I have the same issue but found a gas station by my house that is knowledgeable with challenging propane refills. My onboard cylinder lasts for years as I only use the refrigerator and occasionally use the burner when it is raining to make coffee/soup. I found a product that may help with when to refill, it's called Mopeka LP Sensor and you can upload/sync it with your smart phone app. You just stick it on the bottom of your cylinder with the included magnet and the sensor communicates with your phone to let you know how much propane you have left in your tank. GoWesty carries it. You would have to reconfigure it for an Arbitrary/custom tank, since the VW is horizontal and not a standard vertical LP 20-30-40 lb cylinder. It has a multi-tank optional monitor you can mount inside too! I am just going to put it on before a trip just to check the level, then keep it inside my van and not attached as I am afraid it will fall off on a big bump and I dont want to zip tie it on.
