Stealing an idea from The Babe Cave, here's a cheap wall texture technique AND bug screens for your van doors that cost a FRACTION of custom-made options and WITHOUT any hardware.
Van Bug Screens: amzn.to/2t18oUT
Wall Medallions/Stencils
Buy the stencils here: victorialarsen...
Lightweight Joint Compound for FULL room: amzn.to/2Ttx83Q
Joint Compound for SMALL area: amzn.to/2GiioB8
Putty Knife: amzn.to/2MKUpeU
**You will need two surfaces to scrape the compound off the stencil after each application. One for one side, one for the other.
**You may be able to find these materials at your hardware store, but not the stencils.

We loved those screens when we had a house. They would fade in color and still stand tall. When we moved out we had to rip that shit off because my husband stapled it down one time there was a storm with strong winds 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

Wow - really like the medallion technique. I have a 100 year old home as well and I used the sponge painting technique to hide the plaster and lath imperfections. Screens - I don't know how people live with out them. Here in the midwest a horde of mosquitoes would drain our blood and carry off our bodies for the meat if we didn't have screens. And most of us have learned the hard way that cheap paint is more expensive than expensive paint! Looking good!

Preach on it! After about April you can't go outside here without buy spray. the bugs are unmanageable. Without screens you'd be miserable. The screens are not pretty, they will not make any Instagram famous photos but I WILL sleep better at night

Casey, you are so right about insects here in the South. I don't know about the size of them and North Carolina but in Texas you can put a saddle on the water bugs and ride the damn things as they crawl out of the plumbing and mosquitoes are the size of B-52 bombers. You can practically see the dadgum things carry off grown men into the sunset.

I like the plywood with a design on it . I worked at Sears & Roebuck’s in the late 70s . Those critters were in the warehouse. Once after a Christmas party 🎉 🥃🥃 and smoking a roll your own cigarette . There was a cloths dryer moving on it’s own. Being loaded onto a truck . Another time another place. Them suckers were big . If you had not stomped on them hard they would keep crawling away or towards you.

They're horrifying. The Asian roach (yes they come in hundreds of shapes and sizes) is the largest by far. I have stood over them unleashing a hydrant of poison as it puddles on the floor around them and they still get up and walk away.

Found them on sale for $5.99 so I bought 4 of them because they do unravel over time. I’m putting fray no more or fray check on the edges the next time before I put it up. BTW I use masking tape to hem my pants and skirts.😂🤣😂

It was so funny to watch. They finally went for it and got in quick but still had a lot get in.

I just love the way the van is coming along I'm seeing your vision. Romantic vintage look. So I'm also seeing the AC & I want to know what kind is it? How difficult was it to install or was it hard at all. In the future during the summer I'd like to know how you power it & as I suspect is it one if the best decisions you made. I live in TX we can stay in the triple digits for weeks at a time so when you got that AC I thought it was genius. I'm super excited about the AC I think it's going to be a game changer for van life. I'm currently saving for a van single 49 my son is 27 so I think it sounds like heaven. But the AC is almost mandatory because I don't function well without good sleep. Your pretty pink babe cave is pretty inspirational. Anyhow thank you I love the way it's coming along.

I got so much flack on here for getting an air conditioning unit but people just dont understand until they've lived in the South!! I bought a Coleman Mach 3 Power saver on Amazon so it would be delivered to me: amzn.to/2BjcOv3. The SOLE reason I chose this model is because it has a *running* wattage of about 1000 watts which means I don't need a huge generator to run it. I bought a Honda EU2200 inverter generator to power it: amzn.to/2t3CB5G. Its more than I wanted to pay but has fantastic reviews and is the only generator I know of you can bring to the "store" (Honda) to get fixed by the manufacturer in just about any city. I also like the Mach 3 because it has a heat strip you can add. I can send you all the parts I used if you end up buying it Nova. I had it professionally installed. Cutting the roof was not the hard part. The electric I was lost on.

