Hi guys...you two are survivors for sure...those winds you got must be what's up here on the east coast as Nova Scotia is in day two of a forecasted three day snow storm and cape Breton is getting hammered...may you be blessed with HEALTH and safety on your continued journey

We found out the winds are called the Tehuano winds and they funnel down a mountain pass and out to sea. They are notoriously ferocious and dangerous to sailors. They are common over those plains, couldn't believe the amount of lorries tipped over. Hope you're staying safe up in the snowstorms of NS xx 💛

I'm so pleased you're looking more like yourself Ches it's miserable being that ill in those temperatures. I had food poisoning in Egypt and it was horrid. I sympathise with driving in those high winds especially when you see overturned lorries. Chesca, good that you came out the Montezuma revenge and are good again. Montezuma revenge refers to the US invasion of Mexico in the 19th century. Chesca, the symptoms displayed by you were very concerning and, I hope it does not happen again, but if it does, please seek emergency medical care. When someone is vomiting and in those degrees of temperature, the risk to get very dehydrated is very high and the fact that you were desorientated means that there was a serious electrolytes imbalance which can lead to cardiac arrest. I hope you are totally recovered now. Lots of love from Portugal ❤️
@Jayapullani
@Jayapullani 10 ай бұрын
It could have been heatstroke, sunstroke. I was quite ill from that last year for a while and ended up in hospital. I have also seen people vomit with it. Later they discovered the electrolytes and Vitamin D defeciency.
@OverlandingSophia
@OverlandingSophia 10 ай бұрын
I know it was really bad 😔 We were nowhere near a doctor or even a pharmacy where we were parked. We usually have electrolyte sachet stuff but threw a load away at Christmas because it had got wet and ruined. The disorientation was horrible, the thirst was worst than the throwing up, it was almost maddening. By the end I was drinking water and juice anyway just to get some fluid, even if it came out again 20 minutes later. We need to make sure we re-stock our first aid kit for times like that. Never knew you could get shock or cardiac arrest from electrolyte imbalance!

Not far away is Fuentes Georginas, hot spring pools and great hiking trails. There is a fee to get in but the drive up the mountain with the Mayan fields is breathtaking. There are also great markets and the nearby town of Almolongo is a traditional Mayan village. If you are into cemeteries, walk through Cementerio General, rivals the famous New Orleans cemetery. I don't think there is a vaccine for dengue which is why it can be so bad - the more you get it, the more severe it gets each time 😥 The wind was unreal, found out it's a natural phenomenon called the Tehuano Winds which funnel through the Sierre Madre mountain pass. I bet you were crossing between the mountain ranges that creates the famously feared “tehuantepecer winds”. I never thought of the shore side effects of that area. As sailors go up and down the Pacific coast they have to make that passage between the peak of those conditions typically in January. Some try to stay so close to land they call it “dog bark navigation” as in if you can’t hear the dogs on shore you’ve gone too offshore to keep protected by the land. Getting blown offshore is very dangerous in those conditions. Keep on trucking!

Not at all! We didn't really make it clear in the video but when we left the coast to reach the town of San Cristobal, the temperatures dropped massively. At the coast where it was 35 celsius, we never left the dogs in the van. They stayed outside with us in the shade. At the campsite in San Cristobal, we're shaded under trees and the temperature was only around 23 celsius so with the fans on, they were much more comfortable being left alone for a couple of hours. We very rarely leave them unless it's cool enough to do so 💛

I lived in Guatemala for a year. Beautiful country. The drive to El Salvador is beautiful (I did it in a car and a motorcycle) and the border crossing easy. Just remember to pass all the trucks lined up at the border. Or should I say “queued up”😊. Please put Antigua on your stop list

Ah we're honestly so excited to explore there. We won't be crossing into El Salvador because we can't drive to Costa Rica/Nicaragua with a RHD van. So we'll be looping back up into Belize after 💛

@@OverlandingSophia sounds like fun. Panajachel is fabulous as well. I have a couple of videos on my channel taken on my motorcycle there. If you get down by Montericco, Guatemala, there is great surf and beach but the undertows are dangerous so please be careful. Tikal is amazing to visit just to see the Star Wars Rebel base location shots. I enjoy your channel I I love to travel and see the real side of countries rather than resort life.

My question is “ Why didn’t you stop and wait for the wind to cease?” Seems that you really took a stupid chance driving in those winds…
@OverlandingSophia
@OverlandingSophia 9 ай бұрын
Because those winds don’t really cease (teacapan winds), and we had no idea how long we would be waiting. Sometimes you have to make a decision when neither option is ideal 🤷‍♀️

Yeah I think that wind was some of the worst we've ever driven in, could almost feel the wheels moving sideways beneath us! At one point, we didn't capture it on camera, but we rounded a corner and the wind kicked the back of the van out. Clive, sorry - Ben, did such a good job driving! 😂 Hope you're having a lovely Sunday, love from us xx

Yes! Lots of small towns have motels and little rooms to rent for the night. We were looking when I was sick but decided to just move on instead. Not sure on the prices but they probably aren’t very high.

Sorry guys, I didn't worn you about going to Mexico and drinking the "water /ice" their water treatment isn't the same as in America (often times, there's feces and / or other bacterical microbial in the water / ice). In America, the water treatment is safer, it goes through multi stages of treatment to remove the bad stuff.

Don’t worry we already know not to drink the water! There are agua purificada stations all over Mexico where we can get filtered water to fill the van with. This illness was probably something I ate, as only I got sick and not Ben.

Ok so a note to travelers in small towns they often don't have doctors. In medium to larger towns and cities they have lots of doctors. Issues like flu, cold, food poisoning are common and cheap for treatment, many big pharmacies will have a doctor that works for them and if you are lucky the doctor will be at the pharmacy you are physically in but if not, say I feel sick, vomit is vomit in Spanish. It's close enough to understand. Nausea is nausea in Spanish.. again if you say it they will understand.. and diarrhea is diarrhea in Spanish. It will not be @$30 bucks worst case scenario but you may need to go a few blocks or take a cab ride for $3-6 bucks to get to the other pharmacy. Many doctors get a sitting fee to keep office hours at a location and they get a per appointment fee and a small commission if you buy the drugs from the pharmacy.. Mexico doesn't have the same formulary as United States.. but nobody has the same formulary as the United States..so if you want some obscure drug you saw on TV in the states they don't have it. For most food poisoning they give you 2,3 meds and one will be an antibiotic, and if your condition is not the best, they will give you a kicker and give you a strong injection of antibiotics and then you need to take the cycle that they prescribe.. and often they have another med that is like a probiotic that kills whatever is living down there but doesn't work as fast as an injection and tablets..if you are on a bicycle, motorcycle or van driver you have to get up to speed fast and they know that.. you can get a walk in consult for as little as $6,7 bucks.. and pills not much more and injection $4-6 bucks..
