1. AIM AT CROSSROADS 2. PRESS AUTO RUN 3. RUN TO FRIDGE
@TrevorPhilips7 жыл бұрын
BTW I was pretty active beta, pre-Auction Houses and during Beta 2's Rest System phase, I basically lived at The Crossroads for like 2-3 months lol. And the speculation 'ran out of time' is pretty certain I think. Westfall was Kaplan/Tigole's baby. Duskwood and Elwynn got immense amount of polish. Even the first Forsaken areas did. I don't think they necessarily ran out of time per se because Barrens was pretty much in at the same time as the Forsaken areas -- which did have Human and Dwarf levels of quality detail IMO -- it's just it probably made the most sense that if one area was gonna, it makes sense to make it the open plains one. Which, of course, was always the counter argument -- of course it's barren, it's a Barrens! which is silly of course because the problem with the Barrens was never that it was open plains but even the content detailing within it was lacking -- the most barren plains could be loaded with alive NPCs, little nooks and crannies, story and dungeon arcs as good as Deadmines, etc. So it was never that it was an open plains; it was that it felt like they finished the art and spend 1 week randomly plotting done random quests and NPCs with none of the crafting and caring that many other zones received.

I'm interested to see what wow classic will be like. Will I be abandoning the vanilla servers I already play and what will the financing be like on it. I assume it might be a sub thing. Or maybe since it wouldn't be a progressive and on going game they'd make it one time or maybe even all together free it's not like it's hard to find a unofficial vanilla server. All though I doubt blizzard would do that their a company after all. I'm sure they'd find a way to get everyone to join their vanilla server instead I mean most of us only played the others because the live version had been going down hill for a long time now, sometimes they level it out but I don't see it going up hill anytime soon. At least not in the way a lot of people wish it would. A lot of people loved some of the old mechanics. Like the hunter pets. The talent tree being capable of a hybrid class. Rather then a single thing. Honestly despite the fact it would make you weaker it was the ability to be unique that I always found the most endearing towards the vanilla talent system rather then the live versions. None the less vanilla certainly will be something to keep a eye on. Hell maybe we might get to see two live versions for once lol. Maybe they will redevelop the games in a different way. Unfixing all the stuff they fixed and make a hardcore wow lol is certainly a interesting thought however theirs gonna be someone unhappy no matter what they do. While I grew up playing wow, having being a child when I first started watching my step dad on his computer half the night on vanilla wow, then finally getting my own version of wow. I'll never be able to relive that feeling the first time I got to play wow. I sucked badly lmfao I was always trying to play cacth up with every new expansion I was never able to reach cap level till it got easy the unofficial servers gave me another chance and I did that now blizzard will let me take another crack at it on a official server hell yeah lol let me relive it I'm sure it won't be the same I'll be taller and have more experience and knowledge in relation to the game I got alot better computer to lol it grew with me. It's like me and my computer get to relive our childhoods I can't wait to see how disappointed I'll be... holy shit the very last line of that could have been my entire comment and it would have been the same exact message lmfao

@CarrowMind7 жыл бұрын
Ha! Not even close! Redridge is sandwiched between Elwynn Forest and Burning Steppes, ones a lvl 45-50 zone and the other is a zone containing an Alliance capital city. The easiest way to get there for a Horde is through STV, and they still have to travel through two zones. Compare that to the Barrens, one boat ride and you're there, and there's even a handy neutral town to fall back to incase you get overrun by the defenders.

You know why I love The Barrens? I was questing there in vanilla and one day something happened that made me spit out the water I was drinking all over the computer screen, because it was so shockingly bizarre and silly.. I killed a giraffe. Looted his body and what I saw made me question my entire life. The giraffe dropped clam meat. WHY WOULD A GIRAFFE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE BARRENS KEEP CLAM MEAT IN ITS POCKETS!?
@berserkur197 жыл бұрын
So, I asked Barrens Chat about it, because I thought it was a bit interesting. What happened next? Well, everything went apeshit. Some people didn't believe me and started raging, but those who DID believe me went even crazier. Everybody started to talk about mutant shrimp giraffes that were going to take over The Barrens.. And then the culling of the Barrens Giraffe's started. There were literally raid groups with high level players that started killing the giraffe menace, in order to save the horde from giraffe domination. It was the most insane thing ever and I loved every second of it.

