher power to foreshadow what the future had in store. I was struggling with depression back then and I'm so glad I got to this point in my life. I have everything I could ever want, truly blessed. I don't know what vampire weekend ment by these lyrics but they mean a lot to me now

I googled the meaning of this song and it was very interesting. The whole meaning or outcome of th song is about ezra's music. The ' girl ' is actually the music. " I'm stronger now I'm ready for the house " before when ezra's music was being criticized as terrible music he wasnt ready for that type of review you know. But now he's ready and he knows his music won't be liked by many peope but that doesn't bother him anymore. " when I see you in the world I see you step to my girl " here he's talking about how he sees fans of his music or those critics singing and dancing to his songs. I don't know what you guys think but you should definitely google it :)

[LYRIC] Every time I see you in the world You always step to my girl Back, back, way back, I used to front like Angkor Wat Mechanicsburg, Anchorage and Dar es Salaam While home in New York was champagne and disco Tapes from L.A. slash San Francisco But actually Oakland and not Alameda Your girl was in Berkeley with her Communist reader Mine was entombed within boombox and Walkman I was a hoarder, but girl, that was back then The gloves are off The wisdom teeth are out What you on about? I feel it in my bones I feel it in my bones I'm stronger now I'm ready for the house Such a modest mouse I can't do it alone I can't do it alone Every time I see you in the world You always step to my girl Ancestors told me that their girl was better She's richer than Croesus, she's tougher than leather I just ignored all the tales of her past life Stale conversation deserves but a bread knife And punks who would laugh when they saw us together Well, they didn't know how to dress for the weather I can still see them there, huddled on Astor Snow falling slow to the sound of the master The gloves are off The wisdom teeth are out What you on about? I feel it in my bones I feel it in my bones I'm stronger now I'm ready for the house Such a modest mouse I can't do it alone I can't do it alone Wisdom's a gift, but you'd trade it for youth Age is an honor, it's still not the truth We saw the stars when they hid from the world You cursed the sun when it stepped to your girl Maybe she's gone and I can't resurrect her The truth is she doesn't need me to protect her We know the true death, the true way of all flesh Everyone's dyin', but girl, you're not old yet Gloves are off The wisdom teeth are out What you on about? I feel it in my bones I feel it in my bones I'm stronger now I'm ready for the house Such a modest mouse I can't do it alone I can't do it alone Gloves are off The wisdom teeth are out What you on about? I feel it in my bones I feel it in my bones I'm stronger now I'm ready for the house Such a modest mouse I can't do it alone I can't do it alone Every time I see you in the world You always step to my girl

Waaaaaay ahead of it’s time. The searching for meaning… the breaking in every conceivable way of incorporating pre-existing rhythm like the millennial whoop. And absolutely lost in life, no attaching oneself to a grand narrative will change it.

It's about a girl from his last. No matter what happens she would always be his girl, step to his girl. He probably went out with her and things didn't work out but time has changed him but not his love for her. He's grown up, seen the world, dated other girls, but only she can step to his girl.

you have it exactly right, but i think ezra said that this song was about music? replace every "girl" with "music" and you'll understand haha!
@cacuriouson11 жыл бұрын
Trudy Faye I mean obviously Ezra had a specific meaning while writing the song, but songs mean different things for everyone. For me, the song is about dwelling on the past and needing to move on. I'm probably wrong, but that is how I emotionally connect with the song.

i just wanted to say.... as a film student, my dream was to incorporate the stylings of abstract documentaries like koyannisqatsi into a music video. the first time i saw this video, it blew my mind. it's so visually stunning and simple and captures the feel of the song and lyrics so perfectly. to this day, it's my favorite music video, and it isn't even technically a music video!

When I heard this song, with my higher ear 6 years ago, I knew there is something, something you only question during an awakening. As if with ‘wisdom teeth are out’ you understand, you know and have that awe and questioning mind combined, when it scares you but you persist. Vampire Weekend is genius, Ezra Koenig, the band in its totality, artists… and when you get genius who have portrayed their truth with metaphor, when you disentangle and deconstruct, when this message and idea reaches you, you can applaud. Because whether this creates sadness or happy feeling, or any in between, you are a recipient of someone else’s complex and genius view and experience translated in 5 minutes, transmitted via voice and words; you are ready! Ready to comprehend, or apply to your own state of consciousness, evolution and find it personal in the end! Sometime this kind of aliveness in arts is precursor for that true self awakening! This night is devoted to Vampire Weekend, and that complex relationship both vertical and horizontal, with I am. Thanks
