Coming from a backpacking approach, I always slept in minimal clothing...the reason being, wearing bulky clothing inside the bag can reduce the bag's ability to efficiently trap body heat!! Instead, use that extra clothing ON TOP of your bag... or use a comforter over the bag. Also, be sure what's beneath you is not conducting the cold.... such as using a closed-cell material for best protection. I'm sure you both also know that with the bed structure, its good to have holes in you support frame....to allow air circulation in order to prevent condensation from building up. Grew up camping all summer. We took off clothes in the sleeping bag, kept them inside. Body heat kept them warm, and put them on before getting up. not a mummy bag though. Love you.

Merino wool undergarments are amazing. Wool socks as well. Wool is the way to go, and it doesn't stink either, they can go for weeks and still not smell, but synthetics stink within a few days

I like his double situation, shows some experience. You know to now from experience from sweating in 0° bag 20° would have been better and double up for colder weather. Personally I like just using blankets and sheets. Good vented heat setup ya can run all during coldness so never that bad anyway. If I get stingy on fuel then blankets work well cause I got dogs that need covered up too

Awesome job. If Gabe builds you up then you are lucky. Everyone should have a Gabe. Gabe is correct on sleeping in his underwear. I don't remember the science behind it but the body spills heat and the sleeping bag reflects it back warming the entire area inside the bag. You may have noticed your feet get cold but otherwise you are comfortable? That's the effect of sleeping in clothing. I would put what I was going to wear the next day in the bag with me but not on. That way I could get dressed inside the bag at least mostly dressed before getting up. Gabe........they don cost much......get a CO2 detector or sleep without the heater going. CO2 sinks having the window cracked does almost nothing. ....or check into a tiny Dickerson sailboat heater something that draws air for combustion form the outside....but when you see the cost you'll be glad to know CO2 devices are cheap and you Mom Dad or some person out there will be glad you have it.

Yeah! everyone does need a Gabe. I don't always zip up the sleeping bag because the clothing is usually enough aslong as it is around freezing. That sounds like an efficient method putting the clothing at the bottom. Yeah! Gabe is no longer using his heater and plans on getting a Carbon Monoxide detector. Thanks

Playing catch up on your videos and had such a good laugh with this one - tears man! you two are great fun. My husband and I are heading out in just a few more weeks and making our way that direction, hoping the van shows up to trade our subi for before we have to leave. But we had a trial mobile adventure this winter living in a ski resort parking lot (my husband was teaching skiing at Mt. Bachelor in central Oregon and hopes to do the same up in Flagstaff next winter), completely off grid, epoch snow, and for a whole month in a borrowed 26 foot camp trailer (uninsulated)! Talk about adventure. Much of what you two share is right on for staying warm... even the think warmer thoughts part - no really! We had some negative temps go on for days and the little buddy could only do so much!) Hope we run into you guys when we get to the area.

the buddy heater has an o2 sensor and will shut off if there is to much co2 or not enough o2 or something .... sweat shirts and pants work better than thermals and dont shrink! unless like me you put on 50lbs over the winter, get one set that fits snug and another larger size to go over those

Ascend is Bass Pro Shops equivalent of Colman in my experience....if you ever come to southern Missouri, Bass Pro has a clearance building in their HQ store in Springfield and Coleman has an outlet store in Branson. I dont really buy coleman or ascend anymore, but Redhead is ok, you can get a stormtek jacket at tye clearence store for pretty cheap, $30-40 and its waterproof and warm for such a thin jacket

Its actually more effective to sleep with less clothing as your body generates heat that your sleeping bag traps inside. More clothes, less effective your sleeping bag becomes at insulating. Don't breath into your bag either as you'll trap moisture. It's best to do some jumping jacks before you strip down ass nekit or into a merino wool base layer and climb on in

actually sleeping in your underwear any sleeping bags is the best thing you do they teach that in the military I got a friend of on mine who was taught in the military to do that your body heat actually warms up the inside of your sleeping bag contradictory to I believe that wearing more layers is best

Wizard Dream and to add to that he was Marine Recon they teach you that when you are in freezing weather you get in your sleeping bag and get down into your underwear your body will generate enough heat it will be trapped inside the sleeping bag as for layering you only want to do3 due to the fact that your body generates enough Heat and it will dissipate if you do more layers that's with clothing

You guys should try out the clay pot candle heater with the fan modification. I've been meaning to try this out to see how it works but I don't live in a van so I'm not sure how effective it is.
