album: Hymns To The Silence
www.vanmorrison...
art by Michael Vincent Manalo
Lyrics:
Oh my dear, oh my dear sweet love
Oh my dear, oh my dear sweet love
When I'm away from you, when I'm away from you
Well I feel, yeah, well I feel so sad and blue
Well I feel, well I feel so sad and blue
Oh my dear, oh my dear, oh my dear sweet love
When I'm away from you, I just have to sing, my hymns
Hymns to the silence, hymns to the silence
Hymns to the silence, hymns to the silence
Oh my dear, oh my dear sweet love it's a long, long journey
Long, long journey, journey back home
Back home to you, feel you by my side
Long journey, journey, journey
Yeah in the midnight, in the midnight, I burn the candle
Burn the candle at both ends, burn the candle at both ends
Burn the candle at both ends, burn the candle at both ends
And I keep on, `cause I can't sleep at night
Until the daylight comes through
And I just, and I just, have to sing
Sing my hymns to the silence
Hymns to the silence, hymns to the silence
My hymns to the silence
I wanna go out in the countryside
Oh sit by the clear, cool, crystal water
Get my spirit, way back to the feeling
Deep in my soul, I wanna feel
Oh so close to the One, close to the One
Close to the One, close to the One
And that's why, I keep on singing baby
My hymns to the silence, hymns to the silence
Oh my hymns to the silence, hymns to the silence
Oh hymns to the silence, oh hymns to the silence
Oh hymns to the silence, hymns to the silence
Oh my dear, my dear sweet love
Can you feel the silence? can you feel the silence?
Can you feel the silence? can you feel the silence?
Hymns to the silence, hymns to the silence
Hymns to the silence, hymns to the silence
Hymns to the silence, hymns to the silence
Hymns to the silence, hymns to the silence
Hymns to the silence, hymns to the silence.

This song is absolute perfection. My heart is still breaking, my heart is still aching. I was with my husband for 37 years. He left for someone half our age and she has two little kids. Since then we have a beautiful granddaughter whom he has never seen. God, let me get over this pain

I have loved Van's music since "Moon Dance" (1970) and I can't say how happy I am to see that he, like me, also has a heart for God. Those were turbulent times to make your way through and keep your head above the waves. Hearing that familiar voice of his makes me feel that I have come full circle. God Bless you, Van.

Growing up I would hear the typical radio play, Brown Eyed Girl etc... and thought that was what Van was all about. Then I heard this, no I felt this like nothing before. I literally stopped in my tracks and was so overcome with emotions I cried. Never looked back and I love Van's music, have over 150 tracks on CD. I truly feel sorry for those who do know that this music is out there. God Bless Van, love ya

I've been following his music all along ... and you are so right. Brown Eyed Girl was one thing ... great song, 60's pop ... but songs like "Hymns to the Silence" are SO MUCH more! There are many who have no idea - about the depth and the level of soul that Van's music has taken over the decades. He is a master!

Some years back, when jukeboxes first allowed deep cuts, I put this on in a rowdy pool hall. By the end, there was dead silence in the room. It was incredible. The only sound was the female bartender, asking me who that was and where could she get it. Van has the kind of power.

And so today, right now at this very moment in the time that is my life on this earth, I find myself to be in 'A State Of Grace' listening to this song by this amazing and magnificent and inspiring man Van Morrison. Over the last almost six years - next month November 25 will mark the completed six - I have more and more frequently been finding myself in this very place. And while in the first days, weeks and months it was so hard to get here, it has become so much more attainable since - almost six years ago - I asked God to give me the strength to stop drinking alcohol, to stop being a drunk - and He heard and He answered by prayers, my cry in the darkness and HE DID! My mind and my body have never been healthier and more agile and more stable than I have ever experienced in my lifetime. And my spirit, my closeness and connection and harmony with Almighty God have never before been so uplifted and worthy of celebration, proclamation and sharing. Thank You Lord for SAVING MY LIFE! And many thanks Van Morrison for sharing your amazing talents with those of us who have discovered your beauty and who celebrate the journeys and the places that you have taken us with you along the way. Life is so full of beauty if only we would open up our hearts and minds and just give it the chance to be just that. God is so very great and merciful indeed.