Yeah...I am a new player who recently got into legion (fire mage currently at level 109) and I have to say the process of getting there was really fucking boring. Right on, "with a fresh memory", that's the key I think a lot of the old timers forget when they complain about how things have changed. Even if they could revisit the servers exactly as they were, it still wouldn't be as good, because you can never recapture that feeling of discovering something for the first time. I've always thought that one of the reasons WoW made it so big was it came in just at the tail end of when the very concept of an MMORPG was still magical to most people. It was far enough along to reap the benefits of lessons from earlier games like Everquest, but people were still enchanted by the concept of a multitude of people playing in the same world.

The zone is cut in half but that's not as important as the fact that all of the quests are much easier. Even though Trolls, Goblins, Tauren and Orc's are all funneled there at once now, it doesn't matter because you can blow through the zone, so nobody needs help, and everyones out pretty quickly Leveling also took forever in vanilla, sometimes quests werent enough for you to outlevel a zone and you'd either go to another zone of similar level (there were usually at least 2 once you got past level 20) or you grind mobs. Back in Vanilla there werent even enough quests in the game to hit level 60 and you basically had to grind the last 5 levels... anyway im getting off topic. Also, now alliance isnt as inclined to attack horde settlements and vice versa... you only ever get lone pranksters now. That's about it. I fondly remember getting corpse camped by a gnome mage level 60 while questing from tarren mill.

Dancer of the Boreal Valley I started during the Burning Crusade, and even then playing on a PVE server, I remember the bloody body pit that was The Crossroads. A well designed mini-world that was better than most of the rest of the game combined. When Blizzard did the world update that destroyed the Barrens, they basically cut out the heart of the game (when you see magma coming from Blizzard, it means their creative people are gone). The original Wow game design should never have used obvious small zones. The only region to fight this stupid idea was the Barrens, a place you could actually live in. Ratchet and Crossroads were the capitals of this mini-state - they were nothing like the awful over-sized major cities in the game. A lot of people were moving large distances on foot as well - this gave the region an almost Asheron’s Call like open-world feel to its spacing and movement.

Tanaris and Stranglethorn were beyond awesome too, during BC (when I started playing). Ridiculously high amount of mobs, ridiculously long quests, ridiculously dense concentration of Alliance and Horde players in the same place. It was mayhem all over, everyone was camping everyone and that was a huge part of what made the game great.

Every toon I levelled in Vannilla after the first always levelled in the Barrens, even my undead toons levelled in the Barrens. You could find literally everything there. Every tradeskill was covered, there was frequent world pvp, and chat was always moving when waiting for WSG to pop, once it was added. Even when I played on Nostalrius, I still levelled my toons through the Barrens.

To be honest, I believe that due to gamers standards being so high these days, stuff like old Barrens would be instantly demonized today. The unnecessary challange was what made it so good. Leveling isn't what it was. I myself prefer PvE and just making a character, wondering through these awesome landscapes, meeting weird and wonderful characters and slaying fearsome beasts. Now a days, most players are focused purely on endgame stuff and Blizzard has accommedated for that. It really detracts from the experiance when I venture to take on this legendary beast and see some random orc in armour far too high for his level just one-shot the thing like it was a bloody critter and just move on. I played WoW for a few weeks at WotLK and only REALLY got into at WoD, but even I miss Vanilla :(

Doomhardt high standards or being overly comfort-focused, rather. Like, the most liked games these days are the ones that require not much effort from you, like the narrative-focused ones (Uncharted 4, GoW, TWD, Witcher 3). Sure, there are exceptions like DS series, but it's popular exactly because most other games focus on the player's comfort rather than challenging them.

Barrens Suck is exactly what made the game so great, thats what blizzard hasnt figured out. It built the back bone for future friendships with your fellow horde players. Someone who played allience or started playing after the bulk of the player base had lvl'd to 60 would look back on the barrens in a negative light, but a horde player who started early in the game would probably look back on the barrens and wish they could recreate that experience again. I remember creeping my way around pig people tryin not to get killed by wondering packs and all of a sudden seeing "crossraods is under attack" spammed. Saving HELL YA and bee lining it over to defend my house. I LOVED early barrens its right up theres with early raiding MC and BWL and vanilla AB,WSG and 8 hour AV battles. Show less

I still remember how a fellow guildmate and I worked jobs at the same restaurant on the weekends and on a few occasions we joined AVs on Thursday nights, we'd log out late Thursday/early Friday, go to work, come home, join the same AV, play into the night, go to work, come home and join apparently the same instance through Sunday evening. I don't even care about the medallions or whatever thing they put in to encourage spamming AV victories or losses, the battleground was fun and playing it was itself the reward. Barrens was also fun to go to, even though I was a little more interested in the Forsaken thematically/lorewise, I did enjoy coming over to the rest of the Horde's territory for that zone. Additionally, I eventually got a Chuck Norris Fact Generator mod and whenever I would travel through the zone on a flight path or mount, I would activate it like every 30 seconds to keep Barrens Chat alive.