Palmetto bugs; as we call them!! hahaha A funny story about plaster walls. My grandparents house that is in Mt Pleasant, Sc, was built in1956. Apparently, the were still doing plaster walls. moving forward to the late 80’s and my grandfather had to have the cable company come over. Well, the good ole cable guy tells my grandfather; that he needs to drill to run a new cable; in the back bedroom. I am down the hall and hear my grandfather tell mr cable guy; that those walls are plaster and he needs a special drill bit and needs to be very careful. lol Well, good ole cable guy says, I got this!! I know what to do. 10 minutes goes by and I hear drilling and then a big crash and plaster raining off the wall hahaha yeah, that happened lol My grandfather just shook his head and walked out of the room lol meanwhile, my brother and I are laughing so hard; we were crying lol

My only comment is on the Velcro tape. It's a problem I have and have yet to beat permanently. Heat, I'm talking egg fry on sidewalk heat in a closed up van finds the Velcro melted off the window, wall, ceiling wherever and on the floor, bed, on top of me if I happen to be in the swelter. I've done the extra glue on the Velcro too and it lasts longer. Other than drilling holes to hold Velcro in place with screws, be prepared to swear. If you find a magic potion, do tell.

If you sell a home and DONT re purchase another, is that good or bad for your pocketbook? I'm considering the sell of mine and getting a promaster.
@CaseyRoman
@CaseyRoman 5 жыл бұрын
That depends on A LOT. If you sell under two years (like I did) you get slapped with capital gains tax. My house was too much for one person to manage at 110 years old. If you have a newer construction home you might consider renting it out while you are away in your van, that way you always have somewhere to park. Or you can AirBnB it if you are in a touristy area. Just remember the moment you let go of your property you are also letting go of somewhere to park it and somewhere to take breaks when you get tired of the van.

Since vehicles vibrate and flex i am wondering if your plaster artwork will crack and fall off over time. When i build yachts we know not to use tile. Quite often it will pop off. Please do a follow up after a few months to let us know how things hold up. P.s. Next time countersink your screw heads a smidgen and mud over.
@CaseyRoman
@CaseyRoman 5 жыл бұрын
I expect it to crack. I hope it does, then it will look more like an old house. A house that has plaster walls and no cracks is a phony! The solid plywood is beneath is it doesn't matter if it cracks. Since I sold all of my tools after doing my house renovation I have pretty weak gear, hence the reason why the countersinks are not done well.

Awesome mud Job! Fancy Spancy! You go gurl! Stink & Lady Bugs are the biggest pest bugs here in Central VA....Both make a mess when squished, the lady bugs bleed their colors, and Stain whatever they are squished on! The stink bugs have a double dose of STINKING Arsed Guts! I hate both of the Biotches! I once (unknowingly of course) wiped my mouth with a napkin that had a lady bug on it, "Orange" Lips & Mouth was the result! Great Job Lady, your Van will be one of a Kind! BTW...hows your fridge working? I have a 14Ltr. on the way, that will be for when I am traveling and to just keep water and sodas in. I am getting very excited about My Journey, I know it will suck sometimes...but heck doesn't life sometimes suck when living in "Sticks and Bricks"?

With your taste in decor if my mother (an interior decorator specializing in early American and Victorian) were still around and I showed her this video, I can totally hear saying, "Why couldn't you bring a girl like that home instead of some of those other floozies" 😄

ahahahhah!!! Well, I may be a profanity-flinging tiny overlord but put my in a big Victorian home with my camera and its a different person. I find it nothing short of remarkable that those homes were built WITHOUT power tools and the painstaking attention to detail they put into every cut. The last one I got to explore right after interior demo I saw where a worker had cared 1910 into the wall. I only wish he had known in 1910 that in 2018 someone would be marveling at the moment he marked in history thinking he was a total badass!

@@CaseyRoman I can appreciate and actually like the exterior design of some Victorian homes, particularly when it comes to their trademark towers and turrets. But when it comes to Interior furnishings and style then the dude and me takes over and if there's a choice between the two, early American and Victorian, I go for the early American. Our house with mostly decked out in Victorian except for the family room and my room. But when I was in high school and would bring a girl by the house they would absolutely love it and mother would absolutely love giving them a tour. One girl saying was like a giant dollhouse. Fortunately, while all my friends knew what our house was like, I never heard it spread around that "Michael lives in a dollhouse". I don't think my boy-pride back then could have handled the embarrassment. 😄

Wow...i never knew how they did that on the old houses...it's beautiful!!! Not so much the mosquito door though...yuck. There is a better way. Go to a JoAnn's Fabrics...go to the table where they cut materials and the lady there will be able to suggest the type of netting material that would be good for your situation..i.e. uninvited visitors with wings and ankles. LOL....then ask her what she would do if she wanted to put it up in a van doorway without sewing..they have so many ideas..I depend on them from time to time for suggestions because I sew a bit. Have fun with your finishing touches, and don't be so hard on yourself, you will get it done and then will look at it with pride and joy!!!
