I don't see this song as an anti-religious at all. It's just about someone who has trouble understanding God's omnipresence and I think rather than a personal point of view, I think he's speaking from today's society's point of view and the way people are moving away from religion. And it's also questioning God, "How could you love these people? They don't love you." Such deep lyrics. I love it.

I think it's the same way with the other songs on the album about religion, like Unbelievers. I don't think it's really anti-religion but questioning kind of the opposite what this song is, like is being an unbeliever correct and how the world sees them.
@tylerrandolph443610 жыл бұрын
Opal Will Yeah, that's what I think. I'm always shocked when people get the idea that this album is bashing religion, I just tell them to listen again and really listen to the lyrics. Plus, Ezra said himself that it's not an atheist's anthem but rather what you said, just a questioning of religion and how people view it.

One of the names God used to be identified as, in more ancient texts, was Yaweh. Its pronunciation sounds similar to the higher pitched repetitions of 'Ya Hey' in this song. The band has disguised song titles before (Dianne Young meant 'Dying Young'). There's that along with 'Ut Deo' that is also repeated at the '?' portions of the song. This song becomes increasingly profound and emphatic the more I listen to it.

I used to think this song was anti-God/anti-religion but after actually listening and studying it I realized it is the opposite. Just like most people think Step is about being in a relationship that no else agrees with when really it is about loving music that is outdated or not conventional. Vampire Weekend makes very smart and profound music. Usually to get the meaning to a song you have to look deeper and in places you wouldn't of thought. Many people want the song to cater to their personal beliefs on religion but as an agnostic I really think it is about a confliction on loving their God. Many people quoted that Ezra isn't religious so this can't be a love of God but Ezra has quoted very clearly that to be happy we must respect all religions. Making an anti religion song goes against this philosophy. Also he is careful not to say Yahweh which Jewish people can't say because to them the word is very sacred so it shouldn't be uttered.

An athiest along side a devout jew both feeling the same emotion but understanding the words in their own way. Not trying to lecture, sorry. i just researched this song too...tried to rationalize it the same way you did, and then it clicked...its art.

Honestly I thought (And still do think) it is a song about the state of our world. More specifically the refugees, saying that are being kicked out of their home country but no one wants them. The broken machine is the broken governments these people live in and practically impossible to fix. They just live under fire by media and politics, they don't even get to have their name thrown out there. But the connection to god could be there, god is guiding these people to a new land, everyone living in the middle east.
@uuuuuuuguuuuuuuuuuuu11 жыл бұрын
Awesome. "But You let it go." I don't want to be so quick to draw conclusions about the intention of the artists (especially when the lyrics can be easily interpreted just the opposite of how they struck me), but that line is the central message of Christianity and I hope it encourages people. That He loves such wretched creatures is indeed a miracle, and to discover that truth is a life-changing experience. This is coming from a former atheist of 11 years. What a bold message to share- never thought it'd come from Vampire Weekend. Kick ass
@acp177811 жыл бұрын
The bible pretty much shows us he is an ego-maniacal god of war and tyranny who if not obeyed, claims he will send you into eternal torture. He rules via fear and intimidation as tyrants do. Yet he has managed to garner billions of followers on this world who give him tribute in the form of worship, prayer and sacrifice, ie: energy, and they all believe he is a merciful and loving god, when the facts say otherwise. Who else could pull off a stunt like this of such enormity but the Father of Lies himself? SATAN. Of course he would let it go because the more you will burn in hell for another transgression you present. Well that's just my take. Former Catholic now a Humanist. I read the bible and the koran and if you read them with an open mind you can pretty much come to the logical conclusion of who would rule people like this? Also logic and common sense are the enemy of the ruling elite who love keeping a shroud of darkness over the people they control. No wonder there is no peace in the middle east. Imagine there's no countries It isn't hard to do Nothing to kill or die for And no religion too Imagine all the people Living life in peace.. JOHN LENNON

