My guess: you're a biracial child (possibly in a predominantly white community). So you're already different. In their view, probably easiest for you to just "fit in" best you can by picking one lane and staying in it.

@@noisycomment1990 This is a mistake a lot of people who've never lived as minorities make. They don't realize that their kids will ABSOLUTELY pick up the majority language and culture because that's where they spend most of the day but they'll completely lose their native culture/language if it isn't emphasized every time there's an opportunity. :/

Great to see and hear from your interview. The scenery is fantastic. I think I can identify so much with your dad. Scotland is such a beautiful and peaceful country for growing up in. I know when I was there the weather was always a talking point and whenever we had the occasional sunny and hot day we all flocked to Loch Lomond and Oban from Glasgow. I grew up there, went to university there, worked for Nuclear Power on the West coast building the Inverkip power station. I understand your dad so much and I don’t know why I never got married to a Scottish lady. They are good and have tremendous and love you so much. I’ve done it the other way round. From Ghana I went straight to Scotland and now live in London and listen regularly to your rich Scottish accent from your channel. It does bring back memories and hearing from your dad was so good.

I remember vividly how my older sister's husband will play Osibisa, Jimmy Cliff and Jim Reeves music at at the Police barrack were we lived. The beating of the conga blasting away and everyone singing and gyrating to the music of Osibisa. I remember Sir, I cleaned Every inch, including four wooding legs stand of that Ivory Gramophone (smudge-free with some very smelly brown cleaning liquid stuff) every Sunday before they delicately place a polished vinyl record; The continuous non-stop playing vinyl record after another! My Sunday. LOL. PS: I thought the Ivory on the Gramophone were made of biscuit fingers. Oh dear - good memories! I like your Dad. Old G. He did his best and seeing him still kicking means he did his things straight. About the so called Bei racial children a child is who the father is. Be proud. Stay well, stay safe.

Honestly, this is probably one of the most interesting interviews between daughter and father.. have seen for sometimes. I did know that much about you Vanessa, not I know enough to join your band of die-hard fans! I cant wait to see Mama Vanessa speaking out on how she met Mr Kanbi!!

Great video. You interviewed him like he wasn’t your father - that way we could get his honest opinions or he could share from his own perspective without you constantly influencing his side of the story. It’s a common thing we do with our family members. Shows how you respect him as an elder. And he kept it real. Very wise man by how he answered some of the questions. Whatever he didn’t need to explain he kept it short. Could you share the name of his band or his music?

Her father's generation that travelled out of west Africa were largely not economic migrants. Usually post late 70s and1980s. But from 80s onward, a flood of economic migrants traveled out enmass. I am from Nigeria. I had family friends and cousins who would just go on holiday and come back. Then our currency was stronger than US dollar and at par with UK pound. But the moment the exchange rate skyrocketed, people had more economic reasons to travel. Most that left Nigeria to study in the 70s and before usually had jobs and cars waiting. Life was good then.

This is one of the most interesting stories I've ever heard. To hear how music interest moved your father to progress himself into a new situation in a new land is inspiring; kudos to your dad! Oh, I also find it interesting that your father gave you the same excuse that my parents gave me for not teaching me Ashanti; only difference is I was able to decipher the language on my own.

Well done you". What excuse did parents give (I haven't watched the entire video) - I notice a lot of 2nd gen African heritage children can't speak their parents language (not just limited to Africa though, same with Asians etc. too)

My best quote " A good person is a good person, a good woman is a good woman it does not matter if they are black, blue, yellow or green. I f you meet somebody who are compatible would you... It is matter of personal choice... If you see somebody you like the colors of his skin does not matter "

I had a massive smile on my face the whole way through watching this interview with your dad. Well done Daddy Kanbi. My dad was the same about teaching us the language. However, because he and my mum used to speak it with each other myself and my siblings managed to grasp some of it.
