Van Life! First Trip (part 2)

After finishing my camper build, I took a long trip to Portland. This was in Sep 2019. This was before I had a KZbin channel so forgive the novice quality. I'm still learning. This video is part 2 of 3. Hope you enjoy.

Ha! Like flying an airplane... I said the same thing to my sister when I showed her the video. Fun fact: I was actually going about 75 miles per hour but I sped up the film 3x so this is probably what 225 miles per hour looks like.

The overlook you were at starting 5:50 is just west of Arlington OR, and that is the Columbia River. Then your footage is mixed up and back in Wyoming or somewhere.

Haha! You're the first to notice that. Parts of this video was filmed on the way home but I pieced it together like it was all on the way to OR. In the third part, I visit Mt. Rushmore. Will see if anyone asks how that was possible.

That was some intense hail..Any damage to your van? Was this the 3 inch mattress you started out with? You were saying it was uncomfortable. Or the 6 inch which you changed to later? I've been to the World's famous I-80 truck stop in Iowa many times. Kinda of a tourist trap..Many things to spend your money on..But a interesting..The wind really blows across there in the winter time..Can make for a cold walk for showers..The footage was mixed up in this video..But interesting scenic views..Thank you for the video..Have a blessed day..

Yes, that hailstorm was the worst one I've ever driven through. There was so much hail, the roads look like winter. It was very dangerous but there was no damage to the car. This was the trip on which I learned a 3in mattress was not good enough. As soon as I got home I ordered the 6in one. Since then I've had a Texas trip, a Louisiana trip, a Colorado trip and a Pittsburgh trip and the 6in memory foam mattress has been superb! I've been there many times as well and I agree about that long cold walk. That's why whenever I had to stop there, I would go to the pilot across the street. The Iowa 80 Truckstop is fun to visit but there just wasn't much there I needed. And you're also right about the footage being mixed up. Good eye! When I shot this footage, I had no idea I was going to have a KZbin channel and try to make an interesting video out of it. I was really only filming it because my mother made me. Lol! She's never been out west and I can't seem to convince her to go. But she was interested in watching a video of my trip. So I ended up with all of these bits and pieces of video that I now have to try to fit together to tell a story. Future videos will be more cohesive. I will be filming them for the sole purpose of posting them to KZbin. Thanks for the comment!

The hail was insane! We kept slowing to a stop because the wind was so bad you couldn't see passed your windshield. But it's all part of the fun. Chrysler calls it "brilliant black crystal pearlcoat". It's just black with glitter in the paint so it looks gray in the right light. Part 3 should be available next week. It's not as dramatic but I do find some rocks!

What is the video camera branch you are using ?

When I wasn’t using my 5 year old Samsung Galaxy S6, I used a cheap Sony camcorder I borrowed from my older sister. I'm waiting to get a thousand subscribers before allowing myself to spend money on a good camera. It looks like we're getting close so I've been doing a ton of research on cameras lately. I'm happy to have finally narrowed it down to either the Canon Vixia HF G50, JVC GY-HM170UA, or Panasonic AG AC30. More on this later.

I forgot to ask your thoughts generally overall on the Pacifica and what kind of mpg you were averaging please? My Town and Country AWD got as high as 31mpg and averages about 22. I realize this is an older video but all the same enjoyable. Thank you

Well, I love my Pacifica. but that's because it does every little thing I need it to do. It fits my current lifestyle perfectly. On the highway, I can get it up to 30 miles per gallon. But it's a 19 gallon tank so I can potentially go over 500 miles on one fill up. This is my first minivan. Before this, I always had SUVs and the idea of going 500 miles on one tank was unheard of. But I have to say, I'm a little jealous of your all-wheel drive. Chrysler stopped doing that in 2014 but it looks like it's going to be back for the 2021 model. Okay, I think I'm rambling now.

@@VantasticPacifica I'm in the market or a new van so that's how I found your channel on youtube. I really do like the AWD so Toyota seems the only current alternative but the price is unappealing. I really don't like how the seat sets and especially no stow and go- which my Town and Country does not have either due to AWD! So, it appears the Pacifica is my favorite choice overall. Keep making your videos if you can during these strange times. Thank you

Lol! That's a recent development. My standard operating proceedure is to set the cruise control at 60mph and stay in the slow lane. It's very relaxing when you never have to pass anyone or worry about cops. But out west, the speed limit is 80mph! I just had to see what that felt like.

Awesome video and points of view..I love your perspective also..Why and how did you conclude the Pacifica was right over a Sienna or Odyssey? Everyone knows them two for there reliability over an American vehicle..

Great question. Well, in fact the Odyssey was my knee jerk first choise. But coming from a long history of SUVs, I was attracted to AWD option offered by the Sienna. But the Pacifica was the first with adaptive cruise and panoramic sunroof. I also absolutly had to have the stow&go seats. It was essential for my needs. I also think Pacifica is the best looking minivan ever built. As far as reliability goes... well, I'm prolly screwed.

@@VantasticPacifica I had an odyssey years ago..it was great but I did have to remove some seats left at home on long road trips.The stow n go is nice to have. Do you feel like an SUV over the minivan such as a pilot would of givin you more an offroad advantage on your road trips at times?

@@freddyo2k10 Well, there's off road adventure and there's on road adventure. It was a choice I had to make. I totally miss 4WD and going off road. But I'm ejoying all the extra space and great fuel economy. An SUVs interior room can't compete with a minivan. In a few years, I plan to go with a Ram 1500 with a truck camper and go all the places I can't now.

I would have liked to have started out with a bigger van but I couldn't find one with adaptive cruise control at the time. I also like rain sensing wipers and lane keeping assist and backup cameras and other techy stuff. But those things aren't really important as long as you're out there living the dream. Good luck!