@@humanitos.davidizquierdo6416 I don't think that many people can stop a serious, life threatening addiction of any kind by him or herself alone. In what I believe are the three main roads to personal redemption, salvation and rehabilitation from an addiction - the three being medical and psychological treatment, help and support from loved ones and family or one of the many miracles that come from Almighty God - I chose the last among them because I truly believed that this was the best path for me, given my own personal circumstances. And by the Grace, the Forgiveness and Healing Hands of God Almighty, this way has worked for me. I am now in my seventh year and a bit of complete and total sobriety without any slip ups or 'falling off the wagon' as the saying goes. For those people out there who think or believe that there is no hope for them, no way out of this darkest of seemingly never ending, personal nightmares, I would encourage them to NEVER GIVE UP and NEVER LOSE HOPE! Without Hope and Dreams for a better day ahead, life is not worth living. It is that very Hope and those Dreams, Desires and Expectations for a New Day and a Better Way that keep pushing and driving and moving us on down the road of life. And it is from God Almighty that this Hope comes. It is our Faith in Him that will see out of these dark days, that will pull us back from the edge of the precipice and lead us to His Promised Land - both here on this Earth while we are alive and to Heaven above when our time here is finished. Thank You David. All the best to you and your loved ones as well.

I once asked a friend if he listened to Van Morrison. He stated no, because he couldn’t identify what he was singing about. I told him, he is singing about everything...you will ever feel, experience and think of.

makes me cry every time I hear this. Reminds me of times past and journeys of no return. Some things never change but this allows my heart to release a little more ache each time. So all good I guess with each new daybreak after a little of hymn's to the silence. Afterall, silence speaks volumes.

Great musician for sure. Back then the music had a purpose, meaning, feeling and a story to tell and they touched our hearts and souls with their music cause it had a meaning and purpose to tell us a story about how they felt and they put it to us to feel and learn from it. It was a magical time for music. Thanks Van. God Bless you and your gift to all of us. Your music will go on forever.

I had a dream once that I was dancing with my Daddy. He passed away in 2005. We were swaying slowly to “Into the Mystic.” I will never forget it. This dream was a message for me. The man who caused a great deal of trauma to me and my daughter loved Van Morrison. The dream, to me, offered solace and peace instead of trauma, through that particular piece of music. I love that song and many of Van’s songs still. I’d never heard this one and am grateful to have been introduced to it. Hymns to the Silence is very calming and spiritual, reminding me to allow myself moments of silence to be able to hear messages from the creator of all that is, source energy, God. Love to all, in oneness. 🙏🏻💗🕊

What a mesmerising piece of music this is. And this comment section.. amazing to read anekdotes about this bringing a rowdy pool hall to silence, dedications to their loved ones who passed away, personal attachments and the list goes on. Van the Man truly brings people together with his music, it is amazing. I can not recommend this enough to people. S.J., this will always remind me of you, us and the lovely times we've had. May you be well, it's unfortunate our lives crossed at the time it did, but I did enjoy every bit of it, thank you.

Hi Mr. Burke. Thank you for your kind comment. Mine was in jest. Van Morrison is from Belfast I believe and Protestant, but I am not sure if he is genetically Scots-Irish (lol), but he certainly culturally is, having lived it. In my case, I am American, and from Boston. Hayes is actually a Norman name-before they got awarded land (translate stolen) in Cork after 1066 with Billy the Conqueror. My mother's name was Buchanan and her family were all "Two Boaters". First to Nova Scotia, then to Boston. Then the dreaded religious miscegenation occurred. Lol. Take care sir!

@@francisburke2136 Thank you sir. There were many Protestant heroes in Irish Independence. I think the cultures are more important than the religions in the people. The cultures were determined by geography, food production, the art that evolved on the lands. Religion, politics and conquest was imposed and endured. Until they fled and came here-and thrived. All the best, Sir.
