My grandmother called me today, told me what she thought of me living in my car. Wasnt good and I broke down after to my mom, they want me to do what I'm suppose to do. Rent a room and work and it's never worked, addictions been following me my whole life. It's been 2 months in my tiny little prius and I'm sober, I'm happy and I cant join this rat race again just to throw my money at someone for a roof under my head that I hate.

@Mike Chandler Sea Fever BY JOHN MASEFIELD “I must down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky, And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by; And the wheel’s kick and the wind’s song and the white sail’s shaking, And a grey mist on the sea’s face, and a grey dawn breaking. I must down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied; And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying, And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying. I must down to the seas again, to the vagrant gypsy life, To the gull’s way and the whale’s way where the wind’s like a whetted knife; And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover, And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick’s over”. Your story about a second relationship struck me, I went through a very similar episode. I was downsizing, met a girl, moved into her home and within seconds we started role playing like we were married, ugh. I found myself mowing the lawn, doing repairs, blah blah blah and hated it. This isn't downsizing! I hopped back into the trap! Took a year to recognize what my feelings were and why I was SO unhappy, then I moved out. I don't feel so bad about it now that you have shared your story ;) So my rule is no more dating, unless all she owns is a dog and a sleeping bag.

@Zippsters6 жыл бұрын
but there's a good chance even her, her dog, her sleeping bag would get boring to you again - you are part of a huge trend in this world's thinking - that love relationships are supposed to deliver the sensations acted out in movies, TV and romance novels. In reality male/female love relationships were designed for us to be help-mates - that is to help meet one another's needs. You scratch my back I'll scratch yours but when one or both have wandering eyes looking for that ultimate thrilling feeling - like demonstrated falsely in the ads and movies then they look back at the same old partner and think, I'm not 'in love' start telling themselves they're bored not only with her/him but with their entire life. But, in reality that is falling into the temptation to fantasize that the grass is greener elsewhere. "Godliness with contentment is great gain."

Good for you for taking at least half the responsibility for your marriage break-up and for not grousing about giving your family half your income. I just absolutely cannot imagine working at a grocery store or anything like that for 35 years, I am 19 and am about to lose my mind in a job after close to 1 year. From the time I was a child I knew exactly that I wanted to travel. I literally dreamed about leaving earth and going into space to never return my entire life, I always knew I would and could never exist just to make someone else money working somewhere like that. Over the years those dreams were suffocated by schools and society telling me, being an astronaut is only for the best, you'll fail if you don't go to college and get a day job, things like that and the only time I was truly enjoying life to the fullest was when I was traveling with my parents. We first traveled across the us but never farther west that the dakotas. We eventually began to travel to puerto Escondido, Mexico and Roatan Honduras. These were some of the best times of my entire life, it was more than travel, it was living. I eventually got a job and went to college. I made it through about 4 months of college until. I got so depressed that I could not go on. I dropped out, and kept working part time at FedEx, during the day I was free and was having adventures every day and weekend. This was amazing and I had an electric car so had very few bills. During this time I was renting a garage loft from my parents and after a few months my father came to me and said I would have to leave if I did not get a full time job. I am 17 at this point. I eventually was forced into a factory job that a cousin worked at and was working 10 hour shifts a day. I again got ferociously depressed and my anxiety was unlike what I had ever experienced and I was diagnosed as anxiety depression disorder. The factory eventually went under new ownership, and they ran it into the ground. We were all laid off and I was without work. I was spending my days outside for the few weeks and enjoying freedom. Eventually my father and I came back around to the same impasse. "Get a full time job, or get out." I eventually got a job at sprint, now 19, thinking I might enjoy a job where I have conversations might give me less of a sense of being cooped up. This has made it much, much worse. Over these years I have grown very very fond of cars, which I believe was a subconscious thing to get my mind away, and have became extremely fond of German cars. I eventually used my inheritance to by a brand new dream car of mine, a Volkswagen GTI as loaded and exactly as close to my vision as possible. I tuned it up and modified it, all while still 19 and continued to get more and more into Volkswagen and Audi cars, old and new. This eventually led me to get a mk1 gti to restore. After searching for and finding this car, I eventually stumbled across a Volkswagen Vanagon Westfalia. I instantly was in love and began to look up videos about these hoping to purchase one. I ran across more and more videos of people camping in them and then finally found videos of the Vandwellers. Finally after years of being in a mundane haze of everyday 9-5 life my wanderlust was sparked back to life and I began researching all the vans and cars and minivans people were using to create a life in wheels. I then came across the Don of van dwelling, Bob. All the information I wanted and needed I could and did get from you. I recently purchased a Ford E-350 15 passenger shuttle bus, I am currently awaiting the sale of my dream car which I am not awaiting with excitement, I deeply care for it and hate the fact of someone else owning it but it is what will be funding my van conversion and my life on wheels until I am at a point where I will need money again, I am already happier and my only regret is not doing this sooner. I hope to meet you in person someday so I can properly thank you, but even then I will not be able to thank you enough.