I do believe that this song is about the observation of religious faith in modern day society, in particular the Jewish religion. Evidence of this is from the Tanakh in Exodus with where Vampire Weekend specifically takes out an exert from the story of Moses where he is talking to a burning bush, hence the "through the fire and through the flames", then when asking the bush who the bush won't even say its (your in the song) name "I am that I am" is a direct quote from the Tanahk. When asked further, the bush reveals to be referred to as Yaweh (our g-d), hence why "Ya-hey" is the term coined by Vampire Weekend. The group then writes about the lack of belief in god as groups of people "don't love you", but how Yaweh still manages to love everything. The 19th nervous breakdown bit references a song about a girl who can't appreciate life from the Rolling Stones. If Vampire Weekend is swoon or happy over this, then perhaps they are happy Israelis can get away from god and be absorbed in their lives and get away from god. I think its more a question of Judaic faith in society today through observation of society from Vampire Weekends perspective.

After analyzing the lyrics I highly doubt this is an anti-God song. The line that says "And Babylon don't love you but you love everything." Ut Deo, Ya Hey Ut Deo, Deo Through the fire and through the flames You won't even say your name Only "I am that I am" But who could ever live that way? (Ya Hey) Ut Deo, Ya Hey Ut Deo, Deo

I was inthralled, and slightly (in the beginning) jaded by this song. I looked up the writer to the lyrics. Apparently, the writer was raised Jewish, and the lyrics were a direct reflection of his struggle to continue believing in his Jewish faith. I have always found the song to be VERY deep, thought provoking, and intriguing. I myself have gone through many changes religiously, from first being a Christian, to then being Messianic, and now more agnostic. This song speaks to me, in my own struggles with faith.

I think the lyrics to this song are very Jewish in the intimate, personal, and questioning attitude that Judaism has towards God. It reminds me of the story told in ElI Weisel's Night of God being put on trial. It does seem like the singer isn't religious per se but a very strong sense of the sacred and reverence is here. Beautiful.

I Am that I Am (אֶהְיֶה אֲשֶׁר אֶהְיֶה, ehyeh ašer ehyeh [ehˈje aˈʃer ehˈje]) is the common English translation (JPS among others) of the response God used in the Hebrew Bible when Moses asked for his name (Exodus 3:14). It is one of the most famous verses in the Torah. Hayah means "existed" or "was" in Hebrew; "ehyeh" is the first person singular imperfect form and is usually translated in English Bibles as "I will be" (or "I shall be"), for example, at Exodus 3:14. Ehyeh asher ehyeh literally translates as "I Will Be What I Will Be", with attendant theological and mystical implications in Jewish tradition. However, in most English Bibles, in particular the King James Version, this phrase is rendered as I am that I am. Ehyeh-Asher-Ehyeh (often contracted in English as "I AM") is one of the Seven Names of God accorded special care by medieval Jewish tradition.[1] The phrase is also found in other world religious literature, used to describe the Supreme Being, generally referring back to its use in Exodus. The word Ehyeh is considered by many rabbinical scholars to be a first-person derivation of the Tetragrammaton, see for example Yahweh.

What a brilliant satire and conversation with the god of the OT and the dogmatic hold to that idea...its a baptism of sorts, a shaking and breaking of the bottles of Ya Hey. Both a celebration..."but I let it go" and a destruction.

Captain here: -Ut Deo, ya hey- is what they say in that chorus, Ut Deo it's from latin, it means God, wich also when you hear closely, they say Yah Hey- Yah eh- Wich is a clear reference to yahveh, another name of God, if you pay close attention the whole lyrics are about god, the way he acts, his hard work, and missuderstandings from society.

