As the individual who had laid those flowers at the site, I wanted to take this opportunity to expand on my comments that I provided on air. As far as life was concerned, Francis David Laporte and I were strangers. However, he was murdered steps from my home. I’m still haunted by what I imagine to be his final moments. I imagine that in one moment he was simply minding his own business, perhaps enjoying the bright morning sunshine, one of the last sunny days before the ensuing grey. And then in another moment his life was unjustly and cruelly taken away. Those very last moments - the fear, the confusion, dying alone on the hard concrete pavement. Life was already difficult for him - and he did not deserve this. That morning I had walked by the scene of the crime and saw the police tent and a tarp which obviously was covering a body. Later that evening on my way home from work, I stopped by and was rather astonished to find the site as though nothing had happened. There were no notes, no flowers, no evidence of the gruesomeness that had taken place. The sanitized site was further reinforced by crowds who were on their way to some sort of show or performance at the theatre. People were smiling and laughing, taking group selfies, and some even walked right over the very spot where Mr. Laporte had drawn his last breaths - all were probably oblivious to the horror that had transpired a short while earlier. I felt that this was wrong, that in a twisted way Mr. Laporte’s life was sanitized from our society. Who was there to give him his voice? Who would speak up for innocent victims of senseless violence? And so I felt compelled - hopefully no longer as a stranger - to do something small, to mark that I wouldn’t forget what happened, to at least give some voice to Mr. Laporte. And like many of my neighbours and fellow citizens, I’m angry and frustrated. We’ve all watched this before. Some of us have even lived it (myself having been randomly attacked on Robson Street last year). And it’s a tiresome refrain: 1) An attack happens 2) Media descends upon the scene 3) Press conferences are given 4) Empty platitudes are uttered 5) Oversimplified crime stats are spouted 6) The victim and the horrific incident soon fade from our collective memory Wash, rinse, repeat. Maddening, isn’t it? And, lost in all the chatter is this one salient point: accountability (or lack thereof). So what should we, as supposedly responsible citizenry, do? 1) Demand accountability for the reopening of Riverview or expansion of similar facilities. 2) Hold violent criminals accountable with tougher approaches from law enforcement and stricter incarceration policies. 3) Hold ourselves accountable by not perpetuating the myth that mental illness equals violence, and by educating ourselves with the overwhelming body of research that shows tenuous links between the two. (In fact, people with actual mental health issues are more likely than others to be the victims of violence.) Why is this distinction important? Because violent criminals should be treated as such - criminals - and those with mental illness who are no harm to anyone should not be further stigmatized. 4) Insist that violent repeat offenders have no place further threatening the very fragile fabric of our society. There is a glimmer of hope that Mr. Laporte’s senseless killing won’t be in vain.

BC NDP announced $1 billion for drug and mental health support a year ago (mainly more beds for those voluntarily seeking help). Policies aren’t working. More involuntary treatment and tough-on-crime policies are needed now. NDP has had 7 years to work on this and the feds have had 9. It has festered and gotten way worse under their socialist policies. If you disagree with me, fine. But put yourself in the shoes of the public and especially those who are innocent victims of random violent crime. We pay insanely high taxes and should be safe to walk the streets without fear of being murdered in broad daylight. Something bold needs to be done to keep the public safe.

Old school police work is better then this safe supply policy that makes the government the drug dealer. How can a problem be stopped if people are not punished for it? Old school way is when people are caught using or selling these highly addictive opoids they are interrogated and offered plea bargains to rat out their dealer and investigators work their way up the chain building a case. Eventually they get figure out who the kingpin is and get them on a racketeering and conspiracy charge.