Early vanilla has strong nostalgia for me. It was as released at just the right time of the year :)being released late 2004, it gave me plenty of time during Christmas break in school to play it. I remember leveling my first character from 1 to 53 in just 5 weeks. However then I deleted my mage because it was a crappy rpg server, and started a warrior. It took me until June to hit level 60. Then I remember raiding all summer. I was on a shysty guild where they would screw over everyone besides the top 8 players though so all I ever got from mc was wrath boots sadly.

I loved the Barrens and Crossroads.. this brings back good memories of my childhood. I always went to Barrens once I was lvl 12 even as undead.. so much to do and even had a dungeon wailing caverns.. that white lion echeyaki I always tamed when lvling hunters.. and the chat was hilarious too. I quit playing wow around the end of burning crusade.. once in a while I would buy a months subscription just to low lvl pvp a little, through wotlk.. was that like over 10 years ago? I've recently been watching vanilla wow videos and now really considering to start playing when the classic wow server gets launched. I think I'd roll a warlock or a hunter again. Those were my two first lvl 60s.. I focused on my hunter and eventually got full giantstalker, for the %15 multi shot increase, with marksman build, the av crossbow (I really wanted the bwl xbow but my guild never got past razorgore).. back when weapons weren't normalized.. and the wolf pet furious howl and the damage trinket, trying to make my multi shot do as much dmg it became an obsession.. I solo farmed the cenarion hold reputation to get the better damage trinket by first farming mobs for those papers.. then going into maraudon and farming the bosses solo for loot to vendor for gold to just buy the papers from the ah.. brings back memories. I got exalted for cenarion hold, and all I had to do was kill one of the four elite bosses for the quest to get the trinket.. I tried for weeks, at that time no one else was in silithus.. I gave up and quit wow. Then grew up and became a miserable adult whose probably dying of some illness.. I want to go back..

I would argue that the old barrens, despite me not being a horde player, was better then the new barrens. Getting people together is important for an MMO, community is one of the support beams of the MMO whole. The Barrens had that in spades. The only thing you see now are people around "rare" spawns...and even that has died down quite a bit.
@Rpground7 жыл бұрын
It's funny because you go to a vanilla server, I was on Nost before it was shutdown, community was vibrant and full of life. People everywhere doing quests, helping each other actually DO the quests because you weren't fucking GOD at level 1. Enemies were hard, hell even a small group had trouble in loch modan at the kobald caves! I made four friend there because we accidentally spent 4 hours there just talking and killing the things. You don't see that anymore in current WoW, you don't see that almost anywhere anymore.

I think you had some of both back then. The need to group up made people nicer and want to group up. But then with places like the Barrens being so vast, often you were the only toon for miles around. Helped you fall into the role of the lone hero saving a village or something.

The atmosphere in the barrens was really good. The music and the vastness of the zone was just great, sometimes you felt so alone and lost wandering around when you played late at night. It felt like a real place, tedious to travel through but so satisfying to explore. I think this zone is what really pulled me into the game a long time ago. But the state of the game at the moment is horrible in my eyes, its so easy and you just follow UI-elements that point towards whatever you need to do. It devolved almost into an idle-clicker type game, it feels meaningless and dull. I never thought I will play again but I can't help to be a bit hyped about the classic realms, going to experience some nostalgia I hope.

I'm with you, as someone who loves leveling alts I don't even bother with low level dungeons. Current content is by far more interesting, and if you feel like experiencing old questing, that's what alts are for. This from a player who got in at late vanilla, with just enough time to get a 60 before tbc. Nowadays I have one of every class on both factions. Vets have seen it all before, we don't need to see it again. If that's your thing, great, do that, but all the alternative leveling methods are there for those of us who don't want the old slow way.

I loved nearly everything about the zone except for that stupid quest, were you had to kill like a hundred of quiboars just to get 3 weapons. But the ambience, the danger and the feeling of wilderness was absolutely mood. If the zone design was only done that way by accident, then it was a lucky shot. I had the best time of my leveling phase in this zone. The openness, the variety of hostiles just developed a very horde - like feeling to me. And in some weird kind of way, the zone Feld pretty cozy. The chat was awesome. Ever questet in the barrens at Friday night? It was so funny. So many jokes. And I once encountered two people discussing life in a very deep way and I joined the conversation and we told storys of our childhood and then got into a group for the caverns. The zone felt like wow was the real world. And there is no alliance zone that can compare to that experience

The thing about "bad zones"... I believe a big part of WHY server communities died was because of the Cata re-design. Yes, gameplay wise, Barrens might not have been the best. Though the difficulties of being there are what spawned the chat that it did. People looking for groups for the THREE dungeons in the zone, help with quests, Crossroads defense, trolling, memery, or just chilling. The same thing applies to Arathi Highlands, Duskwood, Mulgore, and to a lesser extent, Stranglethorn Vale.

