You’re right. There’s no way David could move like that and sing live. He could move and sing live, but he goes a bit over the top when he’s lip syncing on television. He knows millions are watching. He’s very charismatic and talented so a lot people want to see him…period! The band had all the elements you needed back then to be successful.

I love that you keep learning about the gear and techniques. Phasing and Flanging are very easy to confuse since they both can add a cycling movement to the sound. Here's a breakdown of the difference between Phase and Flange: Phasing is a sweeping filter, kind of like twisting a "tone" knob on a receiver back and forth. At a slow speed it tends to make things sound liquid or chewy and at higher speeds can add warble and tremolo. Phase has a close cousin called a Vibe. It uses a photocell to get a similar chewy sweep to a phaser. Hendrix famously used a Univibe live (Woodstock and Maui) and often used tape flanging in the studio. The end of Jimi's "Bold As Love" goes off to flange nirvana. Flanging is based on a very short delay. It was originally done by dragging a finger on the multitrack tape. Modern flanging is usually a digital effect and is known for a whooshing wind or metallic like sweep effect on the sound like you just heard in the beginning of "the Cradle Will Rock" Chorus is related to Flange and is also delay based, but is less of a "whoosh" sound and more about shimmer and dimension. Alex Lifeson was known to use chorus on a ton of his guitar parts.

YOU WERE ALMOST RIGHT!!!! It's a flanger effected Wurlitzer electric piano played thru Eddies 1960's model 100 watt Marshall Plexi amplifier. Eddie as a kid was a classically trained pianist and right up til his death he couldn't read music. AMAZING!!! Not because he was illiterate or anything like that because he was a genius musically...period. As a matter of fact he would just watch his piano teacher and play how he played. After awhile the teacher caught on but yeah just an amazing musician. To me the best guitar player EVER. you were asking who did Eddie look up to in a previous video and I've been a fan for 40 years and read and heard COUNTLESS radio interviews etc and only 2 he would talk about...Eric Clapton during the Cream days and 1 ya prob never heard of..Allan Holdsworth....that's it... I heard you say you love the "Brown Sound" well if you do to get to the Hagar years Eddie went more towards the piano just electrified....synth!!! to me you won't hear the brown sound in the Hagar years at all...still great but I'm a Roth era guy all the way. As a matter of fact they made an album with Roth in 2011 or 2012 called "A Different Kind of Truth and the Brown sound is back!!!!!!!! don't worry you don't have to rush to the Hagar era lol jk!!!!!! the 1st 2 albums with Hagar Alex is playing almost exclusively electronic drums....c'mon man I want Alex to play that jungle drum beat sound not electronic drums..oh well. just one mans opinion. Also VH 'S sound and songs are so classic in so many ways (Roth era) because of Michael Anthony's harmonizing and backing vocals....there is no classic VH w/o Mikey...went to see them reunite w Dave in 2007 twice and Wolgang was ok but Mikey's backing vocals were sorely missed although Dave was really on his game vocally in 2007-2008....

I got to see them front row in 1981, then again in ‘82 and ‘83, when I was 16, 17, & 18 respectively. They were great. Exciting. Passed a bottle of Jack Black to Roth; he drank & passed it back. Only time after that was the famous free show they did in Dallas Alley with Sammy Hagar. He’s not David Lee Roth. It’s not his fault. What else can I say?

Intro and main riff is Ed playing a Wurlitzer electric piano with a flanger pedal. Also, the Brown sound was originally the phrase Ed and Al coined to describe Al's signature snare tone. They also said it sounded like hitting a block of wood, hence "brown" sound. Now get on into the combo of Tora!Tora!/Loss Of Control from this classic album. Ed and Al at their most frenetic. As a drummer whose favorite player has been Al my whole life, LOC is Alex at his very best. As a lifelong fanatic, of course I liked the Hagar era, but nothing topped the original band. They were untouchable with Dave 1978-84.

