This is unbelievable. My wife has family up in Vancouver. A whole gang of us from the States went up to visit them about 15 years ago. Vancouver was the nicest, cleanest, big city I had ever been too. What a tragedy for Canada. Went to lax on the drug policy. Everyone's wasted.

I spent two years of my high school years in Vancouver, met my first crush in Moscrop secondary school, also met my very best friend living in there, but in the end I had to moved to Calgary in 2006 because of family reason. Back then I cried because I didn't want to leave the city. Looking back now, moving to Calgary was a blessing in disguise. My high school best friend also moved out to Saskatoon for job, and when we talk, we are both happy that we left the city we once loved, we had no desire to visit it anymore. Vancouver always have a special place in my heart, watching it turning into a slum hurts.
@Tugela60
@Tugela60 5 ай бұрын
It is not turning into a slum. What is happening is that gentrification is slowly reducing the area homeless people can hang out in, with the result that they get concentrated into a few blocks of the city which has always been skid row.
@timmyfung01
@timmyfung01 5 ай бұрын
@@Tugela60 may be you are right, but the general population of homeless did increase. it is not just the homeless too, the crime rate is terrible, I got my truck window smashed last time I was there just because I left my luggage in the truck for a quick lunch. This never happened to me in Calgary for nearly 20 years. roads are much more narrower than here in Alberta and drivers are much more aggressive. people are less polite and house price is insane. I love Vancouver, but it is definitely not the city is once was.
@Tugela60
@Tugela60 5 ай бұрын
@@timmyfung01 I have been here for thirty five years. It has improved a lot in that time. No one I know has experienced any sort of crime at all, except one lady who had her car keyed once by a crazy person in her neighborhood (not homeless). The homeless/drug user issue is just more apparent in the DTES because encroaching gentification has left these people with fewer and fewer places they can live, with the result that they are being squeezed into a small area.

Nah, that's rubbish. I live in Cambodia, lots of poor people, sleeping in shanties by the roadside or drains, or in their tuk tuks. Or on the streets. Same as USA. You just don't see them as a tourist staying in a hotel coz they're tucked away 8n back streets or out of the tourist areas. At night they make a bed in front of s9me office building. Construction workers live on site with their families.

I am from Vancouver, it's much worse there then Cambodia, and I lived out in the villages and remote places as well as the big cities. You have it wrong.. Shanties are mostly squatters, waiting for the government to issue land certificates, which is how they deal with that, they take the certificates then, and borrow to build a little house, this is standard there. Construction workers live on site, are fed by employer, and save all their money. They are working. You don't see the difference, dude? @@blahblah-qx4uk

While the US is one of the wealthiest nations in the world, income and wealth inequality have been on the rise in recent decades, contributing to an increasing poverty rate. According to the US Census Bureau, the official poverty rate in 2020 was 11.4%, representing approximately 37.2 million people living in poverty. Also went to Army and Navy store sometimes. The Sears store is gone years ago. They had a great sewing notions and fabric store in the area too. Yes, there were many poor people in the area, living in the hotels that have been there a long time, but at least they were housed. Not sure if the VCC is still open in the area anymore. And look at it now, Hastings and Main street. The system has failed majorly. The one and only message is DONT DO DRUGS.

Junkies and those homeless people are not poor. They can earn 1 million dollar and it will still only last for less than a month. More money = more and expensive drug. I get surprised when people hate legal immigrants coming in Canada to earn money by working hard while paying more taxes, but not the govt. or drug dealers who are born and raised in Canada yet help to ruin this country. Everything is too expensive nowadays that hard working citizen can't hope to save enough money to even buy a house unless they commit to around 30 years of mortgage. Being junkie and homeless is easy, as you get instant pleasure, and free place to live and govt. charge normal worker more taxes so they can build you a shelter. Как быстро колесо Сансары сделало оборот, и вот уже бывшие победители и гегемоны всего и вся пожинают плоды своей убогой либеральной идеологии вседозволенности, индивидуализма и разврата. This video is extremely mis-leading. The content show is from East Hastings.or downtown east side. It's about 8 blocks long and 2-3 blocks in each direction, probably constituting less than 5% of Vancouver downtown. It's important to know that any major city has a small district with drug addiction and homelessness problems. It's also important to note that Vancouver is the warmest city in Canada, so people living on the street come to Vancouver to survive winter. Ironically this issue perpetuates because the Canadian govt actively chooses to find wars and genocides abroad rather than using that money for the local community
