Earlier (rawer) VH is the best, as with most bands, before they get too far in the clutches of the label. They were already getting more commercial with this one, IMO. Runnin with the Devil, Unchained, Down on Mean Streat, Jamie's Cryin, Everybody Want's Some, Eruption/You Really Got Me Now are great examples of their dirtier, more auspicious beginnings. RIP Eddie🙏

I found some videos on Bitchutes of the audio of Eddie playing at party or a bar in San Bernardino !! from 1976, unbelievably better than I ever heard him play ! You could hear the confidence in his playing and I never heard these songs before and it was the most technical and extremely difficult guitar playing I've ever heard and he was flawless. It gave me chills because I was thinking he was probably only 18 or 19 years old and he was absolutely killing it and I know that those people at the party never heard anything like that before back then.

A bit of music history for the hosts, Edward Van Halen was invited by Quincy Jones and Michael Jackson to play on the album "Thriller". He re-arranged the center section of Beat It (without asking. Fortunately, Jackson loved it and thanked him for making the song better) and recorded the solo that went on the record. This was a game changer. Suddenly, radio stations that did not play Motown, Michael Jackson, nor other Black artists, were now playing Beat It heavily, helping to pave the way for Jackson and others to cross over and change the course of popular music. EVH refused any payment but did ask them to buy him some beer after the recording session...

One of the very best songs from that album, and my favorite from it. Eddie's guitars from that era are based on his own design he built himself for the '78 debut album, which cost him a grand total of $150 to craft. No joke. No production guitar at the time had all the elements he wanted, so at 22 he simply took the time to make the exact guitar he wanted, and voila, a legend was born. He simply changed up the black & white motif, for red & white later. David Lee Roth kept improving his stage performances on his solo run after the breakup, doing even more wacky flying stuff, out over the crowds even (we could almost touch him, lol), insane showmanship even if his solo songs lacked something in my opinion...I still respected his live presence.

That “crispy” thing you are missing is actually from the audio being slammed as hot as possible to where it almost distorts. You will come to prefer the older sound without the “crispy” effect. Older analog recordings (recoding to tape) are warmer and have more dynamic range. It can be achieved with digital but most digital is ran as hot as possible. So the better the equipment you use to listen the more you will come to appreciate that analog sound. An example of the advantages of analog/dynamic headroom, will be at the end of the guitar solo when the whole band brings down the dynamics the volume drops but the bass, punch and clarity remains. Modern recordings they would bring the audio up to match the rest song. It’ll sound fine just different. It becomes a preference the more you digest and are able to identify the differences. All the great records of the 70s and early 80s were almost all exclusively analog. I love this channel! I’ll keep tuning in for more reactions!
