That was a great video. I’m 69 years old and have been off roading, camping for 50 years. The Overland craze is well, I’ll leave it at that. I presently also own a Revel which I just did 39 days and 8700 miles in. I really enjoyed both of your honest opinions on Overlanding and Vanlife and Mall Landers. I can appreciate the way that you're creating your own terms, such as "Weekenderlanding," to fit your actual style of doing things. I'm trying to get into an overlanding-type of endeavor (but limited to weekends, probably). However, I'm starting off my doing it in my GTI to see how I like it before investing in another vehicle. I'm coining the term "Microlanding" since my trips will be done on a small scale and with a small vehicle. HAHA! I'm not sure if it qualifies as "car camping" because my car is too small to sleep inside. But my voyages are about the journey (overlanding). My camping with be a result of the drive, instead of the drive being a result of the camping, if that makes sense. We'll see where it goes. I'm already a LLOD subscriber, which is how I got here. Van Life vs Overland isn't a good description and point of discussion. Overlanding is a full spectrum of those that take to vehicle based travel, whether a van, pickup truck or rock crawler. Overlanding is a broad term for everything in between. How is traveling and seeing things via van, not overlanding?

Because most people define overlanding as "being accomplished with mechanized off-road capable transport" and most vans are not 4x4 and off road capable.

In my early 20s i had a single cab Silverado and a small Jon boat i went everywhere with, when I was camping i made a lean- to with one end of the jon boat on the tail hate and the other end propped up on the cab and slept under it in the bed of the truck! E4 budget overlanding!

Getting gear together for some outdoor adventure. A vehicle is further down the road. On one hand, I want an off roader for exploring backroads and trails, but nothing extreme like the overlander channels I watch. I like exploring, but I'm not crazy. I just want the security of 4wd incase of situations. Heck, I take my sedan off road a few times (ok maybe I am crazy).On the other hand, I want the comfort of a van (storage, etc). Every tent I owned since the 1970's leaked like a sive. Either the material or the seams. No amount if spray, weatherproofing, etc would stop it. I dont want the hassel of tarps (folding, storage,setting up, etc). Plus the hassle of setup and tear down. Plus a van would allow for better escaping the weather, longer on the road - just pull over and sleep/ nap. But a van does not take to backroads like a jeep or truck would. Decisions, decisions....

Both rigs are awesome, just built for different purposes. When people argue which setup (or whatever)is best I wish they could see that everyone has different needs to fulfill their personal dreams/hobbies. In addition saying that your way is better is usually rooted in insecurity, trying to act superior by down putting others.

They are both cool lifestyle's and the way I'd look at it is if you have a home base house or apartment because you work a job that requires you to be at your shift 5 day's a week etc, then you buy a rig for your off time and according to your budget/family life, or vacation time etc. If you make it your full time lifestyle, then buy a kick ass rig that your going to live out of and ditch the mortgage or apartment payment and go exploring and make some wicked memories and start your own channel! This stuff is what DREAMS are made of for guy's like me. I would sell it all and start this lifestyle now if I could but, you never know, maybe in the future.. Time will tell. You guy's are, and have been BLESSED! OHH, before I forget, I started watching Talon Sei when he bought his Subaru Crosstrek and Last Line of Defense a few months ago with his Overlander vid's.. You guy's do a great job!

Great video, nice to see a topic that's going backwards and forwards in my brain most days. There is the van, there is is the truck, and there is a small little community inbetween that build custom campers on the back of the pick ups. There's a very good patrol on instagram with a custom built poptop box on the back. Just a slightly cushier version of the 'weekenderlander'... Nice!

I would definitely go van life but probably with a ford transit just for the fact that you really don’t have to deal with the diesel aspect of the Mercedes sprinter. Plus there are models of the transit that have an ecoboost so in turn you have almost less maintenance and better fuel economy making it just a bit easier on yourself and your wallet

So you can't overland in a van? I think a van with AWD, a lift and off road equipped is the ultimate overland vehicle. Just being able to sleep in a bed, shower and cook and eat inside and outside as an option is the best way to overland.

I'm more journey and destination as well. Car camping is for short trips, like beach, or mountains.