Everybody always wants to comparing Dave and Sammy. I always say that dave was perfect during the classic rock era, which was the 70's and 80's. Dave was rare and out of control. When Sammy joined the band, classic rock was in the decline and the pop rock era was beginning. Sammy was polished and knew how to get all of Eddie's talents out. Van halen music transformed the late 80's and 90's with Eddie showing all the different instruments that he was able to play. Sammy was perfect for Eddie. It's hard to find four albums, in a row that are better than 5150, 0U812, For unlawful carnal knowledge, and Balance. All Sammy albums and they all show off Eddie's talents to the max. RIP Eddie.

This is for anyone new who may want to take the NF journey as we call it because he intertwines his music like marvel movies. All four albums is like a connected series. For instance in his when i grow up song, paid my dues, leave me alone, and why song, the black smile is the fake smile that he mentions in therapy session song. He hides eggs in his videos. In when i grow up song there was two hidden eggs in that song. A black balloon by the trash cans and in burger joint he grabbed at receipt that had the date and time of when his song time was being released. He had outcast name tag on in the janitor part from his Outcast song. Another example is in the search song he had cage in background he rapped in from his outcast song. Here is the song order: Mansion Album: All I have (video) Intro (video) Mansion- connects to intro 3. Fear moved in. Wake Up (video) Paralyzed Notepad (video) Therapy Session Album: Intro 2 (video) Therapy Session (video) Very important song. I just wanna know (video) How could you leave us-(video) have tissues nearby. Real song- (video) he pays homage to lil wayne in this song feed me rappers or feed me beats) Grindin ft Marty (video) Oh Lord- this song gets referred to in returns two albums later. Great song Statement (he pays homage to eminem and drake in this song) Warm Up -single (hype song) (video) Epiphany- collab with futuristic. Video. Pays homage to meek mill. Green lights (video) pay attention to what he has written on the notepad at the end. Perception Album: Outro (video) pay attention to the video. It is like marvel endgame how he connects tons of previous videos in this. Intro 3 (one of his best songs) Outcast (video) Know- pays homage to eminem and 21 pilots Destiny One hundred Let you down (video) watch to the very end! If you want love (video) Remember this- 💎 Gems all over this track Single: No Name. (Video) This gets connected in leave me alone song an album later. Single: Why- (video) NF pays big homage to Big Sean as he uses his flow from bounce back in this and mentions Big Seans name and his album I decided. (This isnt nates flow he says) Also he has a ton of eggs like Dont mess with real music written on walls. Pay attention to all the writing. Additionally, Big Sean paid homage back in harder than my demons song he had the black balloons in it among other things Search Album: Whole album should be listened to but you can choose which you would like to do: The search (video) When I grow up (video) Leave me alone (video) Change My stress Nate Time (video) Returns- (hype song) one of his best for flow switches and word play Only Let me go Interlude then I hate myself song I miss the days No excuses (hype song) Like this Options (hype song) Thinking Trauma singing only song. Amazing Paid My Dues (video) It was to the awful article rolling stones put out because the writer was a big chance the rapper fan and was pissed NF took number one spot. Over 400 people bashed that writer in the comments lol Chasing -demo he did with a fan. Clouds the Mixtape- Clouds (video) Lost ft Hopsin (video) Story (video) That’s a Joke (pays homage to J Cole) Just like you Prideful Layers Drifting Trust ft Tech N9ne Also there is many good songs not on this list like Dreams, you’re special ect if you like him then take the time and go back through and listen through them all at some point. His lost in the moment song was just used for the promo for the new show called the equalizer starring Queen Latifah.

You KNOW what I come for on Monday! Even though the Dave-era can't be matched, there is a lot of great Sammy stuff! You just need to listen in a different context. Sammy is a more serious songwriter and has a different performing style. Don't look at it as being "forced" to get into the Van-Hagar tunes, but rather evolving with who they were in this era.