Exactly. Barrens, being as big as it was, was a little mini world that you and dozens of strangers, sight unseen, could live in and truly experience. Then when you wanted to, you could group up for the dungeons which had branching paths and took hours to complete. Everything in that zone was a mini representation of Blizz's design philosophy back then: focus on the journey, not the destination.

Hillsbrad Foothills was basically just a death trap for Horde players, at least in the early days. I miss that zone too.

I miss Vanilla WoW for its clunky design. Vanilla WoW is like your first car you actually owned and didn't borrow from your parents: It wasn't fast. It wasn't comfortable to be in or drive. And it sure as hell wasn't going to attract ladies. But you persevered because you knew every part of it, from the last rusty bolt to the dirty footmats with gallons of beer and vomit in them. I had so much fun in the Barrens. Not because of the zone's design, but because of the people I endured them with. Basically every Horde player could relate and that shared suffering created bonds which lasted for quite some time.

It's not really "bad design", it's a different design doctrine. Places like Tarren Mill and the Barrens were hotspots for world PvP because Blizzard wanted it to be, back in the first patches of Vanilla there was no notion of "World PvP" because "World PvP" was PvP, no bgs no arenas no nothing. So we have zones were Alliance and Horde control overlaps, like hillsbrad and barrens. They were the battlegrounds, by design, they were geographycally important. (If you think about it, the first bgs were conceptually placed in similar zones... that ,I feel, is a strong argument for my idea about this). Sure Blizzard might have done something better, like creating a way to direct people to the actual fighting rather than just saying that the barrens is under attack. Believe me when I say that Vanilla wow can bring back those experiences, it's not just the novelty of the game back when it came out that makes you feel nostalgic about it, all of the design choices made it a very engaging game, and that's why we need it back, because it's a game that does not exist anymore. WoW Legion and BfA might share the name, but the experience is so changed that I now feel they are completely different games. We want both of them now.

Addressing why classic is good and needed without trashing modern WoW. +1 from me.

Blizzard being so obsessed with fine tuning and scripting of this game i feel ruined the culture, immersion and general adventure/epicness of it. Vanilla days were less predictable, reckless and they were far more adventurous. Blizz wasn't afraid to do things like Highlord Kruul city massacres or even at the end of TBC with the player spread Plague. Or have crazy ass dungeons. None of which were conventional in their design and parties could spend hours in them. Come TBC and especially WotLK, everything was made like it waslike a cookie cutter or out of a factory assembly line and Blizzard wanted players to get a specific experience and play a certain way because all of the anal competitive/pro players and wannabes started to get a hold of WoW dev's ears and cried for all of it to be so and noobs wanted to experience what the pros did... This all cheapened the memorable world experiences. The only good things WoW produced since were scripted to be what we got and convenience features and new cheap fun things to kill time, merely keep their game alive for old and new players would have been riding on the fence of quitting/playing. They focused to much on the game tuning, not the experience. I thing they could've fixed/tuned it all better and still kept authenticity if it wasn't so much intended on controlling (limiting) the player's experience (just to streamline the game).

Oh my god, the plague spread was one of my favorite memories of the game! So, so fun. I don't think we'll ever see something like that again. People got too butthurt. :l Oh, and I remember spending freaking *years* in Sunken Temple back in the day. When I got that one I knew it'd be at minimum a 2 hour time commitment, lol.

The counter-argument to your final point is this: Is it not better to feel something about the experience, regardless of if it is positive or negative, than to feel nothing about the experience? Because that is the difference between the vanilla Barrens and the post-Cata Barrens. Both zones are just bland and generic and wholly uninteresting now because the old flaws that would otherwise distract you from it are gone. If you have made content that people would rather skip by doing something else then that content is a failure.

That's because Horde would go to Stranglehorn to PVP and some were tired of of the dry barrens. Duskwood is one zone away and filled with noobs and low level players and sparsely guarded. Same reason crossroads was attacked often. Crossroads and Stranglehorn sucked on PVP realms
