While those all look like great options for somebody who wants to do a resto-mod and keep the engine bay looking fairly stock, why haven't GoWesty looked in to making a serpentine belt kit yet? It seems like a relatively simple way to make maintenance easier on this motor.

I believe the biggest issue is maintaining California emissions compliance. You gotta keep the h20 boxer in the van or it can't be put on the roads! I'm I wrong?

You are correct. The emissions standards keep getting more strict. I have the EG33, but I wonder sometimes will there come a year when it will not pass. Unfortunately, I think that reality will come. Thank you for watching and for the great comment and question.☺

I don't see the 6 cylinder at GoWesty

More modern options are better choices than rebuilt waterboxers. Engine cases are going to be high mileage units. The high cost of a GoWesty rebuilt waterboxer engine is just the begining. A buyer has to update the Vanagon cooling system and the quirky Digifant engine management system. I'd go Subaru or a 1.8 VW inline four. If you live in California, your engine choices are limited to CARB certified units.

I have found the Vanagon cooling system to be pretty good. I live in the deep humid southeast USA & my Westy's ran very cool. However, if you see steam in the back, pull over! Usually tightening a hose clamp fixes it. The Vanagon does have very many hose clamps in the cooling system. More failure points than your average car.

Best source for waterboxers I've found is folks wanting more power who get rid of their working waterboxer engines to install one of the alternative power plants. There is still some concern with these engines having lifter noise due to the horizontal hydraulic lifters collapsing, and a weakness in the rubber water jacket head gaskets. The fuel economy is worse than a 1985 Ford E250 with a 6.9 litre diesel, a much heavier vehicle, and the power much less. On the upside these are not interference fit engines and don't use timing belts that wear out and can cause catastrophic engine damage, but gears. In any case, my engines cost about one fiftieth the GoWesty price. I can only think that being in California, their target demographic is upscale Silicon Valley nouveaux millionaires for whom vanagon ownership represents cachet!

very true. even if they have put 15 years into it, its 9k for 1986 tech basically. i dont think this includes there $3k engine management system either. crazy money. the current "next big thing" is the CR2.0 TDI going for 12k, for the money is no object crowd. there are plenty of swapped vanagons running around the northeast, with owners into the swaps for less than a couple grand. with the abundance of subi 2.2's, 2.5's and inline vw's kicking around, im shocked this even has enough willing buyers to have enough potential for a company to even want to pursue turning a failed 2.1 into a 2.7 stroker or even with its four (for the most part) failed prior attempts. (problems with their first generations 2.3's and so on) craziness. im currently building a tdi for nowhere near this kinda cake lol

Anyone ever think about a Goldwing engine in a Vanagon?
@worldhello12343 жыл бұрын
It is a motorcycle engine with the maintainance intervals of a motorcycle engine.
@kimhorton61093 жыл бұрын
@@worldhello1234 5000 miles oill change, 25k valve adjustment, cam belt lasts 100k or better, integrated transmission has no separate oil change requirement. I don’t see the problem. Hooking it up to a VW transaxle might mean you could have a transmission that could handle a wide range of conditions.
