The brothers' dad was a jazz musician and you can really hear the swing in their early music. You really, really, really have to check out "I'm the One." - Because nobody, I mean nobody, in 1978, right in the middle of one of the most smoldering hyper boogies anybody has heard before or since, stops for some four-part barbershop a capella "bop bada-shooby-do-wah." Nobody that is, except the Mighty Van Halen.

'CATHEDRAL' is a song where it sounds like an organ (It's Eddie on his guitar, using 'volume(knob)'swells' and tapping, very impressive technique(s) that get overlooked ) .. in 'Little Guitars' Eddie plays a flamenco style, (On 'Jump', 'Right Now', 'Love Walks In' Eddie plays the keyboard and piano) 'Intruder'/'Oh Pretty Woman' is a must hear, (on 'Unchained' there's a part that was unplanned, when bassist Michael Anthony walked into the studio while DLR was laying down the vocals,(David riffs, and they left it in the song/"..One break, coming up!") unbelievable. 'I'll Wait' is one of my fave VH songs (probably underrated) ironically it features the bass and drums more(than Eddie's guitar) but the hook and turn around are 'so' damn satisfying.

The "leg kick" you're referring to is called the "duck walk". Angus Young does it really well. It's origins however, fall on Chuck Berry. According to Chuck,he first did it when he arrived at a show only to find the pants for his suit were wrinkled on one leg and had no time to press them. So he basically did what he could onstage to hide the wrinkles. And thus it became known as the "duck walk".

My all time favorite band after seeing the VHII tour in 1979 when this song first came out. Diamond Dave loves Motown so every song from his era has a great groove and incredible harmony vocals. Dave was the first to do the splits off the drum riser but I believe Chuck Berry is the first to do the leg sticking out thing that you thought Angus from AC/DC did. Van Halen with Diamond Dave at the helm is the only rock band in the US to have two Diamond certified releases, VHI and 1984. If you listen to all 6 of their albums with Diamond Dave you'll see that that they are the most diverse mainstream rock band ever. They covered it all. Rock, blues, jazz, heavy metal, bluegrass, etc. I would love if you did a reaction to every one of their songs but you have done enough. Thank you so much! But I would like to turn you on to some forgotten classics of yesteryear. Stuff my dad turned me on to. These songs were #1 songs in their day. Show's you how have times have changed. I read in a Tori Amos FB group yesterday that Eddie was a big Tori fan. One woman sat next to him & his wife at a Tori concert and she said they knew all the songs. Another person posted an article where he gave Tori a shout-out. They both had classical training on the piano, so I think he appreciated how she used that training as he did, making modern rock music. So, with that being said, please consider giving Tori a listen soon. She's a musical genius. Look for Sugar live - it rocks. The recorded version is a slow ballad, but it really blossomed with the band.

Its amazing any of us from back then are still around to tell the tale. Eddie's spirit still lives in all of us that took that journey. You my friend would have fit in perfectly. The leg kick thing you mentioned was called " the Duck walk" and it was originated by Chuck Berry in the 1950s. Angus Young loved 50s music, so there ya go. Great reaction!!! Peace brother!!!! I don't recall if you ever reacted to the video of Dance the night away (the video) by Van Halen, but its a live performance from 1979. The 1979 Van Halen world tour will go down in infamy as one of the wildest tours ever to date. kzbin.info/www/bejne/op3Jm3eLd5tpkJY

Eddie Van Halen was not only rock's greatest soloist, but one of the best damn rhythm guitarists ever. His rhythm playing on songs like this does not get NEARLY enough love, by a DAMN sight. I mean, tell me this ain't a groove!

AC/DC. Pantera, and these guys... brothers, one guitar, (or both) one on drums, amazing grooves that fit together. Great, fun to listen to their tapes in my car in the 80s...

Never personally a huge fan of Sammy Hagar’s version of the band. But David Lee’s led version I enjoyed immensely. This tune really loved.

You nailed it. Van Halen had a sense of humour about themselves. They were part vaudeville, part jazz, part blues but all Van Halen. No other band like them. They were the REAL DEAL. All those other "80s bands" were imitating them style-wise, but without the heart and without the musical soul.

What makes this song is the 6/8 shuffle rhythm while Al is putting some jazz fusion into it. I wanna say that Ed is more' playing a 'hopping' or 'galloping' 4/4 pattern. Just part of the magic that those two had playing together.

I was going to say the same Chuck Berry with the leg out, the guitar with a jump would be Pete Townshend. Unless someone can come up with someone earlier.

This was the first Van Halen record I ever bought. It was a 45. I can still remember talking to my best friend in the seventh grade on the phone and we both said did you listen to the other side, that song is just as good. It was D.O.A. I'm still a fan and a guitar player and still friends. Life changing moment for me