I found your story especially interesting because it flies in the face of the values most of us have been convinced of. Every time you turn on the TV or pick up a magazine, you get the same message: if you want to be happy, accumulate, buy, more, more, more! Buy a bigger house. Buy more stuff to put in it. Then replace that stuff with better stuff. You end up spending almost all your time just amassing and maintaining stuff, stuff, stuff, and wondering why you're not happy yet.
@Zippsters6 жыл бұрын
DwightMS1 Have you ever watched any of the KZbin videos on hoarders? I would have thought those docs fairly dover dramatized had I not worked in a profession where I spent lots of time in new Millennium households but it is just as real in North America as it is on the Hoarder documentary from the UK - it has become more than being slaves to stuff as you speak of in your comment but also a serious mental illness. I believe there will be a massive change in the way humans life in the next decade - imagine what this new horrendous hurricane on the Florida Panhandle will mean for thousands more people - ruination after ruination by natural disaster will completely change what we think of possessions - probably, will be better if we are forced to stop amassing useless s_ _ _!!

I have moved around my whole life, which I enjoyed, but always worked high-stress jobs in law firms which was not good for my mental health. Now I'm OLD, but I still have enough energy to hit the road and really enjoy my retirement without the constant worrying about money and maintaining my sticks and bricks. Peope will think I'm crazy, but I will rely on your videos (and many others) for knowledge and encouragement. Thanks for all your unbelievably valuable videos!

Thanks for everything you do, you have helped to inspire myself and others to try van life. I use to be afraid of the stigma of people thinking I live out of a van (even though I don't full-time) until I ran into your channel and from there discovered a whole culture of people. I stopped caring what ignorant people think about van or vehicle dwelling.

Well Bob...You have certainly opened my eyes to what life could be for me....aged 67, 2 marriages gone...two grownup kids and a stuck in one room house share with great guys but would love to be free of this and have the freedom to get a van and just go go go.....but due to health reasons am just slightly scared to go it alone.....but I admire your strength and guts doing what you and many others are doing.... am in UK so not sure I would be brave enough but I can dream....Thank you for sharing this great video .... you are a lovely guy and I hope you enjoy many more wonderful nomad times....God bless XXX

Bob Wells. you are an absolute inspiration to me. I have watched your videos and watched "Without Bound". I love the dedication you have to help others experience the freedom you enjoy. I have been living in a warehouse for nearly 4 years where I work. I have a fridge, toaster oven, microwave. I work part time for the owner of this business plus free-lance for others. The van life is my goal, and you have educated me more than anyone, although I have learned from some others on KZbin. I thank you and appreciate you for all you do to help liberate people from the American Nightmare. Long Life And Health To You!!! I will continue to receive your knowledge and wisdom...Greg.

Awesome video! I left the Alaskan bush in 95 after raising and homeschooling my kids in the bush as a single parent for 12 yrs. I wanted freedom and no bills so it worked for 12 yrs. Just got lonely with only kids to relate with. Came to Oregon and after building and living in my tiny house for yrs. sold it to live in my van i bought last year. Cheers to a life of freedom and nature.

Joni Loverin Wow, that is awesome? Do you stay in Oregon? I lived in Portland for a year in 2013, and I'm leaving Arizona in November when my lease is up, and I am considering buying a small piece of land and parking a van on it. Such a beautiful state! Curious if you have left it, because it's a difficult place to leave.

Bob, you and I have a very similar history. Divorce was the catalyst for me moving into a van. I worked in a grocery store for 18 years and I also found dissatisfaction with Christianity and left. However, my children are young so I'll be in the "box truck city dweller" phase of my life for many years to come.

Very inspiring. I know you realize you are helping us with your life's mission and purpose. But I honestly don't think you really know just how much. And how powerful this movement is. You are a big, big influence on it. Most of us are very silently moving to it so the real numbers cannot be known. The vast majority of us are not on a Utube channel.

You sound just like my dad. he had itchy feet too. he left when I was 6 and I didn't see him again till I was twentythree. In and out of my life at that point. He died 4 years ago and I barely knew him. even though I always loved him dearly, it hurt tremendously.

Thank you for being so honest, Bob. Wonderful that you've found what makes you happy....actually what is real for you. I had a good laugh and insight, the other day when I googled, "Introvert vs. extrovert." Took a couple tests. Both said I was 89%/92% in the "need for space" classification. We are all some introverted and some extroverted but usually, one more than the other. It's really fun to take the tests. I learned that most of us do not understand these terms and often use them wrong. Introvert does not equal shy.....that's a beginning. I really liked your talk. Lots of emotions in that short talk. Congrats on you being you.

All of your videos ooze a feeling of enthusiasm for helping people to enjoy their lives as Van-nomads. Even those of us who still share our lives with a Sticks-and-bricks home, an RV, and in my case a Country Farm, really appreciate seeing your love for your Nomad life.
