I Carl Browning "WAS" there that day in Dallas Texas. 🇺🇸✌🏻❤🎶🎸👊🏻🇨🇱 Thank You, Eddie Van Halen, for decades of great Rock & Roll❗ I was 20 years old in 1991 right in the heart of Dallas Texas my HOME town. The show only lasted give or take an hour and the show was shut down by the cops. I waited ALL day to see this concert. I WAS front row but could NOT handle being pushed against the barricades. If you watch the crowd there was a guy on the light pole. Well, he fell off, being drunk crashing down on his head, not a good thing. It took the ambulance a while to part the crowd just to get to him. Man, sometimes I miss being 20, not a care, my long hair, and having fun like that‼️ 🤙🏻 The last song brings happy tears to my eyes.

31 years ago, I was there and started off being near the front row. I skipped work and went from Arlington to Dallas that morning and waited ALL DAY for this show. What was cool is Sammy actually played his guitar. Then under an hour and half the Dallas Police Department shut'em down. Before that take note of how the crowd was surging forward, I ended going back by the sound scaffolding to keep from being crushed. Then after that drunk on the light pole fell off on to his head. The show done!!! The ambulance had to part the street like the Red Sea. Ethier way, it was something I WON'T forget. Eddie will be missed, though his musicianship will live on! TEXAS STYLE 🤙🏻🎶 🎤 🎸 🎹 🥁

When it comes to rock, they were old dudes in '91. Led Zeppelin reached greatness when they were 20, sold out every show for 11 years, sold over 300 million records, and moved on to solo projects before they were 30. Van Halen wanted to be like Led Zeppelin but they weren't good enough. Eddie claimed he was better than Jimmy Page but he wasn't good enough and his sound wasn't heavy enough. VH couldn't sell half as many records or attract audiences half as big.

Hagar turned into an asshole. He violated the two most important tules of rock: 1. NEVER say a bad thing about a former band mate (especially a band mate that made you rich beyond your wildest dreams). 2. NEVER disrespect your fans, their city, and their brewery. In 2007, a very drunk and obnoxious Hagar amd MA got booed off the stage at the Fox in St. Louis after Hagar's chilish rant about Anhueser Busch decided against brewing his beer idea. When he made fun of AB employees in the audience, we had enough. Hagar deserved an ass-kicking which he later recognized and issued a hollow apology.

While listening to Q102 one sunny day in 1991, I learned about the free Van Halen concert in the West End. Next thing I know, my sister and I are in the crowd enjoying the music. We were literally almost crushed alive by the force of the crowd. No regrets though, it was an amazing day. Thank you for an amazing day Eddie, I will never forget that wonderful day. RIP

People act like Sammy Hagar ruined Van Halen. No, Sammy saved VH. David Lee Roth was gone out the door and Eddie didn't want him back, at least not for many years to come. And stop fantasizing about who could have been a better replacement for DLR, because Eddie didn't want them either. He wanted Patty Smyth from Scandal, who's hits included Good Bye To You and The Warrior, but Patty Smyth declined the position. And Sammy didn't insist on adding keyboards and synths to the band's sound. That's what Eddie wanted to do, because his first instrument was piano. Eddie wanted to push the band towards a Synth-pop sound, not Sammy. That was partially the cause of the friction between DLR and EVH. So, think about it logically. Eddie wanted synth, keyboard and Patty Smyth. That band was going to completely change it's sound, with or without Sammy Hagar. If anything, Sammy saved the band and gave it at least some Hard Rock credibility. With Sammy, they moved away from Hard Rock and became a Pop-Metal band. Well, guess what? At the time, that was exactly what you wanted, if you were going to make 4 straight number one albums. It's very unrealistic to compare Van Hagar to Van Halen, because the old band and the old sound were simply not options anymore. Stop blaming Sammy for changing the sound of Van Halen. Eddie initiated and orchestrated that change. Sammy came in and he did exactly what Eddie wanted him to do. He rocked out and he made hit records. Unless, you truly believe in your heart, that Van Halen would have sounded better, fronted by Patty Smyth, then stop complaining about Sammy. Just be thankful that Sammy helped VH make four straight number one albums. I can almost guarantee, the Van Patty era albums would have performed much worse on the charts and they would have pissed off a lot more Van Halen fans than Van Hagar did.

Their best selling album ever is the first one. It's also the best one the EVER made. I prefer the wild,young and hungry sound to the middle of the road weak sappy love songs Sammy brought. All the fun left with Dave. As good as Eddie is..his most inspired and inspiring playing is on those first 2 or 3 records.

