Vancouver Island marmots sometimes choose to leave their birth colony at ~2 years of age, usually in search of breeding opportunities at a new colony. Even if they decide to stay at their birth colony, they will typically move into a burrow of their own, somewhere that gives them a little space from their parents - and their parents a little space from them! Sometimes it seems to take a little extra work to get these younger marmots going on their way. The marmot on the left is a 2yo male, and apparently he just keeps coming home again. He is receiving a little loving discouragement from one of his parents.
Neat fact: The process of a marmot leaving their birth colony to join a new colony is called dispersal. Most marmots only need to travel a few kilometers to reach another colony...but some marmots have been found to travel up to 30km!
