Honestly, first time. I'm 58 and 99% of the time, its been Dave's or Sammy's voice from Van Halen on the radio, doing the interviews. As I've grown older, my taste in music has expanded and by the time internet happened and we had access to videos, etc., I moved on to other genres. I still enjoy learning new things about the bands that I loved as a teenager. Just yesterday, I put on some old rock that I had previously recorded, D.O.A from VH II. Love that song.

@Rich Krikorian Eddie had a really bad cocaine addiction for many years, but believe it or not, learned a lot about investing from his wife Valerie. David Lee Roth blew through money really bad for many years, but managed to get his shit together. Michael Anthony stayed out of the tabloids but has mismanaged his money a bit. Alex has done the best at staying out of the tabloids and most likely has kept his shit together more than the rest of them. If Alex hadn't have gotten Divorced in 1996, he would be the wealthiest person in Van Halen. & What a kickass drummer. He's never truly received the credit that he's deserved for his drum playing. I believe he's probably the coolest one in Van Halen. But because Eddie the Great is so freaking awesome, Most people over look the talent of Alex's drum playing.

His vocal capabilities also carried what Roth COULD NOT DO … which was quite a lot on the higher register… see Loss of Control live video, for a great example. Michael’s live bass solo was awesome! Whether or not Eddie made it up and taught it to Michael, (which I think was complete B.S.) he still had to play it in front of sold out crowds which he did very well. Mike was a badass bass player live and the original Van Halen wouldn’t have been the same without his presence on stage, or on recordings.

Sammy is a great singer and didn't need Van Halen, but Van Halen needed David Lee as goofy as the guy Is, the band just wasn't the same without him. I'm glad I got to see them during the 1984 tour and I seen them again in 1995 with Our Lady Peace and Skid Row. But David Lee will always be the face of Van Halen to me.

Saw Van Halen in Phoenix around 2015. Dave was back with the band, but it was more a sad echo of a short-haired Dave. They built what looked like a four-by-four parquet floor box for him to slide around on. He didn't venture far from it. Mess up the lyrics of many of the songs - which baffled the crowd that was singing along. Still a decent show. Rock til you drop.

Gotta set the record straight here: Alex's black Dodge p/u at 6:17 is wrongly called a "cab over engine" or COE for short. That would be more accurately used to describe Eddie's Dodge from earlier in this vid for obvious reasons. Look at the body or face of the cab from a side-profile and the term basically explains itself....

Sam said greatest hits albums are for old performers that aren't really relevant , like Sammy is now . He can't even sell the equivalent of gold album sales . There's so much this got wrong! Eddie did not live in Santa Monica, he lived his entire adult life in Pasadena CA where the 5150 studio is. He also never lived in Studio City. It's true Michael Anthony does live in Newport California but the picture they show in this clip is at his house in Glendora CA that he sold 15 years ago. I can't begin to tell you how much of the rest of this that they totally got wrong, these people aren't fans they didn't even research this very well.

Ummmm. NO!! If you actually did your research on google!! Their house growing up was in Pasadena CA! Went to the High school there. Ed's 5150 studio and last residence to my knowledge is on canyon road! I did the trek to all places! This was when the building of the memorial park under construction at the time. With the EVH stage now done! And the complex they played when they were young that has a plaque on the side of it commerating it. Have pics! The garage is still there However there is a privacy fence around it in the alley! And went to the liquor store just around the corner where they bought their liquor. Where they carved Van Halen in the fresh concrete by the curb at the time! A pilgrimage? I felt Ed's prencense at each place! And I'm so not a religious person!!

I have a 69 Fender Precision w/Jazz Neck at the time custom color, Ocean Turqoise, block inlay on rosewood neck/bought at the music store I worked for in 1969. 2024 and Fender Custom Shop says "Sorry we won't touch it because you don't have a receipt"; although I do have owners manual with assembler name of "E Paxton", only Custom Shop in Colorado is HB Woodsong, Boulder. I lived in Norwalk California in the 60’s until 1987. I saw Van Halen play a battle of the bands in Norwalk in 1974. The band sounded great. But Roth’s voice not so good. 2 years later. Kiss bass player Gene Simons signed the band. And Roth’s voice got much better.

When Hagar joined, they expanded and grew musically. I will never understand why people seem to think having a complete idiot as their singer made them better. I enjoyed the sound of their music the first several albums, but they weren't the Beatles. When Sammy joined, the music became so much more thorough, and not just another "Metal Hair Band" of the 80's. Plus, I literally remember thinking, "Oh Good, that a-hole is gone, now I can actually like this band." I will say, learning fairly recently that Roth directed those 2 videos, Panama & Jump, gave me a new respect for him (they were 2 of the better videos made in early 80's), but the guy was a pure loser as a human being. Sammy...well, that dude seems like he has integrity. What a great band they became, grew tremendously in their musical ability, and yet all anyone seems to say is how bad they were after Roth. To each his own, I suppose.