@@skybluemarshall ... No...I didn't. If I'm not mistaken your point was and I quote "Sammy Hagar saved Van Halen". I disagree. Sammy Hagar help to create Sammy Hagar helped to create Van Hagar which for my money is a totally different band that Van Halen despite the name. More Poppy Less Attitude Less Edgy and trying way too hard to be friendly. In other words Foreigner or Sir Supply with a great guitarist.
@skybluemarshall
@skybluemarshall 5 жыл бұрын
@@FramrodLiggins If you understood my point, then why would you bring up anything having to do with David Lee Roth or the old band? Eddie didn't want DLR. He wanted Patty Smyth. He wanted Synth-pop. He wanted exactly everything that you just listed, that you don't like. What YOU wanted or what I wanted Van Halen to be, is completely and totally irrelevant. It was never going to happen. Eddie changed the band, not Sammy. Eddie was headed in a direction that could have been a lot worse than what Van Halen fans actually ended up with. Eddie was shooting for something along the lines of New Wave, keyboard and synth oriented, Pop-Rock with a female lead singer. You disagree with my statement that Sammy saved Van Halen, because you are looking at it from the point of view of a fantasy. The DLR version of Van Halen was totally over, because Eddie wanted it to be over. You can't compare Sammy to something that Eddie no longer wanted. I am looking at Sammy's presence in the band from a more realistic point of view. Eddie wanted his band to sound like Patty Smyth. Think about her and not DLR. Patty was the sound that Eddie was aiming for. And from my realistic point of view, Sammy saved Van Halen from what they might have sounded like, if Eddie had gotten his way. Like many other fans, you are stuck on this fantasy of something that simply wasn't possible. David Lee Roth was like big shot of good old whiskey. Eddie decided that he wanted a white wine spritzer and he refused to go back to whiskey. Sammy came into the picture and he was like a Cadillac Margarita. He was sweet and sappy, but at least he had more kick than a freaking white wine spritzer. Eddie said, "Ehh, close enough" and he went with Sammy's Margarita. It is from this perspective that I say, Sammy saved Van Halen. If anyone was hell bent on totally ruining VH, it was Eddie. If you realistically consider what Eddie was really trying to do, then Sammy saved the band and VH fans should feel lucky that they got Sammy.

@@skybluemarshall Thata a whole bunch of allegory and metaphoric detail. PERHAPS...if you had been more clear in your original post you could have saved youself all of that explanation. Imagine if 10000 people read your post ...how many do you think would reference it to Patty Smythe or synthpop? You made the blanket statement "Sammy saved Van Halen" That statement ccan be interpreted in several ways. To MY ears and taste in Rock...Van Halen with Hagar is not an continuation of Van Halen with Roth...it's a completely different band with a completely different musical, lyrical and visual direction. This speaks to your point that Ed want more pop. It also speaks to mine because to MY ears.. the combination Eddie's synth-pop efforts and Sammy Hagar's "Classic Rock" voice they became... Foreigner with a great guitar player and mediocre "classic rock" songs. There is no fantasy perspective at play here. To ME, they didn't get better when they grew up. I'm an older guy but I STILL don't like great bands that try to grow musically up while still acting like 20 year olds. ...and that is a pretty accurate description of Van Hagar...to ME. Patty Smythe???? Synth-pop????? Hagar didn't save Van Halen He facilitated Van Hagar To ME...those are two different bands. JUMP is a synthpop tune. It's also the band's most popular tune but Sammy never sounds convincing singing it ...at all. It's hard for a 35 year old dude to sing because it really isn't about anything. It's just ridiculously catchy even if you don't like it and the band's performance in the video was so stupid that you either love it or hate it. I think it's fantasy to ever believe that VH fans were going to remain VH fans with Patty Smythe or dude from the Human League singing. They would have been taking it with Patty Smythe and I think they were faking it with Hagar. The buzz left with Roth...and I'm no big fan of Roth's singing but he was hella better than say...Bon Scott or Brian Johnson. Patty Smythe... Who knows about all that?????

Look at the energy and passion they poured into this performance... easily matched (or surpassed) Pearl Jam or any of the other grunge bands that ruled early-90’s radio. These “old fellas” roared. And Sammy’s pre-show interview: I’m all for equality, but the world needs more unapologetic, alpha males singing good times rock.✌️

@@jcedars4784 - Roth has a better studio voice, and Roth's lyrics are much more deep and intellectual. Sammy's voice is great on and off stage, and he writes simple basic lyrics. You made a great point about us old Rockers. Van Halen changed EVERYTHING in 1978. The original FOUR formed the best Hard Rock band the USA has ever produced. They saved Rock and Roll from Disco and Punk. By the end in 1984 they were the biggest Rock band on the planet! That was the best six years of my life. My friends and I are some of the most hardcore Van Halen fans you'll find. So seeing them turn into Van Hagar was heartbreaking. Then in 2007 the reunion, the tour. Next came 2012 and the awesome Album ADKOT, and tour to support it. And lastly, 2015 tour which was excellent. Eddie is so much better when he is sober and happy. Eddie, Dave , and Al are all old men now. Dave's concert voice gets worse every tour. But Dave is one of the greatest Front Men in Rock history. Dave is a true Rock Star. Dave is a legendary ENTERTAINER. Sammy is a great lead singer and an average professional guitarist (his words, not mine), that's all. I loved Sammy Hagar in 1982-83 when I saw him on the Three Lock Box Tour. He was awesome and so was the album. Just for me personally, Eddie/Alex mixed with Sammy is like trying to mix oil and water. have a great day!

I really enjoyed OU812 when it came out because you could hear the Sammy influence. Finish What You Stared was so non-typical VH. Eddie was playing the same old licks, just regurgitated. He was getting stale, IMHO. When Sammy brought the bluesy influence in with his guitar playing and singing, it seemed to kickstart Eddie back into broadening his craft, which you can hear on the things like the drill at the beginning of Poundcake. It had been a very long time since Eddie brought a guitar sound in that made people perk up and listen. I remember the day that song dropped to radio stations, people were like "WTF is he doing there, that sounds incredible!!". It was simple but effective.
