Michael Anthony’s background vocals were always so key to their sound.

I saw a meme recently that asked what was the better VH vocalist, with pictures of Dave and Sammy. And if you scrolled down there was another photo of Michael Anthony, with his two thumbs pointing towards himself, captioned, "This Guy." Made me laugh out loud.

It's interesting because I once heard Ed talk in an interview about HIS voice being the other half of that background sound. He said it in a spiteful kind of way. It seems he never really liked Michael Anthony which confuses me because he seemed chill to me.

VH1 is their best, IMO, which isn't a dig to the others, but VH1's side 2 (remember sides? :) is just so above the norm. This, Feel Your Love Tonight, Little Dreamer, Ice Cream Man...excellent album songs that could have easily been huge singles.

@@dougman23 …it is where it all began. But, there is something special , clever and original about all the DLR VH songs. I believe most songs for the first 5 albums were written before the first album was recorded, or some variation of what made it to albums(“Voodoo Queen” became “Mean Street “), so, it makes sense that the best songs be chosen for their debut. But songs like “ Cradle Will Tock” or “Unchained” or “Meansteet” or “Hang em high” , Sunday Afternoon in the Park, all have really cool hooks…I would not want to be without any of them.Bummer Eddie is gone…never be another like him

It's funny that just about every one of their songs is a banger! Their voice harmonies are one of the many things that sets Van Halen apart from other bands. You have this incredible sizzling guitar sound and then they sing great. Dave sings Baritone, Ed sings second tenor, and of course Michael Anthony has the incredible iconic high 1sts tenor voice. That first album of theirs was the best album ever put out out in my opinion. It changed everything - especially on guitar. I like the quote, "it doesn't sound very dated" - so true Brad!

The song's lyrics were inspired by a real-life experience that David Lee Roth had. In an interview, he explained that he once had a one-night stand with a girl who was heartbroken over her ex-boyfriend. The next day, he saw her crying and wrote the song based on that experience. The song's opening guitar riff was actually inspired by the Kinks' hit song "All Day and All of the Night". Eddie Van Halen was a big fan of the Kinks and had previously covered their song "You Really Got Me" on Van Halen's debut album.

@@beatmet2355 I can see both opinions. I think the right frontman has tremendous impact promoting a band's image. If Steve Perry, Axl Rose or Vince Neil hadn't been frontmen, would they have had that explosive success at that time? Maybe. If VH started with a different frontman, would they have been as successful? Maybe. There's no denying Eddie's talent was out of this world and would have become a recognized force even if he started as a studio musician, like Fagan and Becker. Album of my youth that I still blast. Great thing about EVH was he didn't feel the need to show off with "watch how fast I can play!" during every break or solo. I think this song shows the features that made Van Halen Van Halen when they burst on the scene: incendiary electric guitar (EVH), flamboyant lead vocals (DLR), killer background vocals/harmonies (Michael Anthony), rock-solid drums (AVH), all wrapped up in a catchy tune.

Jamie’s Cryin’ is a classic VH song. This song was on VH’s debut album. EVH was goofin with this riff and the producer heard it and liked it and said the band should turn it into a song. The band came up with the music and David Lee Roth wrote the words in about an hour. Another great song from this album is “I’m The One” which has so much groove and guitar shredding. The guitar part was recorded in one take (though not the first take, just no overbdubs so it’s practically live).

VanHalen is one of those bands and there are not many who can stake claim to the same road that put VanHalen on the map. They were laughed at and dismissed by the agents of record labels and could not get the right people to attract fans to them. So, as any passion driven artist will do, they took themselves to the people. They played at parties, high school dances, college scenes and wherever else they could. Should they have let discouragement defeat them, well, we would never have been able to be enriched by such genuine and pure talent. The biggest and only hurdle for them was during that current era when they came into being, the multitudes of people were hypnotized by the dominance of Disco and Punk Rock. No record label would touch them. VanHalen, Kiss and Eminem all entered into an era as intruders and trespassers into the social norms for music that were determined at that time. And yet, they came out on top as more than conquerors!!!!

She nailed it with her analysis. It was definitely music written for young boys from a young boy's perspective. And I was the perfect age for that stuff. And every year of my high school years in around between Christmas and March they would release a record. And when they did you knew what the soundtrack for the entire summer was going to be. By the way a sample of this was used in a hip hop song by Tone Loc.

Tone-Loc sampled this way back in the 80s, and had a pretty huge hit for himself. 😂 Wish you’d do some more obscure VH tunes… Little Guitars, Big Bad Bill, Atomic Punk, Hang’em High, Top Jimmy, Dirty Movies, Loss Of Control… There are so many GREAT Van Halen songs that weren’t chosen by corporations, to be radio singles…

Lex, you pretty much nailed it VH during DLR era was from the perspective of a young male (teenage-early 20's) ; when Sammy came along the change was of a slightly older slightly wiser male but still up for a good time (late 20's).... right along with the ages of the band members.

Someone once told me - and this has stuck with me since - that it makes sense to think of Eddie Van Halen not as a musician, but as a songwriter. If you take away the blistering lead lines and solos, you still have these absurdly catchy riffs and masterfully composed pop songs, especially on the first few VH albums. He really was a pop songwriter who just happened to be a singularly talented, virtuoso guitar player.

Thank you for reviewing my all time favorite band. I love you guys! Jamie is a girl Diamond David Lee Roth wanted to sleep with in LA. She turned him down and she was sad that she didn't get to be with Dave. She wrote him a heartfelt letter and he's telling his audience what she told him in the letter "It said, Gimme a call sometime." But Dave wasn't into having girlfriends he just wanted to sleep with her, and she knew that. But Jamie had been in love before and she knows what love is for. She was looking for love, not a one night stand. @Brad & Lex

For Me, this song IS Van Halen. When I think of Van Halen, this is the first song that comes to mind. Lex you nailed it once again, early Van Halen (Dave era) was the music of youthful exuberance and trying to conquer the world. Later Van Halen (Van Hagar era) was a mature, polished band trying to cement their place in history. Both are great, just different.

Van Halen did great vocal harmonies. The Dave years are the best. There was a 7-11 that had the 'thank you' door bell. It sounded exactly like Eddie's guitar after they sing "Jamies cryin'." Rockin out✌
