A Vancouver man has been charged with second-degree murder in a decades-old Ottawa cold case police say they cracked using cutting-edge DNA technology.
Lawrence Diehl, 73, is accused of fatally stabbing 22-year-old Christopher Smith on the Portage Bridge connecting Ottawa and Gatineau in 1996.
Vancouver police, in collaboration with Ottawa police, arrested the former meteorologist and BC Soccer Hall of Fame inductee at his home on Dec. 10.
Ottawa police said homicide investigators returned to the nearly 30-year-old cold case in 2020 when they used advanced DNA testing, including Investigative Genetic Genealogy, to identify a suspect.
Global's Kristen Robinson reports.

I worked at the Supreme Court house and it was very interesting, but also scary at the same time. You wonder if the wife knew or if she didn’t know because he married her after that timeframe they’ll probably have to sell the house to pay the lawyers that’s too bad. It’s a beautiful house.

If I am guessing, and strictly guessing, most likely what happened was that the dead guy and his cousin tried to rob Lawrence or beat him up and he stabbed them and one died. Let's hope my interpretation is correct and he is exonerated.

*I’m just shocked that little ass house cost 3.2 million smh stop it, my house looks a lot better than that and it’s a lot bigger and cost less than half a million*

If that's his $Million$ dollar home in BC, my first home was bigger (2,700 sq ft) on 2 lots in Ontario (30 minutes from Ottawa and Montreal) and I paid ~$80,000. That doesn't make real Realtor cents/sense!

I'm interested to hear the situation of what occurred during the altercation. Two against one in the middle of the night and you have a knife in your pocket might lead to something like this. But not telling anyone for this long is pretty sus.

Like the older neighbour said, You just don’t know. Then you have the comment from the other neighbor, and it doesn’t sound like this guy who’s up for murder was a very nice neighbour to say the least. I guess they’ll be selling that house to pay for lawyers fees. I feel sorry for the guy‘s wife. If he did in fact, do that to Mr. Smith that means that she’s been married to a murder all these years. Poor woman unless she knew about it.

I don't know what's a worse crime, the fact he murdered someone or that a house as hideous as that can have an evaluation of 3.25 million dollars. Like, seriously. Who is paying that much for houses like that..... Lol I wouldn't pay $200k for that. Why in the hell would all these people sell their houses become millionaires then move somewhere dirt cheap and be rich. Lol
