I don't know if anyone else saw this, but look at how plain the setting and Alex's clothes are in the video. There is not hint of personality to the room on the side where Alex is located vs the side we see the mother on when she is messing with the flowers. Alex himself is wearing a plain shirt with khakis and dress shoes, all things that a 16 year old would not pick out themselves to wear on their birthday for a celebration so simple. Anything with pattern has to do with the Mother and what she can control, such as the dress, party hat, and other little decorations around the room. Anything that fits outside of the mother's control, such as the baseball card, is ridiculed. Vanilla cake itself is seen as very plain, so the Mother making a "plain" cake for her "plain" son is just another one of her mind games to keep him under her thumb. If he was belittled for 16 years and everything he suggested went unheard because his mother had to be in control, it's no wonder he snapped.

This film is actually pretty real if you think about it. When you hold in your anger, at one point you snap and for around 3-4 seconds you get mentally deranged, meaning you can literally kill someone within those 3 to 4 seconds of snapping. If you've seen the Great Gatsby, there's a scene where Gatsby snaps and for a few seconds, he gets extremely angry and almost kills Tom, before calming back down again.

This story hits close to home. My stepmother is the same kind of woman like the mother here. Only talks about herself saying mean things to everybody around without even realising what she is doing. She always had to be the main character, gets loud at any arguments and even more mean and abusive. My Dad starts drinking becouse of that. Guess what? She leaved him becouse he was drinking. On my side, i developed a personalty disorder from that time 🥳 as well as her own son btw. So i am very beside the Boy and his feelings. He doesn't kill her for the cake, he kill her for sixteen years, his whole life, of harrasment and vocal abuse.

This is brilliant. In modern society this honestly terrifies me. Also, love the filming angles like the shovel dragging over the axe/tool, really nice touch. And the garage light swinging. Really great touches that totally build the anticipation and uneasiness of the situation. I do think its really interesting that everyone is so understanding, to the point of justification, for his murder. Interesting that society has come to a place where people recognize theres always a back story, and try to understand others. This is so good! He has been angered by his mom for so long, he must've built up an immense hatred for her. When he finally breaks and murders her, and discovers that his mother murdered his father, he realizes that he is the same as his mother: a killer. Now, he must either hate his mother and himself, or not hate himself, and in turn, not hate his mother. He must identify with her. Another thing is that he also must feel that his father was hatable, too, since he killed his mother out of hatred, and his mother killed his father out of hatred, so now the character understands how his mother must've felt about his father.