Song Meaning: Here is the Meaning of the song as Ezra Koenig Intended: (The person being addressed throughout the whole song is God)... [Oh, sweet thing]: reference to George Harrison’s ‘My Sweet Lord’. [Zion doesn't love you]: Zion: a place name used as a synonym for Jerusalem, refers to their unfaithfulness. [Babylon don't love you]: if even God’s own people don’t love him, his enemies, represented by “Babylon,†definitely don’t. [But you love everything]: talking about God's ability to love all people. [America don't love you, So I could never love you, In spite of everything]: a callback to a similar line in “Unbelievers†‘if I’m born again, I know that the world will disagree’. using America as an example as it is a heavily Christian nation. [In the dark of this place, There's the glow of your face]: a reference that God offers comfort in hard times. As “dark†as things get, He offers light. [There's the dust on the screen]: metaphor for the human body as a vessel that gathers dust and breaks. [Of this broken machine]: reference to the biblical story of Isaiah, who when standing in the light of God and His angels realized just how unclean he was. He thought himself unworthy to be in God’s presence. [And I can't help but feel, That I've made some mistake, But I let it go]: as everyone knows that deep down they are "sinners" but they don't really care. [Ya hey]: reference to "Yahweh" (meaning God) but as the Lord's personal name can't be used in vain they decided not to say it all together, hence 'Ya hey' ((The 3rd section is a reference to Exodus 3. Where God has seen the suffering of his children in Egypt and has come to rescue them through sending Moses to bring them out of Egypt and into the promise land)) [Through the fire and through the flames]: reference to Exodus 3:2 where God calls to Moses from within a bush on fire. [ut Deo]: meaning 'as God' in Latin [You won't even say your name]: In Exodus 3:13,14 Moses said to God “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what shall I tell them?†[Only "I am that I am"]: God said to Moses, “I am who I am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I am has sent me to you." [But who could ever live that way?]: ‘as when non-believers were confronted with such global indifference and outright aggression, they would ask 'why you would not announce your existence with absolute certainty?'’ (Anyone who’s lost faith in religion will have posed this question ) [Oh, the motherland don't love you, The fatherland don't love you]: a reference to how Jerusalem, the birthplace of all 3 major world religions is an area of constant conflict even though it is the mother of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Therefore this violence would suggest that they don’t love God because of the constant conflict in the birthplace He created. [The faithless they don't love you, The zealous hearts don't love you]: faithless (meaning atheists), zealous hearts (people having eagerness and ardent interest in pursuit of something "may be a reference to scientists"). [All the cameras and files]: a man of faith said hidden eyes could see what I was thinking'. [All the paranoid styles]: Like The Paranoid Style in American Politics, Richard Hofstadter’s seminal work in historical theory from 1964. [All the tension and fear, Of a secret career]: reference to Moses trying to get out of his God given vocation, or to G-d refusing to reveal himself as divine when He is present in the world. [And I can't help but feel, That you see the mistakes, But you let it go]: as God knows all our sins but chose to forgive us despite all odds. [Outside the tents]: it's meant to allude to the fact that Moses and his followers lived in tents. [on the festival grounds]: the festival of Sukkot (read about it here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/…) re-stages the event every year. [spinning "Israelites"]: spinning (meaning a chain of mental associations (from the suffering of the oppressed to the suffering of the upper middle class). Israelites (meaning son of Israel) [19th Nervous Breakdown]: reference to a Rolling Stones song of the same name, which is about male exasperation with unhappy, spoiled women.

wheel That still doesn't answer how he got all *that* from just the comments on this website. I know that many of the Jewish references do make sense, tho it's impossible to determine if that's what Ezra actually intended. Certainly believable, however. Some stuff is very perplexing like "[spinning "Israelites"]: spinning (meaning a chain of mental associations (from the suffering of the oppressed to the suffering of the upper middle class). Israelites (meaning son of Israel)" Huh? How'd he get from a to b in 30 seconds? The Sukkot reference seems right, however, as does much of his other commentary & explanation, tho that's just a gut feeling, combined with my own very traditional Jewish upbringing. The "Ya hey" thing as a ref to Yaweh is fairly ingenious, especially given the traditional Jewish propensity to avoid saying the actual name of G-d (unless engaged in actual pray or sacred scriptural studies.)
